In April I received a priceless package. In it were two pairs of eyeglasses which have improved my vision considerably. I have been wearing one pair of glasses all of the time. The other is strictly for working in front of the computer. All was well until I took a fall and since then I have been preoccupied with my vision again, as well as other concussion symptoms.

I've been doing some research on eyesight and vision and I have been doing some eye exercises that I would like to share with readers. You will find them in my latest post Tips and exercises for improving eyesight thistimethisspace.com/2008/10/08/tips-and-exercises-for-improving-eyesight/

And I also ran into some tests and puzzles to see how good your eyesight really is.

Can you see clearly? Try your eye at these puzzles and quizzes.

when I immigrated I had to do an eye test and apparently I have 20/20 vision little did they know I entirely guessed the last 3 rows something to be said for angels. What I would like to know is how effective are those cheap eye glasses the pharmacy sells?

      @robinj
I don't know how effective the over the counter eyeglasses are. As they only magnify I assume they may be useful to middle aged people as we all tend to require magnification after the age of 35 years or so. However, I think anyone experiencing trouble seeing really ought to be tested by a professional and get the correct prescription.

tt, if you planned on living until the age of 120 wouldn't middle age begin around 60? Whatcha doing to yourself, falling and all that. Be careful.

I fail miserably on those color maze-thingies, but I scored 60% on the quiz.

I'm near-sighted, and have been since sixth grade (when I had to walk up to the chalkboard to see what it said), but I didn't complain about my sight problems until the following grade, when I got glasses.
    1. timethief
I got all the answers correct on the test but when it came to the colour quizzes I did miserably and eventually I just gave up on both of them.
    2. Friday13
On the first color quiz, I initially went from top to bottom and made diagonal moves (following the color order, of course). Then I read all of the instructions, tried to do it correctly and quickly gave up. Didn't even bother with the other one.

      My poor, poor sight.

    What happened to 2?

I have never heard of eye exercises, so I don't do them. I actually have perfect vision. Everyone always says 20/20 is perfect, but mine is like 20/10. I've often been told I have such good vision because I am almost completely deaf and they say it is my brains way of overcompensating for the hearing disability.

Good spotting. That was a typo. There are only 2 questions.

I finally figured out why my eyesight is bad in some situations, yet so goo din others.

As a trained artist,, I have trained my eye to see the tiniest minute details or changes in color, value, hue or shadow. My eyes are now so sensitive that reading harsh contrasts such as black on white print causes my eyes to go blurry, and creates headaches.

I have the opposite problems. I have only one black background blog that I read now and it's yours. I capture the entire text of every post and put it into a text editor and change the background colour and font colour so I can read it.

I did the healthy eyes one quiz - I did very badly I tend not to do any of the kaleidescope type stuff because it hurts my eyes.

But I feel honored that you read my blog!

If you subscribe to RSS doesn't it give you black text on a cream background? I thought it did, if it doesn't I'll have to see if I can do something that will change that.

DUH ... Why I didn't think of that I don't know. I have now subscribed through BlogLines.

I'm afraid to go. I'm blind as a bat. Ok, so, not that blind. That's why my avatar on PP wears glasses.

Well, why not give the exercises a try? I'd really like it if a lot of us all decided to try them and then shared our feedback.

Very interesting. Sorry to hear about your fall and hope all is well with that.

My eyesight has been deteriorating. I've noticed that when I read literature for extended periods of time, I have trouble focusing afterwards when I look up.

I'm also much more sensitive to bright light, and have recently begun having trouble reading dimly lit and/or fading road signs.

I may have to look into those eye excercises.

Edit: trouble is, I do pass the eye doctor's tests with flying colors, but I know it's (my eyesight) not what it used to be. I had "eagle eyes" as a youth.

I truly think the eye exercises I have been doing for over a year now are helpful. I will also be doing a second post on the eye exercises we yoga practitioners do too.

I just had an eye test done last week. I have worn glasses since I was 14, but lately have started using the type of contact lenses that you don't have to take out of your eye for a month. I LOVE them. The best part is to wake up in the morning and not reach for the glasses as the first thing to do. You can just look outside and see what the weather is like. Right now I see perfectly. Take my contacts out and I can't see the length of my arm clearly.

Those are pretty cool color tests. I just ran across this one a couple of days ago - www.xrite.com/custom_page.aspx?PageID=77 - you're supposed to move the color tiles so their in order.

I only got 5 out of the 10 questions right on the quiz.

I'm often immediately wary of eye exercises because I occasionally run into people who think you shouldn't wear glasses at all, no matter what your prescription, and should only do eye exercises, and then some of them then apply that to kids who need glasses, and well, then I get all stabby. But the exercises you list make a lot of sense, especially for maintaining eye health as you age - as you get older, your eyes stop being able to focus from near to far as well and it seems like those would be good exercises for helping with that. I try to do the changing focus routine, especially when I'm in front of a computer all the time. I'll definitely try some of the other tips for keeping eyes from getting dry since that's a huge problem for me.

I did awful at the colour quizzes. I was so confused and annoyed that I quit before I finished. That sucks because I'm a painter (Sumei).

I did far better on the colour test you gave the link to though. Now I know specifically where which colours and which juncture of hue changes in the range I have trouble with. Thanks for posting it.

My computer monitor was too high. I lowered it to slightly below eye level to see if that would help with the "dry eye" problem. I've got into "active eyes" thing now. I didn't realize before how important it was to blink and to keep them moving all the time. When I'm sitting at the keyboard I'm almost always tracing follow around the edges of objects now, while blinking. I do the hard and soft focus thing frequently now too.

I swear I rarely ever relaxed my eyes, blinked or moved them around much at all before. I guess I relied on moving my head instead so it's no wonder that the muscles at the base of my skull, in my neck and shoulders were so tense.

At first I had to set an alarm to remember to do the exercises but it didn't take long to form a habit. Now it's becoming more automatic every day and my eyes actually "feel" better and my neck feels better too.

    (1) Do you do eye exercises?

    No

    (2) If not, did my post motivate you to give them a try?

Yes, and I failed terribly 40% on the quiz an I'm till a dizzle from the others, I don't even know how I managed to get through responding to the discussion.
    1. timethief
      @sylvia,
The test was not easy and the colour quizzes were mind boggling.
They actually made my eyes hurt.
  10. loverofjazz
i took the quiz and got 5 right. i feel bad about THAT but who knew that it was ok to read and in low light and sit right in front of the television? mom was wrong after all!
    1. timethief
Don't feel bad. The test questions were hard to answer.
  11. SweetViolet
I got 90% on the quiz (missed the first one). I didn't find the colour tests disturbing, just annoying...my patience ran out very quickly on them. What were they supposed to determine and why?

(PS the round one was easy to cheat on and once I figured that out, I quit)
    1. timethief
Disco Lights and Kaleidomaze are mazes that test your colour perception.

I probably need reading glasses, or at least a new prescription, but I've been putting off the expense. Yoga eye exercises feel good, though I'd never associated that with an improvement in vision.
