"SCE to Aux." [Signal Condition Equipment to auxiliary] By John Aaron during the rainy-day launch of Apollo 12, November 14, 1969 when the massive Saturn V rocket carrying Pete Conrad, Richard Gordon, and Alan Bean was hit by lightening twice.

Inside the command module, they lost data, warning lights began flashing, and their screens were displaying gibberish.

On the ground the Mission Operations Control Room (MOCR), also lost data on their screens.

A mission abort started forming in the minds of those in mission control. Then flight controller John Aaron remembers a situation he saw only briefly more than a year earlier during a simulation. Aaron says, "SCE to Aux."

This command was so obscure that neither the flight director, Capcom, or Pete Conrad knew what it meant — in fact they didn't even know what Aaron was saying.

Meanwhile the Saturn V is flying blind. Aaron repeats "SCE to Aux." Fortunately, Alan Bean sitting in the back behind Pete Conrad knows where that little-known switch is, he turns it to Aux and all the screens come back to normal.

Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.
