This really got me upset over the injustice of all of it.

A teen suffered a racial beating because he dated a girl who is not the same skin color as he is and there is little media attention over it.

Please read and comment on here and on my blog, because this topic is so important.

But please share your thoughts on this. When will racial problems end in this country of ours?

I'm not going to get into the disparity in coverage issue, because that's very complex and opens up all kinds of cans of worms. I'd rather focus on the substance of the story. There is a large segment of America still out there (of all races -- white, black, latino, asian, etc.) who disapproves of relationships between races. I never understand that. To me, it is pure ignorance. We are all human beings, all inhabit the same planet, but yet there somehow some important difference between us because we happen to look differently or come from different backgrounds? I just never understand the complete ignorance that pervades such viewpoints. But anyway...

Sadly, you hit the nail on the head.

It is a complex issue and certainly one that needs to be addressed.

"A teen suffered a racial beating because he dated a girl who is not the same skin color as he is and there is little media attention over it."

Are you lamenting the lack of media attention to a beating? Lots of beatings take place every day. The media can't cover every single one.

Or are you lamenting the lack of media attention to a racially-motivated beating? You're saying that a racially-motivated beating is something to be especially covered?

Are you suggesting that a racial beating deserves media coverage more than a gay beating, or a wife beating, or a gang beating, or a robbery beating?

Again, there are lots of beatings, for all kinds of reasons. The media can't cover them all. And I don't see why a difference in what motivated the beating should drive media coverage (unless the motivation is something unique or new).
    1. Timesobserver
I'm just saying that the media has a track record of covering a lot of racial beatings and it's interesting that this particular one isn't getting any major media coverage like others in the past.

To those that still think this way....I'm black and white and love all people....there is only one person you'll have to answer to in the long run.....you had better change your thinking before you meet him!

PussDaddy, thanks for commenting on my blog but I'm a little confused.

I didn't blame President Obama for anything.

They will never end because our citizens can't compromise or learn from other cultures, one look at any of the race threads on here are prime examples. IMO, this doesn't deserve any more coverage than any other beating.

"They will never end because our citizens can't compromise or learn from other cultures"

What culture could our citizens learn racial harmony from?
    2. ArsenicCookies
all cultures. Our nation is pretty much divided on this topic, every person would have to step out of their comfort zone and be open to learning about/understanding others. This will never happen though, too much bickering on who did who the worst

I think the only answer is by changing yourself. Everyone needs to just focus on changing themselves. Compassion, understanding, and open mindedness.

"all cultures. Our nation is pretty much divided on this topic"

You're saying that all cultures outside the US live in racial harmony?
    5. ArsenicCookies
oh sure that's exactly what I'm saying, that along with all of the unicorns and such hanging out over there too. Seriously? The question appeared country specific "THIS country of ours", hence the country specific answer.

Sadly, EndlesslySheSaid, other cultures do have their own racial problems. I can think of England, Africa, Italy and Japan just off the top of my head.

It's like this: If we were always the same color, let's say green, were unisex and we all worshiped a head of lettuce, we would still find ways of screwing each other.

If it's not race, it's religion, if it's not religion, it's sex, if it's not sex, it's sports teams.

There are a multitude of racial injustices that go on without media coverage. We could all get riled up over this and other issues, but honestly, what is the point?

The greatest injustice in America right now has nothing to do with the line of race and more to do with the lines of poverty. THAT is a cause to bring light to.

It does need to have media attention, because it needs to be a teachable moment. i also wonder if the attackers are being charged with a hate-crime.

This is of course assuming that it was actually racially motivated.

In my column, I have a link to the news story about this. Sadly, the kid was beaten so badly that he can't remember the attack.

But both he and his girlfriend have said that there have been a group of guys who have yelled at them and even shot paintballs at the girl. And let me tell you, those things can hurt.
    2. Agit8r
It is certaintly a tragic incident, and the group that has harrassed them are certaintly racists, but this is likely not being reported because there is a lack of evidence presently. Perhaps witnesses will come forward either to confirm what is suspected, or otherwise. Perhaps his memory will return. If it does turn out that it is the same group as had harrassed the couple, then yes it IS a hate crime.
    3. Timesobserver
It's not so much as because there is a lack of evidence, Agit8r. As a journalist, I can tell you that the media should report everything there is to a story, even if there isn't a lot.

Right now, there is a lot to be reported on. But sadly, it's not getting the attention it deserves.

This happened in my hometown and I didn't here anything about it. I really don't pay to much attention to local news though. I don't live in the dark either and if it was a major story I would of heard something about it. It's a sad story. Buffalo is a very culturally diverse city. Everyone seems to get along fine. I'm surprised to hear this.
    1. Timesobserver
Sadly, B0ll0cks, racists and their victims come in all colors.

Although I don't want to think too badly of Buffalo. It's not fair to blame a whole group of people because of what a few bad eggs did.

I am glad to hear that the local media is covering it but I'm not surprised that the national media isn't.

When there's nothing in it for Sharpton and/or Jackson they don't show up.
    1. lotusb
Sharpton and Jackson are not the only black activists or spokespeople. I head about this on a black radio station this morning...it's not as quiet as people are making it out to be.
    2. Timesobserver
That's just it, Lotusb, it is pretty quiet. There is no 24/7 media coverage because of this and I think it's because that the teenager is white and a group of black men attacked him simply because he was dating a black girl.

If the colors were reversed, I can't help but think that the media would be on top of this.

Even the Rev. Darius Pridgen, who is helping Brian Milligan Jr., said that if the boy's color was black and his attackers were white, that there would be protest marches.
    1. Timesobserver
Sadly, Haicamon, your blog links and the picture of the girl will probably be removed by someone from the community.

While it's nice that you want to list your blog links, which I don't have a problem with myself, you really should take part of the discussions as well. I don't mean just mine but others.

      But welcome and nice blogs.
