Basically, just look at the blog of the person who posted above you and give them a rating in these categories:

Visual Appeal: (includes any graphics on the blog and overall how easy it is on the eyes)
Layout: (How easy is it to get around?)
Content: (Is it an engaging read?
OVERALL: (just put what you think their blog is overall with a rating/10)

A sentence or a few words is fine for each category. Include a #/10 rating and perhaps something they can improve.

I've seen this at a HUGE number of forums (except with "rate the member above you" or something, and it tends to work quite well.) If two people post at the same time and one gets skipped, please go back and review the skipped person!

Don't be lazy! Follow the guidelines and lets turn this thread into something more productive than "LETS XCHANGE DIGGS" or "COMMENT PLEASE"

Real feedback, people!

    Nice idea moneymoose!

    Ok let's go :

    Visual Appeal: 5
The standard WP layout. Looks standard. What else to say ?

    Layout: 6
WP did a great job doing a standard layout, and the most of the ppl got used to it. No problems here.

    Content: 8
Interesting read mostly + modified graphic illustrations by the author of the blog (liked that)

    OVERALL: 6.5
Lack of effort on designing / modifying the theme compensated by posts which got potential and nice illustrations. I'd strongly suggest changing the visual look and feel of the blog to gain more readers.

I decided to be direct and straight in order to help you, and expect the same on the review of my blog:

Thanks for being the first person to review!

I really, really have been meaning to change my theme but I just can't find one that I think is good enough. I'm really too picky.

      ANYWAY:

      Visual Appeal: 9
Awesome header! I love how everything blends in very well and you have the "?" and the checkmark to show whether a certain puzzle is solved or not. It looks like you took a lot of time and effort to make it. I've seen better, though, which prevented you from getting a ten.

      Layout: 7
For the purposes of the site, I can see why you didn't put the categories up higher but I didn't like scrolling down to view them. It could probably go above the quote and the poll. That was my main concern.

      Content: 9
I love interesting trivia and this site had some. Although a few questions were pretty easy (the recent one with the bird), most were quite challenging and would probably require research to solve. The leaderboard is very good for attracting constant readers. Great idea for a blog!

      OVERALL: 8.5
Great layout + great content = great blog. The only thing that really bugged me was that I couldn't see the categories soon enough. Nice!

    2. djumbox
I agree with you that the categories should be higher and easier to find on the blog. Thanks for the tip and for your review. K, who's next ?
    3. BlogBadly
Seriously guys! I thought this was a good idea. Just try it out.
  2. Mooo1
Hmmmm... I'm a little confused now. You guys both already reviewed each other, so what now? Well, I guess Moneymoose you'll get a second review since you posted last

Visual Appeal: Hmmm... I think a 7 out of 10, its a standard layout but you also use pictures which works well with the articles. I can't really say anything else because visually my blog is pretty bland.

Layout: Hmm... I guess a 7 as well, I dunno really how you could make it better. Everything is pretty easy to find.

Content: 8, definitely, I found the articles to be pretty interesting and fun to read.

Overall: 7.5? I agree with Djumbox, you could do with making it for visually appealing, maybe make the background a teal or light blue. Some nice, calming color. Other than that, I liked the articles so keep doing what you're doing

I reviewed you Moo even though you didn't post you site

Content: 8.5 or 9.5 if the visitor actually know gary as its cute and personal site

Latout: 7.6 Nice clean layout, like the un-title don't like the green

Overall: 8.1 or 9.1 if you know gary personally which i don't

    Visual appeal: 9.5
Very cool, bold, stylish and professional looking header. Colours are great. Very easy on the eye. Great balance of text & pics in posts.

    Layout: 9.5
All the nav buttons are above the fold. Post footers have 'filed under' labels you can clisk. Navigation is done using a very slick & discreet javascript system. Basic details are shown in tab's near the top of the page. Going from one menu to another, you have to wait for one menu to roll down and another to roll up - could be a bit faster?

    Content: 7.5
Style of writing is good. Its not really my kind of thing, so others may well give this a higher rating. Title's don't always tell you what the article's going to be about - I'd probably skip past a lot of them normally but since I'm doing a review I checked them out and some where interesting / useful. Posting frequency is pretty eratic.

    Overall: 9
Great site. Its fairly young but I could see it picking up a good following.

Well, I hate to be critical, but Visual Appeal is 0, Layout is 0, Content is 0 and Overall is 0. Blogger reported it had been removed, so that skewed the results!

I just confirmed, mine is still up and running. Have fun!

Visual Appeal about a 5 (your blog could use some pictures)

Thanks for the comments. I don't mind constructive criticism.

Most of my blog entries don't really lend themselves to pictures (exception to the rule: radioflyer1980.wordpress.com/2008/10/13/the-spooky-hotel-deal/), but I'll keep it in mind going forward.
  7. Hangingonahyphen
Despite the fact that visiting this blog pricked my pride and filled me with insecurity, and made my own blog look pathetic in comparison to its clean, attractive layout, and not to mention it has greater variety in terms of content, in spite my feeling sorry for myself for looking at this blog up close, and putting myself on the spot to make an honest assessment, in spite of the envy i feel gnawing at me right now, and bluntly, even if I ALMOST hate this blog for being perfect, I JUST HAVE TO BE OBJECTIVE.

    ProjectSavior is worth a 10!

Nice layout, good pictures but If I was you I would make them a bit smaller, or maybe I wouldn't choose something so colorful. Promotion your blog is a huge story and you could find a design that attracts readers of your subject

I get Harvey's ---- Be back with my review
  11. wagerwitch
I'm a hard core reviewer - so PLEASE Harvey don't take this personally. (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE)

Visual Appeal: 5 - Sorry Harvey man - but you need to spice up your layout, it's bland. So bland that I was like ok - there's not going to be anything good here (wrong of course, but you know --- they say don't judge a book by it's cover, yet - we all do... no matter how hard we try not to.)

Your font face is easily readable - and I like that you changed the colors in some posts.

The side bar is not bad - but it ends way too soon and leaves a big gap over on the right...

I wish you had a better template - one that would spice up the outer shell of your blog.

I could find some really nifty blogspot templates for you - if you don't mind, I took the liberty to read your blog - and then translate that to what I thought would look good on yours... Here are a couple of ones that "I FEEL" would look so good for your content:

    www.falconhive.com/2009/03/coffee-desk.html
Because your thoughts are like a cup of coffee -- I almost feel this one would work.

    www.falconhive.com/2008/12/blogger-template-color-paper.html
This one feels open enough and calm and also natural...

    www.falconhive.com/2008/12/blogger-template-japan-style.html
This one gives a possible hope because your content is philosophical that this might be the perfect calm Zen Match... if that makes sense.

    www.falconhive.com/2008/10/blogger-template-green-light.html
very plain but nicely engineered to feel light, airy and still artsy.

    www.falconhive.com/2008/10/blogger-template-notepad-chaos.html
I liked this one because it represents chaos - but I don't know if you'd find it too girly.

    www.falconhive.com/2008/10/red-blogger-template-collection.html
I like the top two red ones - and think they would work well.

OK - that's just my own personal opinion on your visual...

You don't have a bunch of Google adsense stuff everywhere so that is a bonus.

Your slide show is way down at the bottom - I wouldn't have noticed it at all...

Layout: Super easy to get around - but addressed the layout issue above.

Content: Excellent content. Very good philosophical discussions ongoing - interesting stories - and insightful personal posts. It was VERY enjoyable to read all through the blog and get a sense of who and what floats harvey's boat --- Although.... I MUST ADMIT - I did NOT understand the ABOUT ME SECTION at all. Am I reading Harvey's posts? Or am I reading the posts he has translated for someone else and this is not actually Harvey's writings? A bit confusing.

OVERALL: ON a scale of 1 - 10 - this blog is currently a 6. The content is very good - a little confusing - and definetely the reader needs to put themselves in the ZEN philosophy mood. But it is well written and very in depth. But the lack of color - the lack of a nice layout makes this like a dry read. I'd like to see more spice and more interaction with the reader. I'd like to see MORE stories like about the rector coming for dinner - and then the philosophical stuff or thoughts after the dinner - that particular post was very good.

Anyhow Harvey - I'm sorry - I am really very blunt when it comes to reading blogs and reviewing them.

FOR YOUR CONTENT NICHE - Your Blog deserves a 7 - but you can spice it up - and you're really a very good writer!

WHOEVER gets MY BLOG -- It's a GAMBLING blog --- and it's a NICHE MARKETING BLOG - please pass my blog by if you are not capable of reviewing it because of personal objections to gambling - or because your jurisdiction does not allow gambling - or if it breaks any laws for you.

Oh gosh - I killed this thread --- it's an excellent idea. SORRY... Sometimes I'm a bit intense. LOL!
  13. harveyavatar
    WW,
Oh yes, I know the visual aspect can be much improved, will do so with time. Thanks for your link suggestions, will check them out. Actually, the content is more or less the inverse of zen haha, or more precisely it is a different source (it is a philosophy of being vs philosophy of spirit). The blog content is essentially musings I have translated for a friend (RIP), and the more philosophical stuff comes out dry, even though he was a "poet", but the neuron glides sky high... lol Thanks!

Ooooh. Wagerwitch you should review my blog. I could use an awesome criticism like that. It would prolly help a lot.
    1. cookingasshole
      www.mrcheeseburger.com/

      Mr. Cheeseburger,

Visual Appeal: Nice and simple but maybe a little too simple. Try jazzing it up with a little color or somthing. It may be your intention to go black and white and if so just add more contrast. Also although the header font is really cool, it makes it very hard to read. Put your subscribe to this section at the top. Call it somehting cool like "Eat Me" rather than 'subscribe.' Put a short blurb about you in the sidebar, like "I'm sort of like a superhero in a sense. Helping the world under an alias, wearing underwear over my pants, all of the basic superhero stuff" as you so aptly wrote. Add bacon.

      Layout: See above

Content: Don't ever change. Your content needs no improvement but you may want to step up the frequency of posts. I am sure you have the capability and material to do it.

      Rating:
      6.5/10 visual appeal / layout
      9/10 content
  18. samureyed
    Cookingasshole

Visual Appeal: Generic yet easy to read and navigate. Nothing visually stands out on your blog, but it does not work against the content either. I give it a 5.

Layout: You might benefit from a wider width. Other than that, see above.

Content. Genius. I laughed my freaking ass off. Not only was it helpful but also hilarious. The use of, what look like original snapshots, help give the feel that your content is all genuine. Honestly, I give it a 10 and have added it as my first "favorited blogs".

Overall. Don't worry about the design, just keep writing the way you do and it doesn't matter.

if someone actually rates mine, do boardsanddecks. thanks!

Thanks man. Yeah I agree my visual appeal sucks hard. I just don't really know what the hell I am doing when it comes to that crap.

(thanks harvey - but it's very difficult to get folks to rate gambling/casino promotion blogs. LOL!)

    2. qelqoth
      For wagerwitch:

      Visual Appeal: Fairly presentable. (6)
Layout: Clean, easy to navigate. (7)
Content: I hate affiliate splogs. (0)

      Overall: Do not want. (0)
  21. Andrebeccawrites
I'll go take a look and try (my first) rate of WagerWitch, be back in a bit.....
  22. Andrebeccawrites
    For Wagerwitch
Visual Appeal: 8 The color scheme is good and nothing jumps out as blaring 'wrong' or a 'turn off' The font is easy to read and good all around, with this exception: The top of each post that says, "First time to Wagerwitch" and the underneath content. I'm on a laptop, so I don't know how it looks for others, but it's teenie tiny, get out a microscope small. So I would definitely fix the font size or structure of that. The affiliate sites are well placed and easy for visitors to find.

Layout: 6 It seemed to me there are a lot of category links that I clicked and nothing happened. I understand some of those spaces are for sale per say, but as a first time visitor, like I was, we click a lot to figure things out. There's also a lot of links that took me away from your site and I'm not sure if that's a good thing in the marketing arena, unless you have an embedded code in there so the other sites know where the traffic is coming from. (I have my marketing hat on right now) Now, if I stay away from the categories for the most part on top, I navigated your site just fine and you get an A+ for that.

Content:9 I think for the visitors to your site the content is perfect. My only suggestion would be to include which countries the casinos accept or don't. That way people aren't unnecessarily downloading casino's that won't let them register. I liked that you added a special touch with the cartoons and additional commentary so the sites feels like a blog, with the bonus of online casino freebies and promotions. The personal touch is what someone will bond with. That will keep people coming back~

OVERALL: I'd give your site a 8/10 Well done
    1. wagerwitch
Thank you so very much for your review - it means a lot to me.

    For AndreBeccaWrites

Visual: 7-8. I like it because it is very simple, but a pop of color might be nice. I also would like to see more photos.

Layout: 7-8. Simple, easy to navigate. Could you link the header to home? It would make it easier after people leave comments to go back. It took me a moment to find your home link.

Content: 10! I think it's funny and endearing.

Overall: 8/10. I would definitely come back to read this blog because the content fits my personal taste.
  24. SWSamurai
    TinaTina....

Like your site. I have never been good at placing numeric scales to these things, but your site, what I read, is fun. Keep it up and start experiementing a little with the layout.

    Keep up the good work.

I am having mine redone in a couple weeks with the help of a friend.
  25. Andrebeccawrites
Tina, Thank you for your feedback! I changed my header so that it links now, and will work on some extra pictures and even a splash of color.
Again, much appreciated, all your comments!

    @Andrabeccawrites

Visual Appeal 8.5: I love how you kept it very simple and minimalistic. The fact that I have a 22" monitor and can shrink the window and have the same website appeal is awesome. You don't have a lot of flashy ads or colors to distract from the content.

Layout 10: It is very easy to get around your site.

Content 9: I can see that this a personal blog to share your feelings with maybe distant relatives, close friends, or just to get thoughts out of your mind. With that in mind, I think people have a lot to learn not only about you, but what insight you bring to table.

Overall 9: This is a great personal blog, you mix your personal feelings/events in a way that you can be insightful. The layout of the blog is very simple, it doesn't distract from the content. I really do like your site and believe people have a lot to learn from it.

Visual- 5 I think the header could be more exciting; it simply doesn’t catch your eye.

Layout- 8 very easy to get around

Content- 3 I read most of the post and left confused

Overall- 5 The blog isn’t for me the way its written, but this is probably due to my lack of education. Apparently other people can relate to it due to the comments being left.
  28. magdis
Think I'm rating the right one.. DukeSoccer

Visual Appeal: Great pictures! Good use of pictures and links
Layout: Yup, straightforward - I like that you've got 3 columns versus 2 (don't know how to do that myself)
Content: I like the variety of posting - lots of different things going on here
    OVERALL: 7 or 8
  29. harveyavatar
    @KC,

I've already been rated twice, Doh!

As for the content, it does take some time before you can grasp first philosophy, which is the summit of all philosophical quest
  30. EssentialBastard
    Rated: HarveyAvatar

Visual Appeal: The blog maintains a minimalistic look. While this makes navigation amazingly easy (not to mention load time very fast), something needs to catch my eye to keep me scanning for content. Unfortunately, that "something" is non-existent. Perhaps a less generic title header would help.

Layout: Clean and uncluttered; easy to navigate. That said, I'm not a huge fan of blogs that consistently alter the text color from post to post. This detracts from the site's singular look.

Content: Philosophy is the theme. Posts are well written and elicit comments, which usually means that the author has engaged his readers.

Overall: As content is subjective and based on taste, I won't comment on that facet. Visually, the blog is too minimalistic, almost drab. The layout, however, is friendly, easy, and clean.
  31. benmaxime
    great idea!
    essential bastard,
    I love your logo!
    And the creativity is great
Just the sidebar has a bit too much, I would try to cut down on some of the pointless things...
