I will be visiting Europe next spring. Please tell me where you have been in Europe and what country you think I should holiday in. If you like, also share some of your impressions of each country. Ireland is the only country in Europe I have visited.

Calais, I don't normally promote my blog in the General Discussion area but I wrote a four part series on Paris here:

Parts 1-3 are here and part 4 can be found in June. You might find it interesting

Denmark... is a nice b'ful and peaceful place and people are really nice and friendly.
Italy also has many places worth visiting.
    1. calais50
Italy is near the top of my list so far. Denmark-I'm sure it's beautiful, but I hate cold weather.
    2. earthwire
yes Italy has many places that one should visit in Europe.
  3. jaffermaniar
I've been to Turkey, Italy, England and Wales.

I personally liked Istanbul because it is so rich in history - the museums, palaces and other landmarks around the city were all fascinating to me.
    1. calais50
I don't usually think of Turkey as being European, but it is, isn't it? Near Greece I think.
    2. jaffermaniar
I know it's in Asia and I agree. Only a small portion of it is in Europe and borders Greece and Bulgaria.
But then I'm a History buff and I am still fascinated by histories of the Roman and the Ottoman Empires.

In Italy I only visited Milan - very charming and yet modern city. I was only there for a day. I don't really know about holydaying.

I enjoyed the long drives in the countryside in Wales and then stopping for a snack at some odd place - simply beautiful !

I've been to many European countries, but as far as holidays go, I don't know many. One good one that I like is what we celebrate in Russia (and some other european countries) is March 8th - woman's day.
    1. calais50
      by holiday, I mean vacation.
    2. ModelElaine
for a vacation I'd chose France, and not the city but the country side
    3. calais50
without doing much research yet, my top 3 choices so far are

      Spain
      France
      Italy

and I'm sure I would like the countryside better as well since I don't like big cities.
    1. calais50
thanks! I will check them out when i get a minute
    2. crpitt

Beautiful place to stay. My aunt went to Italy and rented an actual count's residence with vineyards and everything. It was fabulous.

my house!!!!! The Netherlands, close to Amsterdam!! and it is so cheap to travel from here to anywhere in Europe!
    1. calais50
The Netherlands is a country I know very little about, basically

      flowers
      windmills
      wooden shoes
      the repuation of Amsterdam

That is the extent of my knowledge. Are you originally from NL, b/c your English is perfect.
    2. Shy
I would not say it is perfect, I actually carry the citizenship of Australia, NL is am amazing country and the things you know about The Netherlands is all the media's fault! There is more to The Netherlands then sex, drugs, tulips, windmills and wooden shoes, We have culture and history and Technology, world leaders in "water management **chuckles** and we have Smit international and man made land, my father always said "invest in land as they do not make it anymore, wrong daddy we have The Netherlands lol.
If you make it over here I have a spare room and I am willing to be a tour guide.
    3. calais50
Thanks for the offer. I appreciate it. What is man made land?
    4. Shy
Windmills were used to pump away water from between dikes (lets hope I spelt the right one It was an initiative from Cornelis Lely over time it exposed land and that is what we call here "man made land" that land is now a province in the Netherlands called Flevoland the capital city from Flevoland is named after Cornelis Lely it is called Lelystad (stad is dutch for city)
Now you can add to your knowledge of The Netherlands
    5. calais50
      Thanks! Very interesting.

I'd like to recommend national poke fun at Belgian's day.
    1. calais50
yeah, I'd take an IHOP waffle over a Belgian waffle any day!
      In your face, Belgium!
    2. Shy
      Belgium SUCKS!!!! totally totally **growls**
    3. kdawg68
Luxembourg should just invade, annex, and be done with the Belgi.
    4. chrissymarie321
Only becuase you wanna eat all their chocolate
  7. farangrakthai
France and Italy would be my top choices, followed by Spain.
And well, Belgium if you like beer and chocolate...
    1. visitmaniac
Awesome picks! I am heading there in just 2 weeks to visit Spain, France and Italy
  8. Sebastyne
I'd go to Estonia and Tallinn. I love the place, and would rather see Tallinn than Helsinki, even though I've lived there for 3 years. But if anyone is going to Finland, I would recommend Tampere over Helsinki.

I would not go to Paris to be honest, but that's just me. I don't like the place. It's... I don't know... Cold in the atmosphere. Amsterdam is interesting, and London. But I'd still go to Estonia - or why not Denmark indeed? Portugal and Italy are two places I haven't visited, but would like to.
    1. calais50
Estonia, huh? I've never heard it mentioned as a vacation destination. Interesting. I would love to go to Spain and visit portugal while i'm there.
  9. farangrakthai
    Portugal is sure nice also.
  10. dosyrosie
Well, I have been to Italy and France. I would say that Italy was great, both the North and the South, a nice range of history and culture and relaxation all in one.
Also check out the Czech Republic, not quite European but we went for a weekend and it was my favourite holiday! Friendly people, great history, and the best public transport system I've ever seen!!
But I would also like to say a little ad for us lot here in Scotland, there is great history here and the scenery is breathtaking!!
    1. calais50
Czech republic, another place you don't hear about much as a vacation spot. I will have to czech it out (ok that was terrible!) I saw a travel channel show about Croatia that made me want to visit. Scotland does look very lovely. In photos it looks even greener than ireland.
  11. farangrakthai
Prague is one of the oldest city in Europe and one of the nicest.
And well, if you like beer, one of the nicest also...
    1. calais50
Count me in, but I don't think my b/f would be too happy since he lives part of the time in Czech's next door neighbor, Poland.
    2. farangrakthai
Polish people have 0 problem with Czech people, only with Russians.
And well, they do not usually drink much beer.
      They're more into stronger stuff...
    3. calais50
Oh, he's not Polish. He thinks the cold weather sucks.
    4. Sonnenblumen
Life is cheap in Prag, don't buy all the touristy stuff about old Prag buildings, what about the endemic crime scene, porn clubs, russian mafia etc. Every bar/club has security, that says enough for me. Sorry, but not a place to spend holiday time?

As for beer, apart from Budvar, Czech beer is well for locals!

Southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland, safe, clean, memorable but most of all for outstanding and unrivalled natural beauty.

    Welcome to Europe

I've visited many European countries. Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Finland, Sweden ... You should see all of them. But these places should be at top of your list.

    Spain
    1. Barcelona. Beautiful beaches, parks, mountains and many other places to see.
    2. Mallorca. You need a week or two to see all places in this island. Rent a car.
    3. Ibiza. Island of parties and cocktails Best clubs and DJs.

    France
    1. Cote d'Azur or French Riviera, Nice, Sait Tropez, Cannes. Superior views, beautiful sandy beaches, burning sun, French food and wine!

    Monaco
    1. One-day-country. One hour by car from France, Nice. Monte Carlo Casino, Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium, rare and expensive cars, celebrities.

You would not regret. Believe me.
    1. calais50
Great recommendations. I would love to visit Spain and try out my Spanish and visit Monaco and see "the beautiful people." Does Monaco speak French?
    2. seozero
      Only French
