Last night I watched "PS I Love You" with Hilary Swank. I don't usually like romantic comedies, but this one was a little different, and I really liked it. What movie(s) do you recommend to BC'ers?

    The Pianist

I'd watch this for several times

3:10 To Yuma -- if you like Western movies -- this is a great pick!

I also really enjoyed American Gangster. Denzel is amazing in this movie!

I thought these were both great movies. I didn't expect to like 3:10 to Yuma, but the tension, the action and the story really pulled me in.

I watched 3:10. It WAS really good. A movie that people keep recommending that I hated is "No country for Old Men." Yeah, the quirky killer character is cool, but I still didn't like it.

I completely agree... I thought I was going to dislike 3:10 to Yuma and I ended up loving it. I was really surprised with Russell Crowe's performance because I have never been a big fan of his movies.

"no Country for Old Men" was well acted, well done, but we didn't like it very much either.

Oh, another movie I recommend is Dangerous Liasons, the version with John Malkovich and Annette Bening. It's a period movie in the age of powdered wigs, which I love.

    All About my Mother
    The Pianist

Love all of the above, great movies, great stories, great acting.

All about my mother is a great film.

Life is Beautiful is a heartbreakingly wonderful film. I agree. And Billy Elliot is fantastic as well.

You are a person of good taste!

You see, that is my own personal site devoted to finding old, obscure or possibly awful movies. Feel free to read any of my reviews to find something "off the map" to watch.

Thanks Katuluu. Will check it out. I think it's only a shameless plug if your blog has nothing to do with the topic, but it fits in nicely.

Don't know if anyone said this already...but The Wackness is awesome. Its a bit indie, but well made and great story line.
    1. Katuluu
Nice choice but not many people are going to be able to see it for a few more weeks when it gets a wider release.

I would recommend these little known British films if you really want a good laugh.

    Withnail and I.
    Rita, Sue and Bob too.
Any of the Carry on series.

Bucket List - Directed by Rob Reiner. With Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Sean Hayes. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry!
    1. JanelleV
I've been wanting to see that one!
    2. calais50
I've heard of the movie, but can someone tell me what a bucket list is?
    3. Katuluu
It's a list of things people want to do before they "kick the bucket".

I was pleasantly surprised by Shakespeare in Love ... I'm like you, I don't normally like romantic comedies, so I didn't watch this movie for a long time, but saw it not too long ago and really liked it.
    1. calais50
I would probably like it as well since I like movies set around that era.

A comedy that I really enjoyed was "Idiocracy" with Luke Wilson. Yes, it was low brow, but I still got a kick out of it.

Juneut is an outstanding director. Be sure to check out some of his other films like Delicatessen and especially The City of Lost Children.

Wit with emma thompson I think not for the faint hearted story about an english professor and her struggle with cancer based on an award winning play

I just saw Vantage Point last weekend...it was great.

One of my favorite movies is Love Actually. It follows the funny and heartbreaking paths we all take as we deal with love. Originally, I was suspicious of it because I thought it would be sappy... But it's not. I wound up buying it and watch it at least twice a year.
    1. calais50
      Yes very good.
    2. MidwestMom
Yes, this is such a strong story. I really identified with the characters, and although I knew how it had to end, I found myself wanting to stop it from happening anyway. Who was that lead actor?
    3. foodvu
Emile Hirsch. MidwestMom, I felt the same. Still thought it had a great message regardless of how it ended.

I like these movies because they illustrate the nature of causality.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame, 1925 movie starring Lon Chaney. Be prepared to read a lot of sub-titles. This was a silent film.
