I love "Life is Beautiful." It's from a few years ago, and yes, there are subtitles, but it's a bittersweet story that will bring both laughter and tears.

I saw a movie that blew me away. If you want an awkward, yet well acted and ineresting suspense, definitely check out May, from 2003. www.rottentomatoes.com/m/may/

    frozen river

    (all released this past year)

Seven Years in Tibet. My all-time favorite. A true story about a Nazi athletic hero who became a friend of the Dalai Lama and who was changed forever because of his association. The 2 remain friends to this very day.
    1. Friday13
Actually, Heinrich Harrer died a couple of years back. They were indeed friends until the end.
    2. LynneaUrania
      I'm sorry to hear that.

Let The Right One In, it isn't as good as the novel, but focusing only on fore story rather than the back story makes it a great stand alone movie...

I forgot another pretty good one is Poolhall Junkies.
  20. pinkmimosa
Lone Star State of Mind, a sleeper that should have been a big hit. Singer John Cougar Mellancamp is in it. Plays an idiot. Hilarious!

    The Wackness starring Ben Kingsley.

Yes, Mary Kate Olson was in it (and made the talk show rounds promoting it) but luckily, she was only in it for 3 minutes.

    Ghost town.

I woke my wife up laughing at that, I had to go into the bathroom for a full 5 minutes wiping my eyes - I just couldn't stop laughing. The ending was mush - but if you want a laugh - get that one.

Gran Torino. Just released. Clint Eastwood is fantastic. A shoe-in for an Academy Award. It made my list as one of the Top Ten movies of all time.
    1. destinedforwhat
i just saw this one. i'm not a clint eastwood fan and really had no interest in seeing it, but i was outvoted at the theater. i actually really liked it. it's one i will buy when it hits DVD.
  33. Majase
I just watched Far North last night. Beautiful scenery, great acting, and disturbing.

Others I've recently seen, and would recommend, is Infamous (about Truman Capote), and Gran Torino.
  34. avecchioni
Somewhat recently. . .Gone Baby Gone.

Solid, hard hitting private investigator movie set in south Boston. Ben Affleck did a wonderful job directing (he's a much better director than actor).
  35. FaeryInkPress
Definitely Slumdog Millionaire. It is one of my new favourites. I was really sceptical at first with a name like that, but just watch a trailer. It will make your heart melt.
