I was thinking about this the other day. With all the people who are scared of "Change" anf "Reform" and who "Want [their] America Back".... what if there was land set aside for them to live in their traditional manner with their backward beliefs. Where they could be free from taxation, and not be intruded upon by the people trying to "socialize" them.

It's about cultural preservation....

What are your thoughts?

I doubt if there is any place on this planet where one could be free from taxation...

The only change and reform occuring in the U.S.A. is that the democrats are giving away the citizens' money to their buddies vs. the republicans giving away the citizens' money to their buddies...

I don't think that Native Americans on the Rez have to pay taxes... do they?
    2. jeremyjanson
@Agit8r: No, but if you want to actually find work you have to look off reservation, which means payroll taxes.

The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected. Even when the revolutionist might himself repent of his revolution, the traditionalist is already defending it as part of his tradition. Thus we have two great types--the advanced person who rushes us into ruin, and the retrospective person who admires the ruins. He admires them especially by moonlight, not to say moonshine. Each new blunder of the progressive or prig becomes instantly a legend of immemorial antiquity for the snob. This is called the balance, or mutual check, in our Constitution.

At first I thought it was you who was saying this and was amazed!

But...they'll breed. Unless this reservation is, say, lunar. Then I wouldn't mind.

Harvey, that's a fantastic quote that I'd not read before. Thanks for sharing it! It just goes to show that the more things change the more they stay the same, as usual.

I wonder what the "revisionist" historians a century from now will write about our treatment of Redneck Americans?
  5. jeremyjanson
Nah. For one thing, with recent movements, failures, and polling, they now think they can win. Beyond that, one already exists, it's called Alabama, only it's outcompeteing nearly the entire US in Industrial Output and Economic Growth. I'm thinking soon it will be, how will the rednecks treat you!
    1. Agit8r
that certainly was the case for the last 8 years
    2. jeremyjanson
It's become more so. The states that suffered a big hit were CA, NY, MI, and other very nonredneck states for the most part. The only redneck state that suffered much was GA.
    3. xmarks
I wonder if that is because those states had a bigger climb and, therefore, had a bigger fall. Comparing state data to 10 years ago may give a more representative trend. (Note: I have no idea whether that analysis would suggest we start taking notes when Jeff Foxworth speaks or not).
    4. jeremyjanson
@xmarks: No, the states with the steepest climb were your "redneck" states, some of which, like OK, TX and ND, are still growing a little bit. The only redneck states that suffered were the Midwestern Rust Belt ones.

NY and CA suffered the most because 1) NY is the center of the banking industry and 2) CA had almost all of its growth from a real estate bubble; outside of real estate its economy declined for the last 10 years.

Likewise, GA suffered even though it's not in that category because it also (Atlanta) is a major center of banking and real estate related industries (Lumber, and Carpet in Dalton) That made these states the epicenter of this recent recession. Still, none of the highly developed coastal states are doing exceptionally good, although WA is doing a little better then maybe average for country as although some of their industries (auto parts especially, Lumber, and some banking, WAMU particularly) did suffer, others (aerospace, semiconductors, research and aluminum) have remembered fairly strong. The Health Care bill may deal Seattle its' death blow, however, as Biotech is one of their most important industries.

In general though, the trend has been mnore economic concentration in the Southeast, which already posses America's two largest air hubs (DFW and ATL), it's largest commercial port (New Orleans), fastest growing Automakers (Mercedes in Alabama, Honda in Alabama and Georgia, Toyota and Hyundai in Tennesee), the largest steel producing state (Alabama), the largest shipbuilders (Missippi), the 3rd largest banking center (Atlanta), and the only major media center actually expanding (Atlanta). The Southeast is also America's most populous region today, having surpassed the Northeast, Midwest, and West Coast. If the Civil War was held today, the South would win for the exact same reasons as why the North won in 1865 - more industrial production and more people.

The only "advanced states" to have kept up so far are WA and OR. The rednecks are, like it or not, dominating America, and especially the East.

Didn't the Confederates try to do that back in 1860? To 'preserve' their tradition.

I thought Redneck Reservations would be about making sure in advance you got a table that wasn't near the restrooms at the Wal-Mart McDonald's.
    1. exit2013
      Hehehe!
    2. dbowles1017
Some times they choose that table. Easier access.
  8. dbowles1017
They already exist, it's called trailer parks.

I saw Surrogates this weekend and not to give out any spoiler but the movie did contain what looked a whole lot like redneck reservations. In fact, I wonder if that is where they found their extras.

    2. dbowles1017
My bad, with the whole running away, you can see why I would have thought that
    3. jeremyjanson
@dbowles: And that makes you a lame person!
