I published a post about a free animated movie to watch and download from my blog (Creative Commons license). It's about a hindou legend partly.

www.leblogdelamirabelle.net/article-29781313.html

Here are some of the reactions I got:

"1st of all....... the " great animated movie about india" that you are talking about... its not at all great and its all a wrong presentation,.,.,.

It totally SUCKS and it is insulting!!!!

YOu cannot make fun of the GOds like this ,.,. i mean what is this ??? This is purely disgrace....
but if people have freedom of speech and make such films,.,. i have the right to talk about the insults that they are doing to OUR GODS!!

I am a Hindu and i cannot tolerate such insult of our gods!
at 55:59 Rama kicks Sita.,,.,.,. wtf is this,,.,.,. how can one such things,.,.,.,.
and
You call it great ??? I mean whats the level of thinking?? that one call's it great,..,., theres a way to put everything .... Just becuz its free you think its Great,.,.. ?????????
I wonder how any one can like such intolerable things.,..

life of nina and sita can never be compared,,.,.

I guess you are on the wrong path of learning and your interest in India,.,. you need to know all the right things from the right resources.,.

I saw the credits and was ashamed after reading that many Indians were associated with it,.,.,."

Wow! What else can you say? REmember: this is about an animated movie!!!!

Words are powerful. Religion is important to some people.
  2. LaMirabelle
Yes! But we are all expected to honor other gods and in a very specific way approved by the guardians of the faith.
    Some people just can't relax
  3. dsriharsha
I am downloading the movie right now and will surely leave a comment about what I think..

But I want to know one thing..
Are you religious? Or are you Agnostic/Atheist?
If you are religious, what is your faith?
  4. LaMirabelle
    Yes, let us know.

My religion is private. Sorry (French thing. Never ask for someones religion in France, it's private which means you can't impose it on others like it was before 1789).

Religion is no excuse for intolerance.
Everybody has a right to express his/her view of things.
Unless it's a call for murder or the like, freedom of expression rules.
    1. dsriharsha
Suit yourself.. and the question is not about imposing.. I am not trying to impose my atheistic beliefs on you.
      I asked because I wouldn't mind atheists/agnostics satirizing religions..
but if a religious person mocks other religions, it speaks of hypocrisy in most cases because they can't stand their own religion being mocked at.
    2. LaMirabelle
      I know what you mean.
But if you watch the movie you won't have the feeling that a "religious war" is intended. That would be objectionable.
It's not Christian religion versus Hindu religion.
  5. LaMirabelle
I just added an article of The Times of India to give a more balanced view. It's here: www.leblogdelamirabelle.net/article-29781313-6.html#anchorComment

may be asking/commenting on a persons religion in India is not really acceptable. French thing?
    1. LaMirabelle
Not really acceptable for whom? I'm not asking any Indian about his/her religion.
As for commenting, that's not asking people to talk about their private life so everybody has to live with it. Have you heard of freedom of expression?
Not commenting on religion? Yeah, why not burn people again? You can burn books at the same time while you're at it. Or crash a plane into a building.
Terrorism is born from intolerance, right Bernie?
    2. BernieSandwich
But you have limits -is it about thinking about other peoples limits. Freedom of expression. Can I swear at you on this site. Can a person promote the virtues of child sex. NO and rightly so. People set boundaries and they are different in each culture although we share some. You don't have a right to say whatever you want. If you have caused offense have a think about it. I you think you should appologise for causing offense -do so and move on.
    3. LaMirabelle
I said that it has to be legal. Child pornography is not. But you can insult me per mail.
You have a right to make a work of art or write an article that doesn't please someone. If they don't like it, they simply shouldn't read it.
      No apology is required.
  7. abhinavatwork
i am n hindu, I don't feel good when anyone is denigrating Gods which i worship, and which i place above everything.
Ramayana is one of the holy scriptures for hindus, in the movie 'Sita sings the blues' story of Ramayana is represented in a form which is not acceptable to those who worship Ram and follow the principles of Ramayana.
    1. LaMirabelle
      Then don't watch it.
    2. abhinavatwork
I don't want people from other religions to watch it and change their thinking about Hinduism.
    3. LaMirabelle
It doesn't give a negative view of hinduism to me.
But even if it did, you can't prevent it and you shouldn't.
You can do your own work sharing your own view of hinduism or criticize this work but not prevent it from existing.

A hard in flexible view - may be you shouldn't be so sensitive towards comments against you.

Blasphemy is illegal in some countries.
    1. flamingpoodle
Not just in some countries. It's illegal to even criticise Islamic religion and Sharia law in UN countries now.

      europenews.dk/en/node/13092

Now that is a dumb idea. If you want to believe in imaginary friends, that's your business, but then you have to suck it up when someone calls you on it. You have the right to act retarded, but you do not have the right to force the rest of us to admire you for it.
    2. LaMirabelle
Why ? The comments are not against me. I didn't produce the movie but it's nomal to defend it.
The movie is American so why do the producer care about blasphemy laws in other countries? There are irrelevant.
    1. LaMirabelle
The UK is hardly a reference in this area! Look at the terrorists they breed through a wrong understanding of tolerance (that seems to work only in one direction)!
The article says "The Church of England has signalled that it is prepared to see the abolition of blasphemy offences."
The other article says : "The last man to be sent to prison for blasphemy was John William Gott. In 1922 he was sentenced to nine months' hard labour for comparing Jesus with a circus clown. In Scotland, there has not been a public prosecution since 1843. "
A civilised country doesn't prosecute people for blasphemy.
So I'm not sure what you mean. Obviously no court acts on this silly law, hence the abrogation.

I found this on one of the websites advertised by abhinavatwork (what more is there to say about hindu zealots and how they try to silence everyone):

"I think solution to issue is vey simple.
If now any producer, director, painter, actors, NEWS CHANNEL, NEWS PAPER, POLITICIAN, AND SO ON we found doing any Any Anti-Hindu acts or insulting Hinduism.
THEN They must be punished by each Hindu of world by all possible means (no killing or injury i mean to say) for such acts.
    Unless he realize his mistake.
In fact all Muslim and Christan lobby is promotingthis acts.
The one who is producig they are not the real face behind this acts
THE REMEDY IS ONLY ONE - ANY ONE WHO IS FOUND GUILTY - THEN IT IS A DUTY OF EACH HINDU IN THOS WORLD TO PUNISH THE CULPRIT BY ANY MEANS
LET THEM GET THEIR KARMA KA FAL
TIT FOR TAT - IS QUICK SOLUTION TO ISSUE. "

You find a beautiful collection of idiot criminals here:

    1. abhinavatwork
Hey...i'm not advertising any sites like what u have done by starting this discussions. These websites ain't blogs to be advertised. I'm shocked by ur comments.People who raise their voice against injustice towards them are tagged as criminals.
  11. BernieSandwich
I see your purpose is to attack religion. Obviously you are selfish enough to not care about anything other than what you feel are your rights.
    1. LaMirabelle
Paranoia and agressivity are the trademarks of zealots.
      Glad we could confirm that.

Feel free to watch the movie folks! It's great
    2. SweetViolet
LaMirabelle--as long as you feed trolls, they will come around.

Some people just have to stir the pot, even if they make no sense and aggravate everybody around them. As long as you engage them, they will continue their attention-getting, thread hijacking ways. Ignoring them tends to have a salubrious effect.
  12. BernieSandwich
    LaMirabelle

They are all traits you displayed in your posts.

    Bernie
    1. LaMirabelle
In your case I might add delusion Bernie People like you start religious wars.
  13. jafabrit
I am sure you are not surprised by the reaction. What is your aim in showing it, to inspire dialogue, to insult, to declare your right to your opinion, your right to question?

My opinion is you have a right to yours, and your viewers have a right to theirs. Whether you want to acknowledge their right to their opinion is up to you, it's your blog

While I don't agree with all the comments, isn't cultural tolerance and understanding a two way street. they may not respect your feelings/opinion, but how does one bridge the gap if one isn't able to accept others right to their opinion or right to be offended (doesn't mean you have to cater to it or censor yourself).

oh well just my humble opinion (it was the same growing up in England, religion was considered private and one didn't ask about others beliefs)

We ran a section of "Sita" on our site some time back. It was very popular, but we did not get any "negative" comments.

So much has to do with intent. We ran Sita because it was beautifully done, and had some killer music to be sure. A feast for the senses. We wrote up the intro that way.

    screambucket.wordpress.com/2009/02/28/sita-sings-the-blues/

On the net, it's too much to expect that all 500 million folks are gonna like and agree with everything. While you are under no obligation too, you may post a defense (which will draw all kinds of hits/comments LOL), but in general - post what you want - it's still a free democracy here on the web.
    1. LaMirabelle
Of course. A lot of people will enjoy it and that's why I share it.
If it inspired discussions why not. That's what the comment section of my blog is for but so far nobody felt like launching a discussion on religion, philosophy or society.
The other ones don't need to watch but they won't prevent the rest of us to enjoy it either
Why should I post a defense? Everything you do will end up hurting someone. Do you post a defense after each sentence you write because it might insult an Inuit, a New Caledonian, a Mormon, your neighbor, an African dictator, Vladimir Putin, your congressman, local church, the Easter bunny...? Not possible, not desirable.
It's not about feeling hurt, it's about censorship and imposing on others their view of what is tolerable. They don't care if we enjoy it. They want to forbid other people to enjoy it. Normal? No.

So welcome on my blog to those who enjoy the animated movie To the rest: there are enough blogs you'll enjoy, don't force yourselves if it makes you unhappy.
  15. melindaville
Well, Mirabelle--I watched the video on your blog yesterday and liked it very much. It was very well done and I thought it was intereseting.

To those who are Hindu--it didn't make me feel negative toward your religion. I feel exactly the way I did before I watched the film--apathetic (toward all religions).
  16. Stillthinking
Wow, what a beautiful little animation! I didn't find it insulting, but also would like to add that as an American, I am not qualified to testify about how Indians would perceive an animation about their gods and goddesses.

I have a few Indian friends here in the US and have run across several cultural landmines when in conversation with them. Each situation was something I never saw coming and didn't understand. I chalked it up to cultural differences and chose to respect those differences.
  17. voodooKobra
Sounds like someone doesn't have a sense of humor. I say you post the comment as a blog post and mock them for being overly sensitive about an abstract concept.
  18. ClarisseTeagen
I'm thinking this right now :

We can do whatever we want to do, praise a religion, condemn God , anything as we please.
But we have to realize that all actions come with consequences. Some would laugh with the video. i for one am loving the graphics. and some would be infuriated by it.

And this is happening because we're all from different parts of the world with different backgrounds.

As bloggers, we have to realize where we're not responsible for how people feel later, (it's their business) but that we have to deal with it. And though some may not be pleasent. the least that we could do is to try to understand where their anger is coming from and just comprehend it.

    That is all.
and this is all part of the real world
