Ritalin stunts growth when prescribed to young children for ADHD

I have read before that Ritalin may cause brain damage and in one article that it DOES cause brain damage but I can't find that source now, so we'll stick with 'may'.
Meanwhile, it was news to me that it has been found under clinical trials to result in stunted growth.
Is this common knowledge?

It is said to cause brain damage similar to that seen in cocaine users, but re growth it refers to 'height'.

Who knows I guess... I have two brothers who took ritalin with one being taller and one shorter than I am. (I've always held a grudge against the one who was taller though. Perhaps his dosage was too low?)

If you're asking about this for a blog post, there is a better way to do research. And people here probably don't want to be quoted. If you are concerned about someone in your personal life, it is usually best to consult a doctor.
-
I haven't quoted anyone here so what are you worrying about now?
Why don't you actually wait till I actaully do something wrong before constantly telling me as you love to do, what I should and should not be doing.
I have not said anything about anyone on this board neither do I ever intend to, clear?
For your information I am guaging a possible reaction to a recent blog post on this subject matter which from past experience I know will be very controversial and won't go down well with those who have ADHD kids or have ADHD.
-
I can tell from the replies here ADHD is an accepted condition which makes my view fairly controversial though I know many support it also.
Anyway research concluded. I'll not involve you in any more.
*not tonight anyway*
now have your moan-
but, you weren't asking if ADHD was an accepted condition? I've grown up with it as being so, been in the DSM-IV forever it seems. Then there's AADHD and such. I'm not a fan of drugs, but there is a lot of information out there. If truly interested, you might want to check pubmed (online medical journal article repository). While you probably won't have the subscriptions to access all the articles, a number of them are open to all subscription levels (including free to the public).
I love my pubmed

If my questions are prying stoneman that is for the reader to decide for themselves not for you to decide for them.
I'm not holding a barrel to their heads to reply.
It's easy not to, you should try it some time. -
I was responding your anxious reaction to my thread. Don't take everything so literal, and please STOP reading my threads. You don't like me, you don't like my work. Relieve yourself of my existance by not reading me.
-
stoneman I don't need to take your advice re posting less, if people don't want to read they won't. You are in no position to dictate anything to me, much less how often I post.

Okay. Fair enough. You're only up to two pages worth in half a month anyway: www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/user/CreativeBlogger .

your obsession with me is not healthy.
You follow my threads, you read my blogs why the heck do you read my blogs? I see you there nearly every day and every day in my personal profile too, why? I think you need to just take a break from creative blogger. -
I think you should a exercise a little self control when you get the urge to post something like this.
This is meant to be a discussions area, not a research site for a subject you obviously know little about.
Stop reading these things on the internet, its dangerous.
Gay presidents, adhd problems, what next? -
Regardless of most of the above discussion.
The possible over usage of Ritalin has gotten quite a bit of press in a number of different areas lately. Here is one area of inquiry. www.we-relax.com/news-and-science/divorce-ritalin.htm -
Good heavens. Get a grip! Stoneman has a point, you know. Some of those questions are a bit prying and do sound like field research questions.
Oh the other hand, the whole loose cannon bit seems a tad uncalled for, but then I don't know the history behind it.
Please, you two, take a chill pill and think before posting. -
i've taken ritalin since i was in 9th grade. I'm 6'3 and 180. If anything it suppresses your appetite which could contribute to weight loss but your doctor, if he is any good, will be checking your weight ever 6 months and will lower your dosage if you are.
i take adderal now and it is much better at not suppressing your appetite.
fighting isnt going to teach anyone anything so might be best to keep it to informing instead of fight you guys ;-)-
Thank you!
Anyway, I was only diagnosed with ADD last year and was told that medication wouldn't help much if at all. Personally, I don't like the idea of taking pills. It feels too much like I'd get all doped up and not be able to think the way I like to.
But that's me. I just really don't like medicine.

do you ever take vitamins brigid?
re ritalin- you wont feel like you are getting all doped up if your doctor is smart and monitors your dosage. if you do feel doped up, and taking too much if you are truly adhd will make you feel spacey and not hyper, you should be taking a lower dosage of ritalin. the docc will jsut prescribe you 5 or 10 mgs lower. -
interesting take on add/adhd ... dr. daniel amen has done a lot of PET scans on the brains of add/adhd folk ... and normal attention folk. he's identified 5 or 6 different variations of the add spectrum. very interesting work ... and i find the brain scans more interesting than the more observational testing of the dsm IV at the moment.
-
and i don't disagree with that at all. that's actually one reason that i like dr. amen's take on add/adhd ... he's done a lot of what some would call "holistic" work with the disorder, including diet and exercise.
i haven't taken any adhd meds in well over a year now. my other half still takes meds and rather wishes i would ... but i'm working on other ways of working thru it.
