It was a great match. Not quite as good as last year's, but great just the same. I wanted Roddick to win since he's from the U.S.

Yes, Sampras is definitively amongst the goat's :) Agassi is there or close (I can't fully remember his results). Although I didn't particular like his game, Lendl had an impressive record too. To answer dsriharsha, this may be a subjective question. I would personally vote for a mix of grand slam results and playing style.

Truthfully, I think Sampras, IN HIS PRIME, would have killed Federer. Sampras had one of the nastiest games in tennis. He had a monster serve and his backhand was ridiculous.

I also believe that Agassi, IN HIS PRIME, would have split his matches 50/50 with Federer. I still believe that if Agassi had been focussed throughout his career, he would have gone down as the greatest tennis player ever.

It's a bit much to say Federer is goat. I think he is amongst a handful who have dominated their epoch (Borg, McEnroe, Becker, etc.)
you left out Rod Laver.. but anyway, who do you think can be considered GOAT.. or if that is a very tough task, how about top 3 across all time?

Ironically, Marat Safin had his worst slam results here though he fits the description

I am glad he won because I like his forward playing and elegant style (much why I liked Edbergs game, or McEnroes). Versus the hardhitting baseline "lifters", many of whom only achieve success at the French Open. These type of players are few and far between.

He might be.
He is freakin awesome.

I'd like to see him find a way to deal with Rafael Nadal in a sound way.
I like Nadal, but would love to see Federer completely embarrass him once. Establish some kind of dominance over him.

That will likely never happen though.
