What do you think is the saddest song ever? I'm talking about those type of songs that pull at the emotional strings, tie them in knots and leave you in a state of shock.

Kinda like: Black Labs "This Night" (www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vK5yn0HOxU) - I heard this song when it was used in a promo of Shield Season 6. I find it deep, disturbing and effecting.

Post similar songs that you've found and I'll create a playlist on www.vnertia.com and www.vnertia.com/mnap

I was going to say the same song. I do not know the title. About the little boy trying to purchase shoes for his dying mother. I actually weep.

Wait, that's a song? I thought it was a made-for-TV movie with Rob Lowe.

The version of "Mad World" from the Donnie Darko soundtrack always strikes me as being extremely sad.

Dolly Parton also did a tune called "Me and Little Andy" which bothered me quite a bit as akid.

"Wreck Of The Emma Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot

I was in the Navy, so this was an easy pick.

2nd place - When Britney Spears did a remake of "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones. I wanted to cry when I heard it.

For me it's "Bad Timing" by Blue Rodeo ... it's a beautiful song but reminds me so much of a time when my heart was broken...that it always makes me cry! But I still listen to it!

Recommendation #1: "There Were Roses," true story of friends, one Catholic, the other Protestant in Northern Ireland. The Protestant is murdered, so a gang of Protestants go out to kill a Catholic in revenge.

"'Allan was my friend!' he cried. He begged them with his fear,
But centuries of hatred have ears that cannot hear.
An eye for an eye was all that filled their minds
And another eye for another eye till everyone is blind.

    "There were roses, roses.
    There were roses.
And the tears of the people ran together."
    -by Tommy Sands

Recommendation #2: Not a sad song, but a good remedy for sadness. I like to play it with my sad song soundtrack. The song is "Bad Day," by Daniel Powter, and to get the full effect, it's definitely best to watch the video that goes with it, full of people having bad days.

    1. mynewplace
that was going to be my response. tears in heaven gets you right there.

"long black veil" also sad, but not a tearjerker.

Unfortunatley Luther never got to perform this song live.

omg, this one is too hard to watch it's so sad. wow.
    2. Nesianstyle
Actually I take that back as 1st equal saddest song along with this one:

It's probably not really a sad song but being a father I must admit I got 'sweaty eyes'

I almost forgot one that my husband wrote

    "CARING TO LIVE"

My family regreted, the style I've been living,

So they forgot me as easy as time.

I grew up bewildered, on roads that were lonesome.

Learning to hate my chances to love.

A southern exposure, peeks through my window.

Only to find me crying alone.

The space between us, leaves me to wonder.

Who is caressing, the warmth of your charm.

The child under your wing, knows me in a picture.

Will she remember, the rides on my knee.

You never notice, the pain I am wearing.

Hid by a smile, yet burns through my soul.

The more that I witness, the more I am angry.

For staying around as long as I have.

The hinge on to you life, is only a handle.

Held by the demons, that bleed through your mind.

I leave you with this thought, as I find my exit.

Returning to freedom, I'm walking alone.

I know it's not healthy, but show me a reason.

For living and caring for caring to live.

you’re the one, the one I believe in
never had a love so strong, all my faith resides in you
so I go to all the places where we used to be as one
I can hear you calling me

You’re the one I always remember
You’re the one the one for me
Eternal love but change came suddenly

    I
I still can see you and I , I’m at your side
I, I still can feel you
Coz I’m there, on the other side

there’s no one no one to replace you
you’re the one that shines for me
gotta go where no one else can go
I’m the one, the one that will follow
and I see a ray of light
you’re my beacon in the night
I can feel, feel you coming
    gonna kiss the deadly sin
and I hear, hear you calling; now I’m answering

    I, I still can see you…

Come with me to the other side
Follow me to the other side …

I wrote this poem a while back - I read it now and I'm like "WTF" and find it disturbing but such is the mountians and valleys of life.

    Another sunset, another sunrise,
Loneliness, my bedmate, awakens by my side.
Loneliness never smiles, never kisses me on the cheek,
She just depletes my vigor and makes me feel weak.
She shadows me during my morning routine,
Just there, never saying or doing anything,
Sitting and watching me, doesn’t even care,
    Loneliness wants to be elsewhere.

I internally scream at her, “Just go away!”
But loneliness just looks at me, dumbfounded, with nothing to say.
    She sits and stares,
She so wants to be elsewhere.

But I’m in love, not with loneliness to be sure,
I can feel loves passion course through me to the core.
Love reconstructs my life, my hopes and my dreams,
My love, my deepest emotion, and in love, my soul is redeemed.
She is first for me, always first - present in all that I do,
Loneliness knows my loves name, and fades as I pursue.
Loneliness sits and watches, doesn’t even care,
She so wants to make room for love, to be elsewhere.

How can this be – “Lonely and In Love?”,
I ask loneliness, but she just sits there – doesn’t even shrug.
I know she sneaks in as I’m waiting, and she just sits and stares,
She doesn’t want to be here, she so wants to be elsewhere.

It’s another day, of which I’ll make the most,
I’ll leave loneliness at home, hoping she’ll leave as I’m not a gracious host.
Over the last couple of weeks, she’s home too often, too present in my life,
I hope she isn’t home, she’s too silent and causes too much strife.
My love is powerful, forever, everlasting and chaste,
It’s in love that I find my strength, and the solitude I use to embrace.
Loneliness is there because I’m missing something in the middle,
My love desires companionship, of which I have too little.

I know without a doubt – “My love, loves me?”,
Loneliness blindly knows it too – and she doesn’t even see.
One day I’ll awake and loneliness will say goodbye,
She doesn’t want to be here, she doesn’t want to be by my side.

It's copyrighted by me - that's why I was looking for the Poetry blogs earlier - my book "The Ravens Love" will be published in the next month or so. This poem will not be in the book though.

I'll post an excerpt of my book - if you guys/gals want to see it?

The story plays from the point of view of a vampire – but the author (me) compares the immortality of a vampire to a poet – that is, he only dies when there is a strike/stake to the heart.

"The Ravens Love" will be sold on my site www.vnertia.com and www.vnertia.com/mnap.

If you're looking for a really powerful heartbreaking song, Vienna Teng's 'Passage' will do the trick.

I died in a car crash two days ago
    Was unrecognizable
When they pulled me from the gears
No one's fault, no one's bottle
No one's teenage pride or throttle
Our innocence is all the worse for fears
    The other walked away alive
Arms wrapped now around his wife

My lover sits, the silent eye
In a hurricane of warmth and word
My mother trembles with the sobs
    Whose absence seems absurd
My sister shouts to let her see
Through the cloud of crowd surrounding me
My colleagues call for silence in my name

I died in a car crash three months ago
They burned me until I glowed
And crumbled to a fine gray sand
    Now I am nothing, everywhere
    Several breaths of strangers' air
And all thoughts ever written in my hand
They plant my tree out in the yard
It grows but takes the winter hard

My lover holds a knife to wrist
Says tomorrow comes, hold on a while
My mother tosses in the sheets
And dreams me holding my own child
My sister plays our homemade tapes
Laughs as tears run down her face
My office door now wears a different name

I died in a car crash four years ago
    My tree drinks melted snow
Just eight feet tall a pale and fragile thing
    Bee stings beaches bright vacations
    Sunburnt high-school graduations
A sparrow healing from a broken wing
This year a glimpse of second chances
Tiny apples on my tree's branches

My lover hears the open wind
And crawls blinking into the sun
    My mother leafs through photographs
And thinks "yes she was a lovely one"
My sister can't decide her truth
Asks aloud what I might do
In a conference hall my brief efforts engraved

I died in a car crash
    A lifetime ago it seems
A decade or two or three
They've come out with a new design
Bars and bags front and behind
    My fate now an impossibility
    Safely packaged hurtling down
The highway hardly make a sound

    My lover very much alive
Arms wrapped now around his wife

Danz - That was so 'awesome' for lack of a better word. I like the feel of the song as a story and it can only be delivered acapella or possibly with a McLachlan piano score.

Seasons in the sun - Terry Jacks

Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we climbed hills and trees
    Learned of love and A B C's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.

Goodbye my friend it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
    Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
    Out of time......

Goodbye Papa please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
    Wonder how I got along.

Goodbye Papa its hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
    Little children everywhere
When you see them I'll be there.

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
    Have all gone.

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
    Have all gone.

    Goodbye Michelle my little one
You gave me love and helped me find the sun
And every time that I was down
    You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground.

Goodbye Michelle it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
    With the flowers everywhere
I wish that we could both be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
    Have all gone

All our lives we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
    Out of time......

This is a real tearjerker especially when you know the history...I have a hard time listening to this song.
    2. Arcticulates
ahhh Yes, this song brings back memories! very sad!

Billy Don't be a Hero! I still can hear it as I write it!

I think they were around near the same time! Not sure tho!
    3. MadameX
Yes, there was a whole batch of tragic story songs all around the same time:

      Billy Don't Be a Hero
      Run Joey Run
The Last Game of the Season
      One Tin Soldier
      Seasons in the Sun

I'm sure there were more--that's all I can think of right now.

Hello In There by John Prine

We had an apartment in the city,
Me and Loretta liked living there.
Well, it'd been years since the kids had grown,
A life of their own left us alone.
John and Linda live in Omaha,
And Joe is somewhere on the road.
We lost Davy in the Korean war,
And I still don't know what for, don't matter anymore.

Ya' know that old trees just grow stronger,
And old rivers grow wilder ev'ry day.
    Old people just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello."

Me and Loretta, we don't talk much more,
She sits and stares through the back door screen.
And all the news just repeats itself
Like some forgotten dream that we've both seen.
Someday I'll go and call up Rudy,
We worked together at the factory.
But what could I say if he asks "What's new?"
"Nothing, what's with you? Nothing much to do."

So if you're walking down the street sometime
And spot some hollow ancient eyes,
Please don't just pass 'em by and stare
As if you didn't care, say, "Hello in there, hello."
  79. Clueless
The Unicorn Song by the Irish Rover's in the 1960's. Words and music Shel Silverstein. The first time I heard this I burst into tears...I'm a bit sentimental

"A long time ago, when the Earth was green
There was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen
They'd run around free while the Earth was being born
And the loveliest of all was the unicorn

There was green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
The loveliest of all was the unicorn

The Lord seen some sinning and it gave Him pain
And He says, "Stand back, I'm going to make it rain"
He says, "Hey Noah, I'll tell you what to do
    Build me a floating zoo,
    and take some of those...

    Green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
    Don't you forget My unicorns

Old Noah was there to answer the call
He finished up making the ark just as the rain started to fall
He marched the animals two by two
And he called out as they came through
    Hey Lord,

I've got green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn
I just can't find no unicorns"

And Noah looked out through the driving rain
Them unicorns were hiding, playing silly games
Kicking and splashing while the rain was falling
    Oh, them silly unicorns

There was green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Noah cried, "Close the door because the rain is falling
And we just can't wait for no unicorns"

The ark started moving, it drifted with the tide
The unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away
That's why you never see unicorns to this very day

You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
You're never gonna see no unicorns"

Also, I can't listen to last verse of Puff the Magic Dragon.

"A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, jackie paper came no more
And puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave,
So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh!"

Also, can't listen to the end of Mr. Bojangles.

"He danced for those at minstrel shows and county fairs throughtout the south
He spoke with tears of 15 years of how his dog and him but just travelled all about
His dog up and died, he up and died, and after 20 years he still grieves
    Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles, dance"

Okay, last one from me I promise. The Christmas Shoes Song by Bob Carlisle. If this song doesn't get to you...

    "It was almost Christmas time
There I stood in another line
Trying to buy that last gift or two
I'm really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me
Was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing around like little boys do
And in his hands he held
    A pair of shoes

And his clothes were worn and old
He was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my Momma please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
    Could you hurry Sir?
Daddy says there's not much time
You see, she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes will make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful
    If Momma meets Jesus, tonight.

They counted pennies for what seem like years
And cashier says son there's not enough here
    He searches is pockets franticly
And he turned and he looked at me
And he said Momma made Christmas good at our house
Most years she just did without
    Tell me Sir
    What am I gonna do?
Some how I’ve got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I layed the money down
I just had to help him out
    And I'll never forget
    The look on his face
When he said Momma's gonna look so great.

Sir I wanna buy these shoes, for my Momma please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
    Could you hurry Sir?
Daddy says there's not much time
You see, she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes will make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful,
    If Momma meets Jesus tonight.

I knew I caught a glimpse of heavens love as he thanked me and ran out.
I know that God had sent that little boy to remind me
    What Christmas is all about

Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my Momma please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
    Could you hurry Sir?
Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes will make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful
    If Momma meets Jesus tonight

I want her to look beautiful
    If Momma meets Jesus tonight"

I saw Les Miserables on stage in Philly a few weeks ago (the title is French for "less miserable," since (spoiler alert) the maincharacters are less miserable at the end than they were at the beginning (that's because they died and went to heaven).
Anyway, it's got some incredibly sad songs, particularly the one Fantine sings when she's just lost her job and has to become a prostitute and the one she sings when she's about to die and leave her little girl destitute, and the one that other girl sings because she's running through gunfire for unrequited love.
    1. MadameX
No, it's not. "Les" is the French plural word "the". The title means roughly "The miserable ones" or "The wretches". The French word for "less" is "moins".

      Agree about the songs, though.

    Angel ~ Sarah McLachlan
    Spend all your time waiting
    For that second chance
For a break that would make it okay
    There’s always one reason
    To feel not good enough
And it’s hard at the end of the day
    I need some distraction
    Oh beautiful release
    Memory seeps from my veins
    Let me be empty
    And weightless and maybe
    I’ll find some peace tonight

I think The Saddest Song by The Ataris is the saddest song ever. It's about a guy who's childs mother will not let him see his child. Only two more days, until your birthday
    Yesterday was mine
    You'll be turning five
I know what it's like, growing up without your father in your life
So I pretend, I'm doing all I can
And I hope someday you'll find it in your heart

    To understand
    Why I'm not around
And forgive me for not being in your life

    I remember waiting
    For you to come
    Remember waiting
    For you to call
Remember waiting there to find nothing at all
    I remember waiting
    For you to come
    Remember waiting
    For you to call
Waiting there to find nothing at all

    maybe someday
you really get to know me
not just the letters read to you
I pray I get the chance
To make it up to you
We got a lot of catching up to do

So I pretend, I'm doing all I can
And hope someday you'll find it in your heart

    To understand
    Why I'm not around
And forgive me for not being in your life

    I remember waiting
    For you to come
    Remember waiting
    For you to call
Remember waiting there to find nothing at all
    I remember waiting
    For you to come
    Remember waiting
    For you to call
Waiting there to find nothing at all

    Forgive me!
    I'm so sorry!
I will make it up to you....

I realize that instrumental music is a lot more subjective, but Miles Davis had some solos that sound so lonely they really get me, particularly in "Sssh/Peaceful."

I agree "The Christmas Shoes" makes me cry every time.
Also One Sweet Day- with lyrics like this:
And I know you're shining down on me from Heaven,
Like so many friends we've lost along the way,
And I know eventually we'll be together.
    One sweet day.

Hurt by Johnny Cash, but the saddest song I have ever heard, which sends chills down my spine each and every time I hear it, is Big John, also by Johnny Cash.
Seriously that song brings a tear to my eye at the same point every time

CONCRETE ANGEL ~ MARTINA MCBRIDE www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDm03Foq2T0

She walks to school with the lunch that she packed
Nobody knows what she's holdin' back
Wearin' the same dress she wore yesterday
she hides the bruises with the linen and lace oh

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
    Concrete angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear, but they turn out the lights
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it'll be too late

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot

    For me -- it's Brad Paisley's "When I get Where I'm Going"

It was played at my dad's wake & I cry every time I hear it.

When I get where I'm going
On the far side of the sky
The first thing that I'm gonna do
Is spread my wings and fly

I'm gonna land beside a lion
And run my fingers through his mane
Or I might find out what it's like
To ride a drop of rain

    [Chorus]
Yeah when I get where I'm going
    There'll be only happy tears
I will shed the sins and struggles
I have carried all these years
And I'll leave my heart wide open
I will love and have no fear
Yeah when I get where I'm going
Don't cry for me down here

I'm gonna walk with my grand daddy
And he'll match me step for step
And I'll tell him how I missed him
    Every minute since he left
    Then I'll hug his neck

    [Repeat chorus]

So much pain and so much darkness
In this world we stumble through
All these questions I can't answer
    So much work to do

But when I get where I'm going
And I see my maker's face
I'll stand forever in the light
    Of his amazing grace
Yeah when I get where I'm going
    There'll be only happy tears
    Hallelujah
I will love and have no fear
When I get where I'm going
Yeah when I get where I'm going

    Minstrel Boy

the minstrel boy to the war has gone
in the ranks of dead you will find him

his father's sword he hath girded on
and his wild harp slung behind him.

"Land of song" cried the warrior bard
though all the world betrays thee

One sword at least thy rights shall guard
one faithful harp shall praise thee.

    ***************

The minstrel fell but the foeman's chains
could not bring his proud soul under.

The harp he loved ne'er spoke again
for he tore it's chords assunder.

And said "no chains shall sully thee
Thou soul of love and bravery!

Thy songs were made for the pure and free
they shall never sound for slavery."

Sort of made famous by the film Black Hawk Down, but it's been around for years and IIRC was even popular back during the U.S. Civil War.

    Whenever sang my songs
On the stage, on my own
    Whenever said my words
    Wishing they would be heard
I saw you smiling at me
Was it real or just my fantasy
You'd always be there in the corner
    Of this tiny little bar
My last night here for you
Same old songs, just once more
My last night here with you?
    Maybe yes, maybe no
I kind of liked it your way
How you shyly placed your eyes on me
    Oh, did you ever know?
That I had mine on you

    *Darling, so there you are
With that look on your face
    As if you're never hurt
    As if you're never down
Shall I be the one for you
Who pinches you softly but sure
    If frown is shown then
I will know that you are no dreamer

So let me come to you
Close as I wanted to be
    Close enough for me
To feel your heart beating fast
And stay there as I whisper
How I loved your peaceful eyes on me
    Did you ever know
That I had mine on you

    Darling, so share with me
Your love if you have enough
You're tears if you're holding back
Or pain if that's what it is
How can I let you know
I'm more than the dress and the voice
    Just reach me out then
You will know that you're not dreaming x2

    Tears In Heaven
by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings

    Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
    Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

    I must be strong
    And carry on,
    'Cause I know I don't belong
    Here in heaven.

    Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
    Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

    I'll find my way
    Through night and day,
    'Cause I know I just can't stay
    Here in heaven.

    Time can bring you down,
    Time can bend your knees.
    Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.

    Beyond the door,
    There's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more
    Tears in heaven.

    Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
    Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

    I must be strong
    And carry on,
    'Cause I know I don't belong
    Here in heaven.
