"A family in Saudi Arabia is taking a "genie" to court, accusing it of theft and harassment, reports say.

They accuse the spirit of threatening them, throwing stones and stealing mobile phones, Al Watan newspaper said."

I think I have a genie too, he always hides my keys...

And I thought Americans had a monopoly on frivolous lawsuits.

I'm wondering what kind of wages a genie earns that the courts could actually garnish or attach?

Do genies have good salaries, because I thought they were all a bit under paid.
    1. Agit8r
      they can grant wishes, right?
    2. Anok
My understanding is that yes, they can grant wishes but that they always come with some sort of unintended consequences, so I think that in and of itself would nullify the lawsuit.

But in any case, I still don't think they get paid much. I mean, they live in a bottle - it's like one step up from a cardboard box.
    3. Agit8r
      "some sort of unintended consequences"

this reminds me of a joke...
    4. Anok
No jokes! Gnomes are bad enough as is....

Yeah, I was under the impression that their work was largely indentured servitude with some strings attached.
  7. acousticguitarist
    well i think it's true
  8. carsonfb
Why don't they wish for the genie to leave?
    1. rainforestrobin

Court investigates jinn who evicted family

MADINA – The Shariah Court in Mahd Al-Dhahab in the south east of Madina is probing a complaint that is causing a mix of bafflement, fear and mirth, after a family claimed that jinn – invisible demons or ghosts that interact with the world of humans - were trying to evict them from their home by threats and harassment.

Al-Watan newspaper said Wednesday that the family reported the pesky presence to the authorities citing irritating behavior such as stealing mobile telephones at night and putting them back in different places, and more threatening postures like throwing stones at them, and even calling them on the telephone to tell them to leave their home.

“We have lived in the house for 15 years and felt no presence until about two years ago,” the father of the family, who wished to remain anonymous, told Al-Watan. “We began to hear strange sounds, which at first we did not take seriously, but then stranger things started to happen and the children got particularly scared when the jinn started throwing stones.”

The father said the jinn entered the house and took his children’s mobile telephones and called him.
“A woman spoke to me first, and then a man,” the father said. “They said we should get out of the house.”
The same mobiles, he claims, were found carelessly replaced in the house the following day.
Officials sent by the court to assess the situation say they failed to detect any jinn-related activity.
“A case such as this is difficult, but we have to check its veracity,” said Amr Al-Sulami, head of the Shariah Court in Mahd Al-Dhahab. “What is interesting is that the complaint has come from every member of the family, and not just one.”

Al-Sulami said that a local charity had provided the family with alternative accommodation near to their village of Al-Farah until the issue was resolved.

The jinn, according to islamonline, are “an independent and separate world with its own distinct nature and features that are hidden from the world of humans. Jinns and humans have things in common, such as the ability to understand and choose between good and evil. The word jinn comes from the Arabic root meaning ‘hidden from sight’.”

Can I sue my cat for taking my food?? At least my cat is physically here and I know the address to send the lawsuit papers
    1. acousticguitarist
take it fishing, put it in a cage next to you. Then catch and fry some really nice fish, all the time waving at the cat as you eat. Don't forget to pass the plate just pass the cage
    2. chicky401
      LMAO No wait ROFLMAO

As a visitor to parallel worlds, I'm am convinced the issue is with the people not the spirit. The spirit is trying to tell them to sort out something in their lives. As for the court case, this brings new meaning to judgement day... who's on the jury?
    1. rainforestrobin
LMAO!!! Re: "Who's on the jury?"
  13. stnczyk
For those of you who think this kind of lawsuit couldn't happen in the U.S.A., well think again! It happened in Pennsylvania in 1971. You can read more about it in my most recent blog post, inspired by this topic:

Courts around the whole world are full of non sense cases ,any way i still do not believe that news otherwise i wold have of read it since it was published in Al-Watan newspaper and in Saudi Gazette.
    1. Epicharis
The BBC are not in the habit of making up news stories, and they say that the details were published in Al Watan newspaper. I wasn't making a racist comment in posting this story, I was just posting something I found amusing. Had the story been about a British family I would have found it equally amusing.
  15. hayesstw
    Howwill they deliver the summons?
    1. Anok
      A summoning spell?

    Hi SiuilARuin
I really know that your comment is not racist ,the story is amusing and funny but i'm just saying that this story is not in those news papers. and i never heard it locally ,it is only from BBC I EVEN TWEETED THE BBC LINK TO MY FRIENDS AND THEY ARE LAUGHING from the top the their lungs.

Sorry if i upset you by any way

Hmm... I guess - *IF THEY WIN* .... rather than a settlement of cash or anything .. they'll want .... 3 wishes?

      already went there
    2. PetLvr
I see that now - I prefer to just blindly comment sometimes, before reading the popular threads. It helps keep me oblivious.

will the genie go to prison, then?
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Isn't the solitary confinement of a bottle enough?
    2. idealpinkrose
ohhh...that's right! I think the genie got angry with them because they opened the bottle. They have to put him back in the bottle. hehehe...
    3. rainforestrobin
No his prison term will be spent "out of the bottle". In fact I heard that the court was going to shoot him into outer space in a Maxwell Coffee can and let him drift for 100 years.
  20. greencurmudgeon
This is taken much more seriously in the Middle East, as genies ("jinn") are mentioned in the Qu'ran as being among God's creatures. This belief persists; it is mentioned in Naguib Mahfouz's novel "Palace Walk" at the very beginning: the lady of the house proceeds through the darkness, reciting verses from the Qu'ran dispel spirits lurking in the shadows, and this was set in the twentieth century.

How they intend to sue, however, is rather interesting; they'd be better off trying what the lady of the house did in Mahfouz's book.
  21. melindaville
I think the Saudis have entirely too much time on their hands.
  22. Agit8r
Maybe we can sue "Bogarts" now?
