#2 on page optimization first - even before you launch your site if you can

    It all matters.

Excellent content - is debatable though.

Optimise your page for the keyword you want and include it in every other sentence - but don't overdo the amount of times it is on the page.

Then - get many people to link to that page with the keyword you have chose as the link text. Of course - this is the next to near impossible task as who wants to link to you like that? Never mind just linking to you (not you personally, you understand. Just the figurative 'you' - as in - the SEO'er :-)...

How about keyword rich content instead?

I don't see how excellent content is debateable... if you have the best keyword rich content in the world, if your content blows, who's going to stick around or link to you?
    3. carlgalloway
I would be willing to bet that I could create a keyword rich site with gobbledegook content and use my SEO skills to outrank your excellent content in the SERPs, and probably maintain the lead. The googlebot doesn't actually read our content with understanding, it uses algorithms, and if we're talking SEO then we're effectively talking about getting ranked in the major SEs

I'm sure you could, but I thought he was going for a link building approach? Did I miss something?

Sorry, you're right, I read SEO and pigeonholed myself into thinking about search engines only.

Its too liquified (if thats a word) :-)

Google and other search engines are machines. They want to give you specific answers to your queries. Talking about many topics on one page means that that page is not 100% on topic.

I disagree. You are bringing up bloggers that have been around since the blogging scene became popular. When they started out, they were the first ones doing what they did. Once you get to the status of where they are, you can have crap on your blog (occassionally), and everyone will still love you :), becuase your famous (a lot of their posts are helpful though, even now)

I personally (i.e Me only) believe that excellent content is not the number 1 way to build links because no one will find your excellent content if you do not market it.

I could write decent news, reviews, gossip etc etc and still get loads of people to link to me by just putting myself out there. Talking, interacting, networking.

If you look at 90% of the top Tech blogs you'll see that the content is just ok but they have connections to everyone and hence loads of links.

Its just my opinion though. Please don't be offended by me not agreeing with you.

No offence taken, I completely agree, you only have to look at Shoemoney, Chow, problogger etc. Their blogs are utter rubbish yet people all over the world fall over themselves to link to them
  6. musicreviewzone
Yeah right on with those 3.

An Entrecarder as well? I dropped... :-)
    3. carlgalloway
LOL, I think my Entrecard spot might even be a cheap buy at the moment

As a user and reader, I think content is king. I go back to sites that are useful to me, not to ones that lure me in with BS.

In business school one learns that it's easier to keep a customer than get a new one. Does it apply to website and blog readers?

*edit - I replied in the wrong area
