I'm selling a computer, and an interested party has asked for the serial number and whether or not the computer has any warranty left. It doesn't. Is there any other reason he would need the serial number? Is it at all dangerous to give him the serial number before he purchases the computer? Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but I just feel funny about it.

This depends what you mean by serial number. Do you mean the serial number on the MS windows sticker or the manufacturers (eg HP) serial number?

The manufacturer's serial number for the computer itself (it's a Macbook)

Thats ok, a reasonable request. The serial number would be the easiest way for them to check the specification of the mac book. Sometimes the manufacturer changes the specification or the components used for a particular model. Checking the serial number is a good way to make sure you know what you are buying.
