I have a website that is ranked on page one of Google for a few different keywords I targeted and it's doing pretty well.

This may be a silly question but I was wondering if creating an add on domain for an unrelated site would have any effect on SEO.
I bought the domain name and made a start on it but as it grows larger I started to think, the new site folder is in public-html as a subdomain so would this unrelated content have any impact on the main sites ranking?

I don't think it will but I wanted to see what you think to be sure and avoid making a mistake.

I hope I put that clearly..

i have not understood your question completely.
Search engine can treat sub domain as different site .

having sub domain is better than having sub directory

Thanks umesh, I was worried that search engines may treat it as the same site and that would somehow affect the ranking.

as your new site is on different subject u can have new domain with popular keyword in domain name and that will give you better ranking at search engine for new domain also.
