My site recently crashed under the weight of Digg front page traffic, leading to my web host (ICDSoft.com) putting temporary restrictions on my shared hosting package.

ICDSoft don't have any options to upgrade so I'm looking for a new provider. These companies have been mentioned / recommended:

Media Temple (dedicated virtual server)
Dreamhost (shared / dedicated)
Hostgator
Blue Host

I'm in two minds whether or not to go dedicated. Do you have any experience of these companies?

Using WordPress, it'd be great to have one click upgrades with Fantastico. I currently upgrade manually and whilst not difficult it can be a chore.

Any help at all is much appreciated, and thanks to those of you who have given me your recommendations already. Read my post about web hosting:

    hehe, gotta love Digg traffic

well, i'm on a shared hosting plan, and it's ok so far, but I'll definitely consider going with a dedicated server eventualy. I'm looking at the CPU usage in my control panel right now and it seems to be ok, i'm not worried about bandwidth anyway (350GB/month limit), but 1 Digg day WILL take my blog down that's for sure.

I've heard and read a lot about mediatemple and from what I've read seems it's a really good company, but i never did business with them, they were recommended to me many times (especially after having hosting probs with my current provider)

      Thanks Jonathan,

Media Temple's (dv) service is quite tempting.

Although there's an interesting discussion going on over at Wendy Piersall's eMoms site, recommending an alternative to MT:

If you're a bit of a techie type, I'd recommend rimuhosting's VPS servers. It's a shared virtual server option, basically giving you control over your own Linux server. The support staff is wonderful, the servers are rock solid (unless you do something to muck it up on your own) and I've never had an issue with the service.

Options start at about $20.00 per month, but can be scaled up as needed. take a look www.rimuhosting.com

    David:

I use ServInt's VPS services. The hosting starts at ~$49 I believe. The hosting setup is very good and very stable. Even better (if you don't want to worry about managing a server) is their excellent fully managed service. I have never had a problem they couldn't fix very quickly.

    Jerry, Justin,

Thanks for the tips. I'm looking to spend around $50 per month (more or less) and will take a look at both your suggestions.

I'm not so much of a techie, so perhaps rimuhosting won't be suitable.

    Cheers.

    David:

Sorry. I didn't word things very clearly. The fully managed service is included on all of their VPS products.

visionthishosting.com offer shared hosting. I really can't see you needing dedicated hosting for a blog.
