The fact that he's rich is probably a big selling point with the people of New Orleans, since bribery and corruption has been a huge problem there and it's cost them.
I expect that he also won favor with voters down there when he stepped in and started rebuilding in areas that the city had ignored for nearly a year after Hurricane Katrina.
I think it's likely (though I don't know, of course) that he lacks the everyday knowledge to run a city, but if his intention is to be a leader who will simply put qualified people in the right places to rebuild and keep things clean and honest, it could work. Nothing else has thus far. -
I agree, Violet...but given the choice between a well-intentioned person who couldn't be corrupted and is smart enough to hire people who know what they're doing versus someone whose interest is to line his own pockets while the city rots away, I'd take the first guy any time. A politician at that level makes decisions based on reports from experts and committees and entire agencies who DO have the expertise--they're not dabbling in day-to-day details like someone running a small town or a 50-person business would be.

I don't think the electing of actors has worked out terribly well in the past. Arnie hasn't made California prosperous and Reagan was a disaster for California AND for the nation.
Running a government...or any large enterprise...requires a great deal more than the the ability to act convincingly and hire underlings to do the actual work. -
I agree that Reagan and Arnold haven't worked out all that well, but that comes as no surprise to me, since they're both uber-conservatives who went into office with what I consider a negative agenda. Many who agree with that agenda think Reagan did a bang-up job, and his approach was exactly what I've described: he hired people who shared his philosophy and were well-versed in their particular areas and then listened to them.
I definitely disagree (based on years of involvement in the Democratic party at varying levels and acquaintance with many political candidates and politicians) that success requires more than the smarts and humility to hire the right people and be guided by their expertise.
But what I find most interesting is that you seem to feel that being an actor DISqualifies someone. There are hundreds of people across the country running for various offices they have little or no experience to support at any given time--often, they're elected for that very reason. Is that somehow less offensive because they don't share a former career with two politicians you don't care for?

I think somebody who has the qualifications and the right level of expertise should become mayor, if that is him then so be it.

Yes he should because that city needs someone to be passionate about its survival. Plus the money wouldn't be his incentive. Great idea.

mmm. As someone who is originally from New Orleans I have mixed feelings about this question. I agree with Tiffany that it is entirely possible that Pitt would surround himself with competent people with the skills and expertise to rebuild and manage the city.
BUT. New Orleans is honestly and truly like no other city on earth and despite the time and money Pitt has contribute to New Orleans I have to wonder if he has the understanding of all the (sometimes fractious) factions that make up the city to be able to lead it. OTOH, it does appear to me that the city seems to be in dire need of a fresh approach and new ideas and in that regard Pitt could be a great fit. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. -
It's sad when government wears the people down to "least offensive candidate" or "at least better than that guy" but that's the point I think we're headed towards.
At least Brad Pitt's love life has been scrutinized enough not to have many nasty surprises-- maybe if he's mayor we won't have to hear about it any more(Stay away from Argentina, man!).
