At the moment, my blog is called design.news - not terribly imaginative, so I was thinking of changing it.
The real reason I want to change is because I currently host it on a subdomain of my main site (www.nburmandesign.com/blog) and wanted to move it to it's own URL. It is basically about Graphic Design recommendations, observations and advice.

So I need a name for the new URL!

Any ideas?

Also - will renaming it and using it kill SEO or just help it, since it will have it's own URL?

design is such a person thing - i.e. you - and regardless of SEO or blogging issues - since your domain is your own name, I would change the title to ..

    N. Burman Design

I agree with petlvr. Consistency between the url (ie. your name) and the blog title is a very effective way of creating a unique and recognizable brand for your blog, and that's why SEO experts recommend it. Also note that you can use a short tagline following your blog title to further identify your blog's brand.

      Examples (just suggestions):
      N. Burman Design: news and views on graphic design
      N. Burman Design: cutting edge news, views and graphic branding

Thanks everyone. As you can tell, my regular website (yes, I'm going to run a blog and website; no I won't change my mind!) is nburmandesign.com. I would like my new domain to be the name of the blog. nburmandesignnews.com perhaps? A bit wordy?

I do think your blog name and domain name should match. Not only for SEO reasons but also because you are trying to build a brand (even if it is on a small scale) and so the names have to match up.

So me, your blog isn't really so much about "news." "News" has a time-sensitive aspect to it that I don't get from your posts. (Just my opinion). So, I would stick to "N. Burman Design" or some variation like "Burman Design Sensibilities".

    Good luck.

Makes a lot of sense, Spot.
I got it. I got it!
My initials - and first two letters of the company name - are NB, which in latin, is Nota Bene or to note well, pay attention.

How about 'Nota Bene - Comments on Design'
or Nota Bene - Observations, Remarks and Comments on Graphic Design' ?
