She had twice the legal limit of alcohol in her system, along with marijuana, and she drove in the opposite direction of traffic killing herself, her kids, and others. But does this make her an alcoholic? Her husband says no.In fact, he describes her as the perfect mom. Her work colleagues say she was a wonderful person. What do you say?

I think the fact that she got into a car with her kids while under the influence of that much alcohol and weed makes her a complete and utter idiot. But an alcoholic? Who knows.

Perhaps the question should have been what kind of idiot would drink that much alcohol, be high, and get in a car and drive? And is that the demarcation between an alcoholic and a social drinker-or would most of us simply do what she did with the belief we could make it home?

Alcohol and many kinds of drugs alter one's perceptions. Anyone who is sufficiently under the influence is incapable of making good decisions.

It takes considerably more than a single episode of alcohol-induced idiocy to make an alcoholic.

SweetV- Your point makes me wonder if this was as her husband seemed to suggest a fluke? Could this have been her once in a blue moon, get loaded day? And if so, how many of us would have chosen to drive the SUV with our kids and other kids in the car?

If you are stoned enough, you make bad decisions thinking they are good ones.

SV- It leaves me wondering then, what does that say about an adult/parent that chooses to turn to alcohol/drugs when they know they are responsible for driving so many lives. If one knows they are likely to make bad decisions if they are stoned, why risk it. Why not wait to get home, stay for the night, and get high. Again perhaps her inability to think through any of that is what leads some to say she's an addict.

Again, being stoned alters your perceptions. They may not know they are likely to make bad decisions as their previous bad decisions have not turned out badly, therefore causing them to think their decisions are OK.

Addiction is very different from use, even frequent use. If she did this before...even once...and did not have a bad outcome, then she would have only a positive frame of reference,

There is nothing I have seen so far that would lead me to believe the woman was an alcoholic or addict.
