I have an ad that is outta the way. I don't see the harm. It doesn't bring in a lot of money for me since I have a small personal blog, but it brings in a bit. Better than nothing.

As long as the blog isn't loaded with a bunch of ads, I don't see the problem.

Here's some advice to a newbie. Don't get sucked into believing that you can make big money easily and quickly from advertising on your blog. Use the Discussion searchbox in the forum sidebar and determine just how many bloggers are continually whining about not making enough money from advertising on their blogs. Visit their blogs and discover why that is.

Some people use their blogs as an advertising place. It really depends on what the individual wants to do with the sidebars on their blog. I for one used to sell ad space on my blog. I stopped that and now use the sidebar to advertise different programs.

I wrote a post about this very topic ages ago here
    writersadvice.blogspot.com/2008/02/can-ads-help-or-hinder-your-blog-site.ht...

Meanwhile one of my blogs is dedicated to letting people like yourself advertise free

    see find-writer.blogspot.com/

It only has ads (and some useful info for writers)

It's an experiment of sorts, but i am enjoying the philanthropic element. I have other blogs so doesn't hurt to give freebies.

The blogs I have ZERO ads on aren't public on my blogger profile and you'll never see a link to them anywhere (not that I've posted that is) their purpose is personal and recreational and hence no ads.

Meanwhile there are minimal ads on other sites if they relate to the content as they can be useful.

It depends, I don't stress about it really.

If people don't like the site they don't come back, simple as. Less is always more though. I have way too many ads on some of my blogs but as I don't steal pics from the internet as many do, I need ads to brighten up an otherwise bland text only page.

Should is a loaded term. People like to say what "should", but they rarely account for the many variable involved.

It all depends on what you want from your blog, you blogs purpose, your topic and your readers.

One thing I can tell you for certain in this little space is that you don't make money from a blog by accident.

Id say to start blogging and build up readers then think about the advertising side of things, Dane is right in the sense that you wont make much money from your blog unless you target making money in the correct way and make the blog into more of a business.

I have business websites/blogs and personal, the business ones are making me the money the personal ones dont but in some cases get more visitors, this is because I am not targetting an income from them.

To each its own, what I can say you can try the ads out on your site and if you don't like them, you can remove them. You have to make that choice yourself.

I have adsense on my page but it rarely gets clicked because its kind far at the bottom. I guess it wouldnt hurt though to just have it on your page . You can make a few cents here and there but I wouldnt rely on it as a source of income. Its more like pocket change to me.

As Dane and Mugshot say, it depends on what you're trying to accomplish - but I think it also depends on what stage your site is up to.

If you're in the Inception stage - or even at the start of your Growth stage - then I'd advise not cluttering things up with advertising. It's not going to generate huge amounts of cash anyway, and your first goal is to create a useful site that people like coming to. Ads could very well get in the way.

Once your site is generating a heap of traffic, then test it with ads and see:
    1) whether they have any financial value, and
    2) whether including them impacts on the repeating traffic to your site.

To be honest, if you are not making at least $100-$500 a month in your online efforts, something is wrong.

There are too many FREE, ONLINE RESOURCES (Yes, I said F-R-E-E) for us to use at our discretion. Adsense is for beginners.

I work very hard online and often the return on my investment does not equal the hours I put into content and marketing/promotion. Maybe it will someday?

Let me give all of you some of the best advice you will ever receive about blogging, internet marketing, and/or social marketing:

"You'll never make one dime online until you stop trying to "make money online" and start making friends and building relationships."

I made piles of money before I ever tried to "make friends" with my readers.

There are ways to make money by begging people to leave your blog. It might not be "respectable" or "nice" but it's fact.

@atlantic equity , I took a look at the site you posted and I must say I really liked it. I like when information is straight to the point and people can actually get something done. Great info on there.

Hi. I love ads. As a reader of blogs I like ads if they are not obnoxious, blinking, or take over my screen. I think it is terrific to read a post, be interested in some product associated with the post, and have access to that product right there. Beats the heck out of television ads where I am continually targeted for arthritis meds I don't want or need.

My blog has a split focus - part being funny stories where the ads vary greatly and might not be related to the post, and the other part of the blog related to building a house with cement, where the ads are very related to the post. I've not had any complaints about ads from either side, but I was advised not to spring ads on the audience later. I was told that if I EVER intended to post ads, to do it right from the start. Hope that helps.
