Okay, so all of this Predator and Aliens talk got me thinking about some of my favorite movie scenes.

We talk about this kind of stuff all the time, but now with youtube at our disposal, we can actually share those scenes for discussion.

I'll start off the discussion with one of the more shocking scenes I've ever witnessed for it's time, the gratuitously violent and disturbingly graphic final shootout in "The Wild Bunch" by famed director Sam Peckinpah.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJMxGFco57Y

Warren Oates, Ben Johnson, and William Holden taking turns on the machine gun.....priceless. The disturing image of the small child blowing "Pike" away at the end. Even if you detest violence, this is quite an amazing scene to behold.

I've got plenty more to share, but am curious about what your favorite scenes are? Post them and tell us what struck you about the scene.

Awesome scene. Who doesn't love the Goonies?
    2. crpitt
It just reminds of me being kid and well I still feel like one now

      Goonies never say die!

    How about this one:

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeX5HSBFooI

    Completely terrifying.
    1. kdawg68
Horrifying. The whole basic training portion of the film was Disturbing with a capital "D."

I met R.Lee Ermy in the smoking lounge at the United terminal of LAX. He's exactly like he is in roll call in real life (or he's perfected the persona, one or the other).

He asked me where I lived and when I mentioned Gettysburg his reply was: "Geezus f'n C son, 50,000 of our teenage boys shot each other pieces in your backyard, kinda makes you appreciate the freedoms you've been afforded, doesn't it?"

      My response? "Sir, yes sir!!!!!!!!!"
    2. GlossGreen
Yep, kinda like what I went through, but not as much cussing and no physical abuse. I still remember those days...and cringe.
    3. kdawg68
My uncle got discharged back in the early 70's. He was a witness to some incident where a drill sgt. shot a cigarette through a recruit's hand. Those were the old days though and I've hear it's all changed.
    4. GlossGreen
Yeah, it's nothing like that now. No violence or cursing is allowed. Completely hands off. They still make you feel less than an inch tall every time they open their mouth, which is good enough to get the job done.
  2. legbamel
This one is quite the opposite of terrifying www.youtube.com/watch?v=maI53H4Zbrs but it's one of my favorite movies.

I forgot to answer the "Why?" part of the question. This whole play/movie is about wordplay and surrealism. This just illustrates that on a small scale.
    1. kdawg68
Tim Roth is brilliant. I consider his character in Rob Roy to have been one of the greatest villains ever portrayed.

    This is mine:

    (It's really not mine, it's Claire's)
    1. crpitt
I have never watched that film so tis not mine
    2. kdawg68
My favorite line from that film comes from the barely understandable farmer.

"Over by that creek there I found me a Shoshone arrowhead."

It's just so random and so beautifully placed. The first time I heard it was the definition of a "wtf???" moment.
    3. GlossGreen
I like that movie. Has anyone other then me actually watched past the credits to the scene after them? Interesting scene, raps up a couple of loose ends.
    4. kdawg68
"Yes, I love technology, but not as much as you, you see......always and forever."
    5. offendedblogger
I love Napoleon Dynamite. I have watched past the credits more than once hehe.
    1. GlossGreen
Wyatt Earp was better. Tombstone is just damn overrated. Plus Dennis Quaid is a hell of a lot better as Doc then Val Kilmer was.
    2. kdawg68
See, Michael Biehn....he's like our Kevin Bacon rule for today, as he's connected to the Aliens/Predator (via Aliens)thread that sparked this discussion.

Val made me scared of alcohol in this film. He really looked like he was in full blown liver failure.

Of course, I can't think of Michael Biehn without thinking of "the Rock" when his SEAL team is surrounded and ordered to put down their weapons.

"Sir, I cannot give that order!!!!"

That was the best scene of that film.
    3. GlossGreen
What's even more interesting is the artwork for the game Metal Gear for the NES. Here's a couple of pics that someone put together for a comparison.

    4. kdawg68
Whoa, I never thought of that until you shared, but that's spot-on!

There was some imagery in the Contra series that I remember was eerily similar to the Alien & Predator franchises.

Check out the alien in the center of the image, and then consider that it sure does look like Arnold and "Billy" from Predator on the box as the two main characters.

      www.arthurshall.com/images/custom_images/vg_contra_box_small.jpg
    5. GlossGreen
Yep, that's another one. These games designers and art directors are, of course, big movie fans, so it makes sense to recognize the inspiration for their work. Giger has had a huge influence too. The alien behind the two looks a bit familiar doesn't it?
    6. offendedblogger
@ Gloss, well we already know you have no taste so
    7. GlossGreen
You're just made because Kevin Costner pulls off the Wyatt Earl role better than Kurt Russell.
    8. offendedblogger
      Yeeeeeaaaaaahhhhh.... not.

  4. genopianist54
This thread reminds me of a 'Good Luck Chuck' movie, there are so many hilarious scenes in this movie, i can't name one...

    Gotta have the DVD!

    1. GlossGreen
We have a channel here in Germany that plays movies that are out of theaters, but often, not out on DVD yet. That is one of the movies in rotation for this month. I've seen it, or parts of it, about 20 times already. I think it's pretty funny and has some great scenes.
    2. kdawg68
Yeah, I connect with that Charlie character since he and I share the same problem.
    3. genopianist54
      glossgreen
Wha! 20 times already! oh.. i wish i live in Germany i wanna have that channel too, what is it btw?

      kdawg68
Haha.. what part of Charlie? the hero part or the curse LoL...
    4. kdawg68
Part of the curse. I've always had to fend off waves of babes that were bent on taking advantage of me. Once I was locked in the castle Anthrax by a bevy of virgin beauties who insisted upon spanking me. Thankfully, Lancelot arrived just in time to save me from the peril, which was too perilous to face. (gratuitous Monthy Python reference)

  5. Unfettered
I don't know about scenes, but here's a movie I never want to see!

Is that one of those fish themed movies? Prawn with the wind? I can only imagine the plot development.

Are amphibians fare game since they spend time in the water? Perhaps "Frogdor: The Pondinator"

      I love that part!
    2. crpitt
      Love that bit too!
    3. GlossGreen
I love that movie. Jennifer Connelly's first.
    1. crpitt
I absolutely love this bit and in fact the whole film
    2. GlossGreen
Another one of my favorites. It's part chick flick, part guy movie. All entertaining.
    3. kdawg68
One of my favorite movies of all time. Anything with Andre the Giant playing the role of "giant" is can't miss in my opinion.

My favorite scene is when the princess tells her elderly father law that she's going to kill herself after the wedding and he replies "won't that be nice?"
    4. crpitt
I am reading the book at the moment, its cool.
    5. GlossGreen
I actually have read the book for this. I liked it. Haven't read it in a few years though. I like the fact that the book stated that it was the "good parts version" with all the boring stuff taken out.
    6. legbamel
I was so disappointed with the Zoo of Death that I've decided to like the movie better. That's exceedingly rare for me. It's the exception that proves that rule that the book is always better.
  7. GlossGreen
I just finished watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind with my daughter. Now we're both singing those damn 5 notes again and again trying to get it right. Great movie though.
    1. kdawg68
I've mentioned in a certain other threat that shall remain nameless that I've made mountains out of baking soda instead of mashed tots.
    2. GlossGreen
Who hasn't wanted to do that?
  8. kdawg68
Another of my all-time favorites. It's another that is filled with violence, but in a much more artistic (as ridiculous as that sounds) fashion.

It's the final attack on the beseiged B Company, 2/24th at Rorke's Drift in the film Zulu. The zulu war chants are 100% authentic and bone chilling. The Brits/Welsh replying with fictitious versus of "Men of Harlech." The Zulu replying by becoming more ferocious and then charging. The crash of Martini Henry rifle fire into the waves of Zulu. The brits in their ridiculously bright red uniforms. The zulu war machine looking like something from another time. It's jaw dropping stuff. Filmed in the late 1960's, I think this rivals any scene in any "war movie" ever made. Sheer filmaking brilliance. Imagine how difficult to coordinate this must have been.

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=1csr0dxalpI

The film marked the debut of Michael Caine as the obnoxious Lt. Bromhead. Narration was by Richard Burton. A freakin' classic that seldom gets the recognition it deserves (aka a complete surround sound remastering). The film featured harrowing close-quarters combat over two-thirds of it's duration.

The Zulu performances steal the show though. The actual Zulu people portraying their warrior ancestors are incredibly effective. The sound effects from the initial contact scenes were used in the Roman/Visigoth (or were they Gauls? I can't remember) battle that opened the film Gladiator (if you listen carefully to the background you can hear the Zulu chants that have always sounded something like "move quietly" to me.
    1. GlossGreen
The last time I saw that movie I was a kid. Very powerful movie, a definite must watch.
  9. legbamel
Okay, this one is very much not for the kiddies. It contains much exceedingly naughty language, is all about sexual references, and contains a disturbing castration bit. Shockingly enough, it's Gary Oldman again. I love that guy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnFfMTnz_NU if you dare.
    1. GlossGreen
OK, so what the hell was that! Never even heard of that one before. I'm scarred for life. Thanks a lot legbamel.
    2. legbamel
That was Interstate 60. There is a lot of wrongness in that movie. Almost all of it comes from Gary Oldman.
    3. kdawg68
Castration humor? A genre I have not encountered before. Apparently I need to be more open to picking up hitchikers in daisy dukes though.
    1. GlossGreen
An absolute classic. Great action, interesting scifi aspects. Horrible acting, but that's OK. This is the movie that made Arnie a star.
    2. kdawg68
Brilliant film, and of course we get Bill Paxton (he's the bluehaired punk in the opening of the film), Michael Biehn (Kyle), and even Lance Henrickson to continue the six degrees of Aliens theme from earlier in the day.

    Kevin Kline dancing.

I'd never seen that before. That's hysterical! I loved K.Kline in "A Fish Called Wanda."

I saw that movie when I was 12 or 13 and thought is was pretty funny I suggest it if you haven't seen it.

This scene makes me laugh every time I see it.

I busted out an impression of Baldwin's line in that scene (and his dramatic delivery) at a party once and no one in the room got the reference. On the plus side they thought I was a raging psycho, which can be deeply entertaining.
  12. legbamel
As reparations for the last one, try this different side-of-the-road scene. I promise, no one talks about losing a body part. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1juqa7Njj7w&feature=related
    1. kdawg68
Have you combed my psyche for fears? First castration and now spiders? I can only hope the Goddess Bunny does house calls!

The final race scene (400 metres) in Chariots of Fire. The climax of that film is so uplifting for me.
    1. kdawg68
Man, I just realized the theme song to Chariots of Fire would make a great backdrop to some horse racing highlights in slow motion!
    1. kdawg68
One of the most classic scenes ever filmed. I read that while filming this scene over and over again the cast became irate at each other. Apparently there was a now deleted scene that had "Dennis" eating filth. I hear they almost came to blows while filming.

      Definitely one of my favorites.
    2. LGramlich
Wow...I never knew that. Thanks for the info!

when anthony kiedis is hiding behind a door with his gun pointing down and shoots his own foot off

    he shoulda got an oscar!
    1. kdawg68
Ha! That winner of a film featured Kiedis, Flea, Keanu, Swayze, and nut-job Gary Busey.

What a proverbial "cast of characters."

I can't find the movie clip that I wanted to post (When I do I will post it) but I really did enjoy this:

Haven't seen that one yet. Considering the Goddess Bunny's effect on you, I'm surprised the masked thing in V for Vendetta doesn't freak you out.
