I self host my WP template and am wondering about adding a WP plugin that will create and generate a sitemap to Google. I currently do not have a sitemap submitted to Google. I found an old BC thread that mentioned this plugin
wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/

Questions -- Does anyone use this plugin? Do I need a sitemap submitted to Goggle? Is this a useful plugin to create a WP sitemap?

Your sitemap is generated by WordPress and is auto-submitted to all search engines by WordPress

If you have a free hosted wordpress.com blog that's true.

You definitely need a sitemap for your wordpress blog. Google sitemap generator is a very good plugin.

You will need a sitemap when submitting to google and without a sitemap it's not so helpful. Or easy expl. is Help Search Engine (Google) to help you more.

Cindy .. in your plugins section in the dashboard, "Add New" and search for "Google XML Sitemaps" .. install, and activate.

Generally, it's plug and play although you should build the sitemap first time off.

Afterwords, you should go to www.google.com/webmasters/ and add your sitemap - and verify it. I just create a blank text file and rename it the name that google suggests (vs option to add to header etc) and drop it in the root directory - then verify. It sounds strange - but, evident one you are there on the site.

If you self-host your blog on your own domain, there is no "auto-submittal". Use the plugin and add the sitemap to Google Webmaster tools. Google will then assist you in debugging site errors and periodically check your site for updates.

You can also add the sitemap to other services (like Bing, Ask.com, etc) and ping them whenever you publish a new post.

    submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http%3A//www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xml
    www.bing.com/webmaster/ping.aspx?siteMap=http://www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xm...

Just go to the Writing Settings under "Update Services" in the Wordpress dashboard and enter the URLs above, and change the URL for the sitemap to the one the plugin will generate. You can ping Yahoo with your sitemap as well (write back if you want the URL).

lol ... you guys have covered it all

Yes, I do agree that you need both the sitemap and the plugin Cindy. Everyone running a self hosted wordpress blog needs one.
No, it's not hard to configure at all.
Yes, you do have to submit a sitemap to Google through your webmasters account.

      (1) Build your Site Map online here www.xml-sitemaps.com/
Submit the sitemap to Google through your webmasters account.

      (2) Get the plugin - Google XML Sitemaps Version 3.1.4
This plugin will generate a sitemaps.org compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search (Bing) and YAHOO.
