I am trying to participate in the Photo Hunters (which I love, by the way) and it is so frustrating to wait for some blogs to load and I have a fast internet connection.

I know my own loads slow at times and I often wonder as it seems as if one thing is hanging it up...like a widget, but which one. I try to choose carefully what to leave up and what to remove and have made lots of changes, but still have trouble giving up some things.

Does anyone else hate slow loading pages and what is causing them?

I know too much graphics...but it is almost like if I am on wordpress and have the settings saved for my log-in, that that alone hangs it up while it is trying to access my saved settings.

....me...frustrated at the moment.

I hate slow loading pages too, that's why I always consider dial-up users when designing my blog or making a post.

It depends on how much content you have on your blog and the hardware specs of your Web server. Databases are usually the cause for slow load times and if you have a lot of content plus a lot of plug-ins, your Web server will surely have a hard time processing those altogether.

The number one cause of slow loads are external JavaScript calls. Widgets that rely on JavaScript hang all the time. I removed all JavaScript widgets from my sidebar yesterday and now nothing hangs.

I like the widgets, and replaced some with non-JavaScript versions, but lost a few. I don't want to sacrifice speed for eye candy.

I concur. Java scripts calls is the no. 1 killer to killing your blog. Hmm.. I think I will write an article on that. Thanks for the inspiration.

Pages must be visible within the first few seconds. If it isn“t visible for a full 30 seconds, I leave the site.

I came across a site the other day. My PC stuck in an endless looping. What was wrong? Well, maybe because of the background music.

If you use the most up to date technology to impress your visitors it might have the opposite effect. It may add an unacceptable download time to the page. For instance "Macromedia Flash" technology often creates longer loading times. Your visitors' browsers may not support the new technology. They may be required to download plug-ins, re-start their computer or even have to upgrade their system.

This is a major reason why I press the back button on my browser.

If anyone is inclined to load up my front page at www.untwistedvortex.com/ and tell me if it seems fast or slow, I would appreciate the feedback. I've done everything I can short of removing anything external to make it as fast as it can be.

The only thing that I can think of that might make it slow is network congestion of some sort, but I could be wrong.

I'd be happy to do the same for anyone else who asks.

Oops. It might be slower than usual. I got stumbled again.

Your page loaded fast. I just dumped a bunch of stuff from my right column. Check mine please: www.hotcongas.com

The page loads fast. Was it slow before?

No, it wasn't necessarily slow except for a few times when widgets got hung up. But, I decided recently to reduce a lot of the "clutter" (ncluding the widgets) in the right column. Just wanted to see how the page loaded for others. Thanks for checking it.

maybe you guys can see whether my site loads fast for you. it was designed for dialup users, i minimize using images, and even if i do use some, i lessen the resolution a little bit.

I checked and the only thing that slows it down are the JavaScript widgets such as MyBlogLog and here. I wish BlogCatalog could create non-Javascript versions of the recent visitors and neighborhood widgets, similar to what MyBlogLog has done. You can get their non-JavaScript code by getting the code for WordPress hosted sites.

I also checked it and I have the same observation as RTCunningham. Those widgets are becoming a fad and every blog I visit seems to have them. Anyway, your content loads fairly.

With exception, unless if the purpose of the website is to showcase a graphic design firm or tool, there is no reason to use the latest and greatest, whether Flash, Shockwave, embedded sound, etc.
