There's an article in the new york times that lists ways in which some colleges are saving money. One college has decided to eliminate free HBO and ESPN. Others have chosen to cut down on staff and instead hire students to take on professional roles for the "experience". Do you think this is a smart save or is the recession panic getting out of hand?

Those poor kids won't have free HBO?

    That's a complete tragedy!!

    And a travesty!!

They should have cut the arts and sciences first.

    I would die without HBO

Recession panic that may hopefully turn into a smart save.

good move dropping free cable crap. That money going to the school, those many dollars coming from family, students, the students future debt - should not be wasted on cable.

If that's problem then the student should drop out and get their own cable in their apartment.

They should switch off their hall/room lights when the colleges are done for the day. Switch off the damned air conditioning too. And invest in solar energy panels. And cut the salaries of the staff by a small percentage. And buy some energy saving products to help them save electricity in the long run.

The staff cutting/intern hiring move is especially smart because the company saves money while keeping a similar workforce. The only problem is that interns are inexperienced and the quality of work will go down, but it is a great cost cutting move.

People should realize that the only way to make this crisis go away is to spend money, not to massively take it out of the bank and stuff it in your pillow. If you have the financial option to outsource something (painting, home improvement, whatever) you should do it. The more money people spend the faster we can leave this behind us.

I totally agree with you! People have remained shell shocked by this recession and while it is evident I think there is a lot of fluff to it. People have become more scared of the problem as opposed to making the right decisions to help aid it. I'm not encouraging wild spending but spending smart and not reverting to couches as are bank.

Well, investment is all gone and saving is going down to the bottom with rising expenses...
