This might sound like a really dumb question, but what the heck do they get out of it?

The URLs ~all 15 of them~ didn't even look valid, although I was d*mned if I was gonna click on them though.

So why do they bother?

some people are stupid enough to click through

cuz they're bored and they think it's fun?

Yeah, but it was just random letters with a weird random-lettered link.
I didn't even approve it, so it never got seen by anyone else!

~And to think that I was thinking this morning of enabling auto~approval of comments. I DONT THINK SO!

Do you have a wordpress blog? If you do, activate akismet, it should catch this type of spam and you'll never need to deal with it

Thanks matt, I do. I've just never had to deal with it.

~I kinda got a kick out of the novelty.

      I've been discovered!

      Willdo with the askimet, thanks.

So did I, I was just wondering if anyone knew *why* the spammers even bother?

I can't see the payoff for them?

Imagine that they get to post a million links, and just 10% click them.
It is the same with spam e-mails. Some people react to them, and that is why it continues. Just send out massive cheap spam, and eventually somebody will be stupid enough to give you revenue.

But the urls were just random letters, like saklfjaseox.com

      What's that about?

      Or am I having a brain~drain moment?

    Spambots, most likely lol.
    1. janeycatte
      Yeah, they'd have to be!

    Would you like some more.

The ones that spam me would probably also be inspired by your blog

      You're so kind

    Up-load Askemit to block spammers.
  7. cooper
Akismet takes all mine, and "bad behaviour" blocks a lot of them, but they do it in case you have nofollow for links i think.

I've enabled Askimet, and the comments have stopped (at least so far).

I must be having a brain drain though, because the I still can't see why anyone would make the effort.

    Oh well, thanks all!

Ya = I think a sign of getting your blogs name out there is all this spam. I am good for 20 a day now. I do not kow if that is a big deal, but I know the issue is among some of the spam I actually find comments. So I actually have to go through them.
    1. janeycatte
      I think so too, Ben.

Now, does anyone know if I can go through the comments marked as spam by askimet?
    2. BennyGreenberg
YA - You can I have to do it every day
    3. janeycatte
Thanks Ben. I'm off to investigate
    4. janeycatte
Hey Ben, I figured it out. Thanks for all the help

I get it on my blog and I get it on the message board I run. I can usually see where it is a bot that set up the account or the comment. They do it because it takes a very small amount of work can net them a fair number of hits on their site.

Their site is named what it is because it is cheap and easy to buy those domains (there is no demand for them). They don't care about SEO, they just want cheap domains to set up their spam landing pages. The domains will typically be a page with ads (porn, viagra knockoffs, etc.).
    1. janeycatte
Ahhh... Now I get it. I just thought the urls were made up gobbledegook!

Thanks baldeagle, I can sleep at night now I know what's going on.
