Discussions

Sort of a hit and run here as I won't be able to post much over the next few days/weeks - but i've missed starting random discussions, so let's have it with some Olympic randomness.

Here are some random observations. Discuss, debate, ridicule, or agree.

1. Michael Phelps is god. I now sacrifice chickens to his honor - well, to a crude paper meche replica of his likeness. I call it "Mikey." Seriously though, why the hell would anyone talk trash to that guy to fire him up? And why can't I key him on top of a trifecta when he races?????

2. Misty May Traenor (U.S. women's beach volleyball) is in love with me - she just doesn't realize it yet.

3. Ditto for Chinese beach volleyball babe Xue Chen. She just hasn't found a way to express her love for me as she doesn't speak English.

4. I'm mad as hell that I don't get to see Misty vs. Xue today in the gold medal game.

5. I have an unhealthy obsession with women's beach volleyball now (obviously).

6. Nastia Lukin should've won gold on the uneven bars.

7. Shawn Johnson or Nastia should've won gold on that jump thing (forgive me, I don't know gymnastics) where the Chinese girl fell. Heck, the Chinese got so many "WTF?" scores to their benefit while our gals got screwed.

8. Chinese gymnist Cheng Fei looks like Dr. Zhayus from Planet of the Apes. There's no way in hell half of those Chinese female gymnists were a day over 12.

9. I don't think Chris Collinsworth, former Cincinatti Bengals WR, is quite the right guy for the job to be discussing fencing matches and bicycle races - but at least he isn't Bob Costas.

10. I still can't believe I live in a world where trampoline, table tennis (ping pong), and handball are sports countries can win gold medals in, yet baseball is on it's way out and American Football is no where on the radar. I know - next let's add laser tag! Or Pokemon! Or Magic-the Gathering!!!

wow.. I dont think I have turned the tv on once to watch it..
    1. kdawg68
it's actually been quite good, I must say....not the coverage so much as the games themselves.

Phelps was amazing. Misty May is amazing, and Xue Chen needs to become my love goddess - it's really that simple.
  2. ThriftShopRomantic
I think I appreciate your colorful sum up more than anything.

How about Olympic Dodgeball? It'd be all over "the Ocho."
    1. kdawg68
do they have that? Maybe that's what I was seeing and thought it was handball? No, I quite remember a goalie being involved....like some retarded blend of basketball and soccer.
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
Lookit, he's taking me all seriously... Kdawg, Kdawg... I don't think there's Olympic dodgeball, I was just giving you a difficult time. You know-- like normal.
    3. kdawg68
Are you certain? I think Bahrain may have medalled in that!
    4. lulubelleb
How about Musical Chairs or Simon Says (aka Mother May I)?

      ;^D
  3. Theresa111
I route for each of them. The games are exciting.
    1. kdawg68
it's been years since I've watched this much, but now I don't know what I'll do when Shawn John, Nastia, Phelpsie, Xue, and Dr. Zayus are out of my life?
    2. Theresa111
      Fantasize?
    3. kdawg68
I just can't fathom having to wait 4 years to see Xue Chen again. She can't just come into my life, set a few volleyball plays up for her partner while prancing around in a bikini, and then leave? What kind of person does that?
  4. RTBjr73
As far as Nastia Lukin on the uneven bars, I am going to have to agree with Mr. Karoyli...judging was incompetant!!

A judge from New Zealand and Australia? What is the heck do they know? "Can't have a judge on the panel that has an athlete from the same country. BS!!!!
Give me judges from Russia, Germany, Belarus, USA, China...these countries have judges that know how to judge on the highest level of this sport!!!

As far as Chris Collinsworth covering fencing matches and bicycle races? Does it really matter?

As far as American Football? Nah, never will make it into Olmpic sports, and I hope not. Pro teams would not allow their players to play ( I guarantee it.), and college won't allow it, because they can't make money...I mean...ummm...that is just too much for a young man to handle when he needs to make money...(dammit)...when he needs to represent his school as a student athlete.
    1. kdawg68
I so agree - wasn't watching Bella great? He's so animated - actually, the way he is with gymnastics, that's what watching sports I care about with me is like. Lots of screaming, lots of pounding - not that I get angry, I just get pumped up when things go right. I'm more of a silent pouter when things go wrong.
    2. RTBjr73
Well, at least the two little ones for China can take their gold medals back to school with them...you know, for show and tell, right before recess. ;-)
    3. kdawg68
tell me you're with me on the Cheng Fei/Dr.Zaius thing?

      AND

  5. legbamel
I had to shut off the TV after the uneven bars and didn't even watch the rest of the gymnastics finals. That was so wrong. And the vault the day before was just as bad. You have to feel so bad for the girls who get robbed blatantly and publicly that way. They absolutely have to be good sports about it but you know inside they're probably dying to scream at someone.

I was also miffed that they left the women's pole vault when only two competitors were still competing to go to men's indoor volleyball. C'mon, at least tell me who won!

Fencing matches are so hard to follow that I don't think it matters who announces them. You'll always be thinking, "She jabbed her when?" and, "Why did he get the point for the hit?"
    1. kdawg68
Heart breaking - totally. But I thought Shawn in particular was amazing as she never let it phase her. Nastia's the tougher looking one, but Shawn might be tougher for real. She's such a good person to represent us. I loves her to death. So glad she finally got gold on the balance beam. That moment in the team finals when she had Mary Lou Retton standing up cheering for her - that was special.
    2. clioandme
I was miffed about the pole vault coverage too. I wish I could say it surprised me.
    3. kdawg68
Here's what got me though - hadn't that already been decided earlier in the day? I think when we're watching at prime time, it's 12 hours different over there, right (ahead)? I keep getting so confused with that. I know that several events I was getting into I looked online and saw the results had happened hours ago.

Oh well...wasn't the gold to the Russian girl in that? The one who could get like 16 feet in the air without breaking a sweat?
    4. legbamel
Yup - it had already been decided, the Russian woman had won, and set a new world record, too. Sure wish I could have seen it. [rolls eyes]
    5. kdawg68
So I'm guessing tonight we'll get the replays of the Jamaican dude that's been crushing track and field. The hot-dog guy. He can sure run, but I don't really like him. He glares back at other racers trying to show them up and stuff like that - there shouldn't be any place for such things in the Olympics.

But Jamaica - wow - they've burst onto the scene this year and are a force to be reckoned with on the track.

Edit: And, we do get Misty May against the "other Chinese team" tonight (though not the one with Xou Chen, more's my pitty).
  6. Houseonahill
I have been watching as well! I have enjoyed all of the events, they have really been good...but what the hay with the canoe races and their coaches cycling down the way??? I end up watching them instead...go figure...
    1. kdawg68
is that who the guys on bikes are? This whole time I've been asking people who the heck the maniacs on the bikes keeping up with the boats were. I never would've figured that out.
  7. Houseonahill
Can't believe you haven't nominated a ninja/event to the Olympics Committee!!
    1. kdawg68
See, I blame Xue Chen for this omission.

  8. RTBjr73
I thought Dara Torres was AWESOME!!! For people my age an above, I am sure I speak for everyone when I think that seeing an adult old enough to be some of the competitor's mom, come in and kick some major butt in the swimming events was pretty special to watch.
(Plus, it IS nice to see a good looking ADULT WOMAN in a bathing suit, and not worry about mistakenly checking out a teenager...LOL)

    POWER TO THE ADULTS!!!
    1. kdawg68
Plus, she's so awesome that she held up a race so that another swimmer could fix their swimsuit, and she's given blood and tissue samples to be frozen so they can be tested years from now as new technologies are unleashed - so she can prove she's all natural.

I hope she comes back at 45 next time around. She swam good enough for gold.
  9. clioandme
The Chinese female gymnasts are just the ultimate extreme of a trend also evident in the US. Athletes in this sport are expected to be abnormally tiny, and so they're also young, just not as obscenely young as the Chinese. Here's a thought: How about making it a women's sport again?
    1. kdawg68
      I second that motion!
  10. ChicaX
I've been watching it like a hawk, I was standing and applauding when that lil Shawn finally got a gold last night even!
    1. kdawg68
She's so lovable, isn't she? You just have to cheer for her. I wanted her to beat Nastia so bad for individual gold.
    2. ChicaX
I think it's her funny little eyebrow thing that hooked me.
    3. kdawg68
and the smile - she's just always smiling. Seems like the kind of kid that would light up anyone's life she walked into. She should get some endorsements as she's got a very marketable face.
  11. acousticguitarist
    Not enough horses
    1. kdawg68
They do have Equestrian, and I actually did watch quite a bit of it. I've got a friend over on facebook who is very into the riding disciplines and it caused me to take a renewed interest. Plus, I'll watch anything with horses. Cowboy movies, equestrian events, horse races - it doesn't matter.
  12. acousticguitarist
I love the handball, we don't have it here (well it's not popular),

But they need to restructure it so there is midfield activity
    1. kdawg68
It probably is a cool sport to play. Just looks funny to the foreign eye.

Okay, so maybe you can educate me on this - do they always get a free shot at the end of the game? Twice I've watched on the Oxygen network here (don't ask - they're an NBC affiliate) and twice at the end of the game, for no apparent reason, one team gets what looks like a penalty shot on the other teams goal - only it looks impossible to do anything with the shot as the entire other team stands right in front of you blocking (not to mention the goalie). What's up with that? I'm sure I'm missing something.
  13. kdawg68
Okay, so you guys probably already talked about this when it happened - but Phelps coming back in that last half stroke in the butterfly -

    Are you kidding me?

One of the most amazing moments in all of sports that I've ever seen. The defining moment of the Olympics as far as I'm concerned, although I'm probably looking through red/white/blue goggles and not giving enough credit to other accomplishments....I readily admit that.
    1. aningeniousname
Phelps is amazing but the moment of the whole Olympics is surely Bolt strolling the 100m race.(with his shoe laces undone!)
I don't usually enjoy the games because we always do crap, but bloody hell GB are third!!!! Above the Russians!
    2. kdawg68
That's the Jamaican guy - I actually can't stand him. Seems unsportsmanlike to me. Didn't care for the way he taunted runners in the qualifying heats by looking back at them to show them up. I was actually hoping he'd fall down or something today - but yes, he is mind blowingly fast on the track.

Speaking of the world records - is it just me or is every time race event whether on water or track generating record times? If this keeps up, how fast might people (well, cream of the crop athletes at least) be in 20 years?

As much as I dislike him thus far, that Bolt dude looks like he could break the sound barrier if he wanted to.
    3. aningeniousname
They were saying on the commentary that swimming records were being broken because the Beijing pool was a "very fast" pool, what makes one pool faster than another I don't know.

If Bolt was American you'd be praising him for his all American attitude.
    4. kdawg68
I heard folks mention that the pool was deeper and that had something to do with it? Who knows. It's probably a combination of equipment, training, and rhinceros testosterone injections.
    5. legbamel
The pool is nine feet deep instead of six and ten lanes wide instead of 8. I don't really understand how the depth helps, but apparently the extra width means a somewhat reduced backwash from the massive amounts of water that the swimmers are moving.
  14. keyster94
I must say, you summed it up perfectly (except that I don't have the obsession with the volleyball chics. Though I do enjoy watching it, I doubt it's for the same reasons!)

The vault thing pissed me off too! She FELL!!!!

And Michael Phelps is incredible. I find it amusing that people trash talk him before a meet knowing he says it fires him up! Gluttons for punishment...
    1. kdawg68
Amen - usually I wouldn't make a human/ape reference, but that whole vault thing with Cheng Fei made me say "hell with it" and do the Dr. Zaius thing. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought she'd been beaten with the ugly stick.
  15. Autorotate
It's awesome China sent its Jr. Olympics team to compete this year in gymnastics.
    1. kdawg68
In gymnastics yes, they seem to have pushed the age envelope.

But overall - wow, China's really turned it up in just about every sport. They didn't used to send winning swimmers and track and field guys out, and I know their track star got hurt, but still - you can tell they're going to compete for years to come in just about everything.

Their divers were unbelievable, and for all the controversy over their women's gymnastics team, their men were the definition of gold medal winners. No one else was even close.
  16. rmaxwell142
Actually, I'm surprised mixed martial arts hasn't been introduced as a new Olympic sport! Or miniature golf! LOL
    1. Autorotate
      We got Tiger baby!
  17. kdawg68
Misty May and Kerry Walsh - woo hooo!!!! We needed that gold here in the States. I thought they might be up against it.
  18. sdk1988
    6. Nastia Lukin should've won gold on the uneven bars.

She still may, they are investigating the age of the Gold Medal Winner - but it doesn't take away the heartbreak that Nastia suffered in those moments..
    1. kdawg68
Yup - looks like China could lose up to 5 medals total.
  19. harleyblues
yeah Dawg I have some thoughts on this years games so far...my high lights

    1. I think China cheated in some of the gymnastic events..some golds were stolen ...you know it! I don't believe em chinese girls are all the age of 16.. with was that of spitting hairs in a tie?? they should have given them both gold..

    2. USA kicked ass against China in pre-lim game it was just brillant, all the theatrics you know what I'm talkin about .. Yao Min and team didn't stand a chance.. USA played with finesse, didn't loose their cool with all the fouls by china....the boys rawked it!Poetry in motion..

    3. the mens 200- swim relay race were the Americans won the gold!! damn that was a nail bitter.

4, what's with Michael Phelps anyways is it just me or is he a tad arrogant? sheeesh your team-mates helped ya to win the 8!

    5. the womens 26.? marathon man what strength I admire all them that finished I was in awe watchin...it gave me chills were does all that endurance come from?

    6. give me a break your gonna get a freakin gold medal for Bat mitton (sp) ( played it as a kid.) but come now and what DID take the cake was that stupid trampoline jumpin thing? WTF was that about? and you can win a medal for that .. but they want to oust softball?

    6. the womens bike thingy in the rain now that is sheer talent without breaking your neck.

    7. The coolness of Walter Dix.. man the guy is sawed-off but he can run and when interviewed he was just all business too cool~ lol

    8. Raj ? winning a medal in gymnastics at the games and they said he couuldn't do it .. showed them..

    9. Volley-ball damnit to all hell I didn't get to see the girls bring it to victory it was on too late last night..

    10. one of the annoucers for gymnastics is annoying stating negative comentary on all competing .. the younger guy- will you just shut up already!!

    11. womens soccer USA agianst Canada qualif..

    13. womens fencing but they don't call it that - I wanna see a duel dangit... not 20 secs of trying to swipe your partner then screaming every single time.. annnyoinggg... lol

    14. Miss Jim McCay
  20. harleyblues
    15. I cant edit my post Im proud of Great Britan for their wins..

    16. I think Jamaica throw a voo-doo mojo against USA in track & field
  21. harleyblues
Dang I wanted the Dawg to see my response lol
    hb~
    1. kdawg68
Good stuff harley! I'm right with you on all of those! I liked Walter Dix as well. Dude is ripped - he should take that track speed to the football field. He's built like a power running back.

I'm just going through some SERIOUS Misty May/Xue Chen withdrawal at the moment. Love Misty's play and personality and Xue - well, I know she's "the enemy" being on team China and all, but good lord she's one of the most naturally beautiful women I've ever seen, period.

      Great stuff, harleyblues!
  22. kdawg68
So, I hardly ever go off-topic (i.e., non horse racing related) over on the blog, but this thread and my Olympic obsession inspired me to do just that last night.

    theaspiringhorseplayer.com/2008/08/21/olympic-randomness/

It's basically the same stuff you saw here, with a few slight changes - and PICTURES!

As an interesting side note: I decided to see what would happen if I used the tag "chinese hottie xue chen" - and wham - 75 hits so far today on that tag alone. Looks like I'm not the only one around with a Xue Chen obsession.
    1. aningeniousname
      Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Xue Chen mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
    2. polybore
Phew just imagine if she were a filly kdawg68 would definitely go a bit coltish.
    3. kdawg68
I'm absolutely smitten with her. Funny thing is, she was beating an American team when I first caught glimpse of her. But my god - in the Beijing rain, her tan skin and that lovely bikini.

I'm totally going to follow women's beach volleyball now just so I can check her out again.

LOVE her. Just absolutely love her.
    4. aningeniousname
I have written her a love poem....well its more of an ode:

Xue chen ohhhhhhhhh thouest of golden skin,
      Do you sometimes think of.....me..n,
When thou doth doest thouest beachy volleyballeth stuff
I doest thinketh of thou ..nakedth
    5. kdawg68
      Bravo!!!!

She makes me happy to be a man. I simply can't wait 4 more years for her.
