Everybody makes jokes about southerners saying Howdy!

How do people greet one another in your location?

Howdy from NYC, I love it.. I feel like I'm at my cousins place down in Good Ol' South Carolina..!

To be honest I have never actually heard a southerner in person say Howdy. In my area we say either "Hi", "Hey", "what up douh", "Hello"

You still hear "Howdy Y'all!" from time to time but more often I hear "Hey" or "Hey Y'all".

We were out working in the flower bed around the mailbox one spring and our new, across-the-street neighbors that had moved in from Minnesota pulled out of their driveway in their mini-van and rolled down the window and yelled "HOWWWW-DEEEEE NEIGHBOR!" in such a way that left no doubt they'd never said HOWDY before in their life! We just waved and said Howdy! right back (even though we don't use that particular greeting every day); trying to seem neighborly and all.

I don't know to this day if they were being condescending or truly trying to fit in. But it was a really hilarious ice-breaker for sure!

    4. BennyGreenberg
Ya - I am kinda confused about it too...

Maybe it was those years playing Ball In Johnson City Tennessee?

  10. fearless21

  11. webmoney

I say "hey" or "hello" or "what do you want this time"

but that last one's reserved for my ex husband
  13. Anok
We either say say - in a low mumbled and cold tone of voice "hey" with the ever present half head nod while passing someone by, or, we say "hey" with a friendly tone to people we already know.

Otherwise, you will get the New England "f*ck off".
    1. melindaville
lol--and that really is the truth, Anok. ha ha ha.
    2. Anok
      Isn't it though?

Unless yo want something from someone, in which case you use either "hey" or "yo" in a "hey I'm talkin' to you" kind of tone

Im from TX and we just say Hi, Hey, or Hello....Howdy? never hear that.
    1. msbaby
From Texas and say Hi, Hey or Hello? Actually I heard a song the other day that indicated that the in greeting for some from the great state of TX was "S---W YOU! We're from Texas!"

No joke, that's a real song! Kind of catchy one at that, but I don't let the kids hear!
    2. bgbranch
Hmm, I had never heard of that but I just googled it. Its somewhat of a knock to southern hospitality. Ya know, does exactly scream kindness.

In Santa Ana, they say, "Eh, amiga! Quieres..." (you get the picture).
    1. msbaby
Could you translate for the monolingual among us?
    2. LynneaUrania
It's, "Hey, girlie-friend, wanna ride?" (implicitly not just in a car)
    3. msbaby
That makes "Howdy" sound not only provincial but very boring and mundane, huh?
  16. bloggergirll

  17. drjay1966
