I have a post on my ADHD blog called "ADHD Myths and Other Crap" and someone got really bent out of shape. They typed in a really long comment with lots of name calling and accusations directed toward me and my own parents! Of course, they signed it "anonymous."

After I calmed down and was eventually amused by the fact that I got someone's knickers in a twist, I typed in a response.

If you are interested in reading about what an ass and idiot I am, come visit!

ignore it. they are to chicken to sign there name.
    1. busylizzy
I think it's pretty funny. My theory is that they misread the title. I think they thought my post was about truths.
  2. thegnr
    @busylizzy
why did you post under shameless blog promotion?
I think a little scandal is good for promotion but if it
looks staged no one will bite.

ps Im not saying that is the case here
    1. busylizzy
I wanted to share the excitement with everyone but I am talking about my blog and inviting people to take a peek - that's why I put this thread in the SHAMELESS catagory.

Maybe BC should create a new catagory - for people who do have shame. LOL!

I think a direct link is in order here adhdandmore.blogspot.com/2009/02/adhd-myths-and-other-nonsense.html

That would also put this in Shameless blog promotion. She got really riled up.
    1. busylizzy
Shirley - are you pimping me? LOL!
    2. Shiley
I was looking for it. When I found it had to go to the second page. My first thought was what is she talking about. Lol!
    3. busylizzy
Shirley - there's an index in the margin.
    4. Shiley
Ahhh... yes but this is one day going to be a zombie post and like all zombies they come out of the ground eventually.

I think because she knows the truths about ADHD, she looked at your title from a different perspective. As if you were "dispelling myths" with the things you wrote.

Maybe a way to head off further misunderstanding like this would be to have, say, a two sentence intro before you get into the points. Like "ADHD and ADD is greatly misunderstood. Here are just a few of the myths and other misinformation floating out there about ADHD."

You might also enhance it by listing MYTH next to each one and then counter it with a FACT point that tells the truth about that topic.

    Just some suggestions, anyway.
    1. busylizzy
Guess I should have done some one-on-one hand holding with this reader.
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
I just think it's possible to read the title in two ways, depending on what information you're bringing to the post to begin with.

Not that it's right she went to town on you before thinking it through. It sure doesn't lend credibility to a person when they go off like that!
    3. busylizzy
TSR - I went back to my blog and put a beginning sentence stating that the list was of myths, lies and untruths. If this doesn't work, I am surely an idiot and an ass!
    4. ThriftShopRomantic
      That'll do 'er.

Having worked writing software manuals for about six years, I can assure you people will do the most bizarre things with instructions unless you're Captain Obvious and spell it all out for 'em.

I think you'll have averted quite a lot of ranters with your one sentence.

Had a similar experience, may I add it was worst. I deleted the comment straight away.
    1. busylizzy
I kept the comment b/c the commenter was actually agreeing with my stance on ADHD. I would have second thoughts if I thought that person's agrument had merit and made me look like an idiot or ass.
    2. kim88
But my case it had nothing to do with my blog rather he/she just called me by f-word.
    3. busylizzy
Definitely delete that kind of comment. Out of sight, out of mind!
    4. jshaw1134
I'm with Kim, if I got a rude ass comment from someone, I wouldn't even think twice, I'd just click the delete button. Especially since it's MY blog, and I can post what I want without having to worry about filtering anything. If you don't like it, don't read it, haha.
  6. micro27
whooa...really! then what did you do? just ignore them, they are just envy of you...
  7. arjunu
which blog? u have 8 blogs!
    1. busylizzy
My ADHD blog. Click on my avatar and then on ADHD AND MORE. Go to the index in the margin and click on ADHD MYTHS.
    2. DangerMouse
      Hence the name BusyLizzy!
  8. dosox
BTW lizz you gotta delete that!!!
    1. busylizzy
Delete the comment? I added my own two cents and pointed out that I agreed with their opinions and that they must have misread the title.
  9. Anok
    Get 'em Lizzy!

Meh - I tend to briefly address comments like that, but I don't give it too much time.
  10. kroegergirl
Ignore "Anonymous" commentors. If they dont have the balls to identify themselves then they are worthless
    1. busylizzy
What if they are a BC member? If so, it would be embarrassing to one's cool if everyone knows who you are. Being anonymous gives one some courage, kind of like the liquid courage of alcohol! LOL!
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
I've actually gotten some decent anonymous comments, too. For whatever reason-- perhaps because they weren't bloggers- they chose to be anonymous or use that option.

It's true most Anonymous comments are to correct a post or to be a little free with the insults. But some end up being all right.
  11. ophase
I think Anonymous commentor has misread the title as you said.
Everyone can make mistakes. It seems she suffered much from ADHD so she started like "You'r an idiot". Funny.
    1. busylizzy
ADHD people tend to be impulsive. Perhaps this is that commentor's excuse.
  12. satijournal
My attitude is: any viewership is good viewership.
    1. busylizzy
...kind of like getting on Mr. Blackwell's Worst Dressed list!
  13. dinsquared
Hahahahahahaha. Reading comprehension for the win.

    Nice post, BTW.
  14. busylizzy
UPDATE - An "Annoyed" person left a comment, ripping the "Anonymous" person. MEOW!

Whoever it was, I owe you $10...
  15. MadMadMargo
Whoa, looks like someone anonymously has their panties in a wad.

You handled yourself very well in the response.
  16. crpitt
I think in your next post you should ask 'Anon' to calm down, take a deep breath and write a guest post
    1. busylizzy
Should I write an "open letter" and post it, like they do in the newspapers?
    2. crpitt
Maybe? I really think they just read it wrong and got riled up. They still shouldn't of been so rude about it, but as you say they are your target audience and hopefully they will come back and see the mistake they made
  17. busylizzy
I am bummed by one thing - this person thinks I am an idiot and ass and will probably never come back to my blog again. They are the parent of an ADHD child which is my target audience.

Maybe they'll peek back to see if I responded and then realize they misread the title of the post.
  18. DangerMouse
People really need to take time reading things correctly esp if they strongly wish to reply! Understandable argument but at the wrong person.
  19. lisleman
speaking of rude comments and name calling - have you read about the irish blogger and ryanair?

    check this out

some people need to learn some manners
  20. LynneaUrania
Now you know what a disc jockey feels like. You are doing much the same thing, but with greater sophistication than most.
  21. busylizzy
UPDATE - Someone named Brad commented, saying they agreed with Anonymous. I commented back - do they agree about the difficulties encountered by having an ADHD child? Or are they agreeing with my being an idiot? I pointed out that the list was of myths and not my own opinions.
    1. letter2V
How rude of anonymous!! You don't owe this person an explanation for things you write in your blog. Some people just like to stir things up.
    2. busylizzy
I commented to cover my own a.. and clarify, so that the next person who came along would understand what was going on.
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
Aw, man... it's just getting worse. What is up with people?
  22. crpitt
Maybe its time to put "Here is a list of myths, lies and untruths about ADHD"

In bold and maybe red lettering?
    1. busylizzy
It's already there in normal black lettering. It's the one and only sentence before the list. That's as far as I'm willing to bend...
  23. salomey5
I hope you won't mind me quoting just this little bit of her comment:

"you are not worth the time"
That after posting one big-ass, line spacing-free paragraph... Lol!

I love getting hate mail, it's always hilariously badly written, angry and incoherent... I find it hysterical!
But alas, it happens too rarely... I have to start ruffling more feather I guess...
  24. busylizzy
UPDATE - "Brad" commented again, stating he did NOT think I was an idiot.
  25. timethief
    I commented too just now.
    1. busylizzy
      Thank you...here and there!
  26. jackpayne
Careful! The toes you step on today may turn out to be attached to the butt you have to kiss tomorrow.
  27. cooper
I'd ignore it too I also tend to delete comments if they are not constructive if they are posted by someone called anonymous. Otherwise I let them stand.

    On second thought:
The post was nothing more than a list with no real discussion potential AND as fast as people scroll through most blogs I'm not surprised the individual misread it.
  28. BernieSandwich
Feel free to abuse me on my blog. At my age any attention is welcome.
  29. BernieSandwich
    I'm still waiting
  30. DearAL
I received a death threat on a sitcom blog I use to run, and the most comments I've ever, 80.

    Just delete the morons comment.
  31. DearAL
and the most comments I've ever?

Only had 3 hours when I reedited that comment. LOL!
    1. busylizzy
      Dear Al,

I can't imagine anything about sitcoms that would get someone so riled up as to send you a death threat! Was it some sort of psycho fan of a show you trashed?! Do you remember what sitcom it was about?

      You've got me all curious!
  32. busylizzy
UPDATE - Anonymous came back. Evidentally someone forwarded the list to A but not the title. That's where the misunderstanding happened. A apologized and I accepted. Everything is okay now.

And they lived happily ever after!
    1. Anok
      Hooray!
    2. busylizzy
Anok - what are you doing up this late? We are in the same time zone it's just after midnight. Go to bed and get some sleep!
    3. timethief
      @busylizzy
Off to bed with you girl and thanks for letting us know that it all worked out in the end.
