I think South Park sucks and its for those who can't form an opinion on their own. The show is a manufactured opinion that people follow and it perpetuates preachy agruments and pointless banter. I will say it is funny at times but thats when it isn't trying to force their opinion down your throat.

What do you guys think?

I'm a South Park fan. I'm not sure how liking the show means not being able to form an opinion on one's own, though.

EDIT: I think it does the same thing a lot of famous comedians do: takes a controversial subject and pokes fun at it.

      I agree with you Jill

thefly - i would not go as far as saying that they are 'trying to force their opinion down your throat'. It's seeks to highlight how Matt Stone and Trey Parker view the society, make a mockery issues they agree and don't agree with and it's entirely up to you to form your own opinion about the show, about the issues they talk about. Isaac Hayes did not agree on their views on Scientology and he quit the show. I'd hardly say he was being forced to agree with them, as he did have a choice, and he exercised that right.

Your right so does Family Guy

This is coming from me seeing a lot of people that form their opinions and arguments off shows rather than legitimate information. I see people form their opinions off what they hear from some other opinion thus diluting the source and argument. Its really frustrating to see kids buy into this type of opinionated dilution of real issues. And you're right, you see it everywhere thats why I bring it up. Even real news station do it and its somewhat discomforting.

The point is that people dilute their information and pass it through someone's filter and get a version of the story that is not their own. Its irresponsible, thats why we, the United States, are so cynical and arrogant; because we think we have the correct opinion about everything.

It seems like you should be frustrated at people for not taking it upon themselves to learn more about issues, rather than an animated TV show. I mean I watch "The Colbert Report" but I'm smart enough to know not to take whatever he says as gospel.

I agree that people should seek out unbiased news sources to get a better understanding of what's going on in the world. But South Park and other shows of its genre are meant to entertain... first and foremost. Yeah, they have their own spin on things, but we all do.

You're right, I am frustrated at people. I guess I just don't like South Park's humor, its rather tasteless for me. But posting this thread actually revealed a deeper frustration for me, thanks for helping me realize that.

No worries If you have some news sources you think might benefit us, I think you should post some links. You can never have too much good information!

    Let's invade Canada!

Oh wait, I'm not American so that doesn't make sense
  5. GFG
What's up with the "blame canada" thing in south park... aint Canada and US brothers??
    1. carlgalloway
It'd be like Malaysia or Indonesia joking about invading Singapore. Its just a joke. All mature countries with close neighbors joke about each other, Australia/New Zealand, South Africa/Namibia, England/Scotland, France/Belgium, Spain/Portugal, its just something we do, and darn its funny most of the time

Matt Stone and Trey Parker are Canadian, so they poke fun in both directions.

I think South Park is comedic genius. Personally I never want the show to go off the air.

The cartoon wars episode - classic. Thank god they did that. Comedy Central will allow images of Christ covered in excrement but will not allow any likeness of Muhammad? Yes - that NEEDS to be lampooned.

Perhaps the greatest thing about the show is that it has blossomed from just being potty-mouthed slapstick in it's first season, to being quite complex as the show has progressed.

Thanks for stating that folks who like South Park can't form their own opinions. My opinion is that folks who don't like South Park suck and are easily offended crybabies.

      I second and third you!
  7. ccRicers
South Park parodies a lot of stuff, but it shouldn't be taken as serious social commentary.
  8. Arcticulates
A cartoon is a cartoon they are "pretend" and "pretentious" and can get away with saying and doing things that no one else can. I don't like South Park mainly because it is a cartoon, and many children watch it, and see things that they really shouldn't be seeing and hearing until they are old enough to understand and decide for themselves what is right and wrong... I know a lot of parents who think cartoons are harmless bits of fluff...
    1. LGramlich
It's an ADULT cartoon. Parents who let their kids watch are the guilty parties here. Don't blame the show because of bad parents.
    2. Arcticulates
Whatever! The show stinks.... is that better!
    3. LGramlich
Wow...You sure get defensive, don't you?

I think you suck! lol, jk. Honestly, If you think its for people who cant form ideas for themselves then you are wrong my friend. Is it not the witty, thought provoking underlaying comedy that makes every scene an interesting one? If you don't have your own thoughts formed on certain things then why even watch South Park? Its funny because you have formed your own thoughts. If not, you would not be saying what you say about it today? It sucks for your because you have formed your thoughts, not because you haven't. Have a sense of humor lol

I retracted my previous statements if you read my replies. Its not that Im frustrated with South Park, its that Im frustrated that people form their opinions on media saturised ideas.

Like I said before the point is that people dilute their information and pass it through someone's filter and get a version of the story that is not their own. Its irresponsible, thats why we, the United States, are so cynical and arrogant; because we think we have the correct opinion about everything.

I realize that I dont hate South Park, just the resulting dilution of dumb people trying to be opinionated based on what they see from shows like South Park.

Hm! This is interesting. I pretty much stopped watching South Park after the movie, because I kinda outgrew the whole potty-mouth thing. But if you guys are saying that the show has transformed into a political commentary, then I might have to start watching it again.

I like shows that poke fun at serious things, life doesn't always have to be serious.

My husband felt like you do, until I convinced him to give it a chance. Now he recognizes it as one of the smartest shows currently on TV. Like you, he still doesn't like the "I learned something today" part, but he doesn't throw the baby out with the bath water anymore.
  12. DOUGGOFFdotCOM
You must be missing the whole picture. South Park touches on a lot of political topics in a funny way. If you want to attack shows based on how they influence people then maybe you should attack the evening news.
    1. LGramlich
      GREAT point!
    2. thefly
I agree, the evening news is very irresponsible with how they report their information. Its not just facts anymore, its about opinions and thats dangerous and irresponsible.
  13. accidentalsexiness
Although I LOVE south park, I think they have jumped the shark a little. Their earlier stuff was better.

Don't watch the show anymore, so I can't comment on the recent lesson-driven episodes. If the show has the power to make people follow like sheep, the creators should do something with said power to help society. Stating the obvious about pop culture is just redundant.
  16. ttiger
south park rule, you should look at fox news for the issue you are talking such forcing opinion and control people ability to thought.

I enjoy South Park for its satire and bent view on the world. I like the way it skewers various subjects.
  18. flamingpoodle
South Park rules! I base all my opinions on that show. Sadly, I haven't seen one in a while, so my opinions are slightly dated now.
  19. busylizzy
I enjoy being shocked by South Park's way of totally perverting something held sacred by our culture. The Christmas episode with the mountain lion and abortion script really crossed the line! Half my brain was laughing and the other half kept thinking "OMG I can't believe they are doing this..."
  20. NatetheGrate
Isn't saying "South Park sucks" a compliment, not a putdown?
  21. flamingpoodle
South Park is really good and really bad at times. It's just a TV show that thrives on shock value.
