Topics: stand up comedy
I was wondering if anyone has ever done any stand up? A local comedy club is having a competition, winner gets $500, and I could use $500.
Any tips, experiences, or other advice would be helpful

I did a stand up in high school once. We began ( my best friend and I) with a disclaimer: The following is not intended to offend. We are sorry if it does. We did a blond act with valley girl lingo and Dan Quale and blond jokes.
My advice: Have fun. -
I have absolutely no-experience on the matter. But, I think that you have to believe your own jokes, just don't start laughing at them. Let the audience do the laughing

As long as you don't take yourself seriously then I don't think it could be a problem. And oh just observe Ellen Digeneres and Seinfield. That should work.

I used to do standup when I was a kid. The first rule is: get the audience's attention. Once you do that, and your jokes are half-decent, you'll do fine. Audiences want to laugh.

I do stand up, and my advice is to get in front of an audience before the contest audience. Do regular open mics, other open mics, gather a group and practice, anything. The competition for this contest is stiff, and there are comedians who have been working on their act for years.

Try the Loony Bin on Wednesday, or the Blank Page. On the third Wednesday of the month, I think there's going to be a new open mic at the Blue Lounge. You should come down; the community is pretty accepting at the moment. I've been a terrible new comic for a few months, and I've been learning a lot.

If you're going to do stand up comedy - you need to sit down and write your script.
Practice it over and over and over and again and again.
Put your heart into it - stand in front of a camera and a mirror and work on your timing - wait for applause and laughter - but be prepared to keep plowing if there is NO laughter.
Practice BOTH ways - fast and slow...
Keep your timing steady. Watch other comedians - watch how they flow - watch their tempo - and watch how they introduce topics and continue on to explain them - to lead into the punchlines.
Work on your stage presence. Watch your stuff in the camera - and in the mirror.
Mimic stances that the other comedians take...
Work on your own personality on stage - so that you feel comfortable doing it.
Then - when you are prepared - and you can do it all by memory - test it out on a few friends...
Watch their reactions and not what they say.
Then change up what you need to - and then go for it!
Good luck - if you're serious - this could be a LOT of fun! -
My best friends' brother did standup once for this same sort of thing you describe. My advice to you would be:
Be succinct.
Her brother is NOT. His stories are tangled tales even when he's NOT up on stage sweating under lights.
Apparently, things did not go terribly well for him.
Don't let it happen to YOU.
