The "please Stumble this post" threads get so long so quickly, I thought it would be a good idea to have a bi-daily "column," where people can leave their newest links.

My first thought was to go with a daily schedule, but then I realized that this isn't fair to everyone. We're from all over the world. Inevitably, with a single-day thread, the later posters will have a disadvantage (their links will not get significant exposure before the next day's thread goes up).

If we all agree to not duplicate from column to column, we can Stumble one another's posts without wasting time. All the "already stumbled this" would be avoided.

Also, to make it manageable for everyone, let's set a 3-post limit per day for this thread.

Here are mine for today:

incinq.blogspot.com/2007/06/guy-24-nova-scotia.html

incinq.blogspot.com/2007/06/girl-19-metaphorical-casablanca.html

incinq.blogspot.com/2007/06/guy-30-in-foliage.html

Post yours. I'll Stumble you.

I think this is a good idea. Those huge threads just got so cumbersome, I didn't want to wade through all the repeats and acknowledgments of stumbles.
    1. incinq
I'm glad you like the idea. As long as this clubhouse has members (even if it's just a few of us), I'll keep it going.

Stumbled the two. I'd previously stumbled the ice cream parlor post, so I wrote a review this time.

      Stumbled.

I don't want to make this thread too long by acknowledging every time I've stumbled, so please consider the honor code in place. I'll be sure to pop into this thread throughout the next two days and stumble everyone. I hope everyone else will do the same for all.

By the way, Mike has named a Stumble "effect" after me. ;p

I hope I bring the same good karma for everyone else.

    Stumbled all so far.

Everyone who posted links here today... don't forget to come back here tomorrow and post up to 3 more. A new "edition" of this thread will be started the day after (June 21). No matter what time zone, there will be a current "edition" up for approx. 48 hours, so I think this will be fair to everyone.

In other words, wherever you are, be sure to post in the newest "edition" edition of this thread.

  36. johnoates
Well, I just stumbled all the URLs posted since I posted my own list. I'm really grateful to those who stumbled my own posts - the 10 of you know who you are! But I'm a bit disappointed that several people who posted after me, and claim to have stumbled *all* the URLs, haven't stumbled me. Seems like some people aren't playing fair.

A separate problem, of course, is that some people who listed their URLs early on will probably not return until the next 2-day post begins, so they won't see the later posts. Perhaps the next 2-day post could start with a reminder to look back to this one and make sure you have stumbled everything? Just an idea.
    1. terencechang
      Johnoates:

That's why you have not seen my face in this discussion until now. I am a little hesitate to list my pages here, because I don't know if I can stumble all above without miss some of them.

It's a great idea, but there are too many links I already stumbled and some I haven't. I don't want to miss anyone of them. I don't mind to stumble someone's page who did not stumble me back.

So I will go a head to stumble your ... just give me few minutes.
    2. johnoates
Hope I didn't sound too grouchy, I was just a bit disappointed when I checked after going through the rest of the list. I don't mind stumbling people who don't stumble me back - I'll do it if I like a page - but this thread is specifically intended for people to do each other a good turn.

Actually, as you now know, you were one of the ones who *did* stumble me in the first place. Thanks!
    3. incinq
"A separate problem, of course, is that some people who listed their URLs early on will probably not return until the next 2-day post begins, so they won't see the later posts. Perhaps the next 2-day post could start with a reminder to look back to this one and make sure you have stumbled everything?"

      I'll add the reminder, johnoates.

That's why I went with the bi-daily instead of a daily in the first place, but no matter what, the early posters will have an advantage. However, that's the case with any thread. Once a thread disappears from view, it's less likely to get attention. Even if it does, once it gets top-heavy, how many have the time to go through an overlong list of links? I know I don't. And if I do try, the duplicates eat up way too much time.

I'm going on good faith, the honor code. I choose to believe members' word on this, over Stumble records. I said as much in this thread:

      www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/are-you-really-stumbled
    4. johnoates
incinq - All fair points, particularly about relying on the honour code. I hadn't read the thread you link to, but just read it and it was interesting stuff.

For the record, the stumbles I got today multiplied my (modest) traffic by about 6x. Not sure how many will return, I'll have to see. Still, it's been an interesting exercise for someone new to blogging!
    5. terencechang
      Johnoates:

I have stumbled two of your other posts
      www.balticvisitor.com/2007/06/15/visitors-to-riga-set-to-travel-in-art-nouv...
      and
      www.balticvisitor.com/2007/06/17/developments-for-tourists-arrested-in-riga...

Please let me know which one bring you more traffic ..

I think I found some patterns and clues about manipulating StumbleUpOn traffic. So I use your page to test...

Not bad to have free traffic, right?
      ;-)
    6. i8yerpuppy
I return several times throughout the day to stumble every URL I find here. I can't check constantly, but I return.

My traffic today has more than doubled the traffic I had yesterday and yesterday was GREAT.
    7. johnoates
Terence: Thanks for the extra stumbles. I'll give you another update in the morning (it's about 11.15pm here), but at the moment the situation looks like this (bear in mind that all my traffic is relatively low as my blog is new and it's a niche subject):

      * 'Five reasons to visit Liepaja, Latvia' - modest increase in traffic, mostly from BlogCatalog people visiting to take a look I think (because there are *no* SU referrals listed for that page). And this is one now has 14 stumbles from you good people, as it's the one which I asked to be stumbled.

      * 'Developments for tourists arrested in Riga' - similar smallish increase with 4 'people who like' listed'. Again, no SU referrals listed.

      * 'Visitors to Riga set to travel in Art Nouveau style' - huge increase in traffic. 5 stumbles - broadly the same people as 'Developments...'

      * 'Feast of the Assumption, Aglona' - huge increase in traffic, only stumbler in common is Terence (who has stumbled all four).

If you can make sense of that then I'll be impressed. The one with the most stumbles hasn't taken off, while two posts with basically the same people stumbling have reacted completely differently. Since those are the two - 'Developments' and 'Visitors to' - are the ones you said were an experiment, perhaps you are on to something. Maybe something to do with the keywords being more SU-friendly? I'll look more closely in the morning. Incidentally the homepage has seen a few SU referrals and some extra traffic, but nothing like those two posts.

In the meantime, I'm off to bask in my site's newfound popularity. The only similar surge in the past month was when I posted information on a group of imprisoned tourists and all their friends visited to read the updates. As mine is quite a niche subject, I don't expect many of these new visitors to return - either you are interested in the Baltics or you are not (it isn't like, say, a humour blog or a photoblog in that sense). That's something I have to work on - keeping people once they visit.
    8. Morriconei
      johnoates,
Sorry, that I didn't stumble your main page the first time through. I got your post, but I must of skipped over the top link.

I'll be sure to leave a review for both.
  37. iluvmonkeys2
    here's a question i'm curious about...

when i go to a site to stumble it, i click the 'thumbs up' icon on my toolbar...then, when i use terence's stumbled? button, it shows me as having given a blank review rather than as a person who 'likes this site'...anyone know why?
    1. terencechang
      iluvmonkeys2:

Don't panic. I thought I have post the reasons in other discuss. Forgot which one. Lost in the discussion sea ..

Anyway, Yes. It's confuse. If you already stumbled a page, you can come back to the review page to review it. It, by default, will show you in the list or review, so you will have chance to review it.

If you open another browser (not the same IE or FireFiox) and go to the same review page, you are list as "People like this page" ...

StumbleUpOn try to flirt your to leave review, which I believe will get your a higher StumbleUpOn ranking. Don't ask me how they calculate the ranking. I am trying to find out.
    2. iluvmonkeys2
thanks terence...i must have somehow missed the other discussion...i just thought it was kind of strange...

if that's what they are trying to do, entice you into leaving a review, it's worked with me...i feel kind of silly having my avatar sitting there next to any empty review, so i started adding one...
  38. Translator
Actually Terence, I tried opening another browser (IE), made sure I wasn't logged in to SU, and I still didn't appear as a "person who likes".

Then, if I added a review, i appeared. But ONLY if there were fewer than ten total "People who like". If there are over ten, a button appears asking to "Show More". If this is the case, I never showed up as a "Person who likes." Just a wierd bug!

And I may have figured something out. If you log onto SU, and view your profile, click Pages, then click the column that shows "All blue thumbs up". These are all the pages you've clicked the "I like it!" button for (I use the button on Firefox).

I checked, and all of the pages that I clicked thumbs up for on this "Stumble This" thread appear here. However, I followed those URL's, and clicked the "Reviews of this Page" button, and I still don't show up in the "People who like" area.

1)Either SU has some major BUG issues to work out.
2)The Firefox Toolbar (specifically the thumbs up) doesn't work properly.
3)I'll leave quick reviews on all my Thumbs Up pages just so people know that I've stumbled.

On the honor, system - I've stumbled all the posts that appear above in the "Stumble This" thread. I believe in reciprocity, and my profile shows a heck of a lot of "Thumbs Ups" that I've given out! I just wish I'd show up as a "person who likes". Because me likey.

I hope this mess gets cleared up sometime soon!
    1. terencechang
If there is more than 10 already in the Review page. Yes. you have to click "See more" to see yourself, if you are not logged in. Otherwise, you are always see yourself in the review list.

I don't think it's a bug, but I think it's the way the developer intend to do. There are page with over hundred people. They don't want to slow down the page load. So they only show 10.

This is what I feel. Don't QUOTE on me. I don't think it matter how many people like this page. It won't get your more traffic. Yes. you will have more chance to get traffic because many people like your page.

It's more important which category your page are in. The tag and the category is more important. So the first person who stumble your page is the key people who will effect your page's traffic .. ;-)

Well.. I think I might be telling the secret.... Don't ban me ... StumbleUpOn.
  39. Translator
BTW, you can check anyone's stumbles by accessing this URL:

    http://"Login Name".stumbleupon.com/favorites/

Just replace "Login Name" with the name of the stumbler you'd like to know about.

    Mine is:

    yourtranslator.stumbleupon.com/favorites/

if you want to see that your pages have been stumbled by me!

  40. absolutelytrue
I use the StumbleUpon toolbar in Firefox. As far as I know I have stumbled everyone here so far. Please DO let me know if I'm not showing up on your stumbles. I have had the incidence of knowing for a fact I've stumbled a url before, only to go back later and my thumbs up thing was blue again as if I hadn't stumbled yet. So if there's a problem let me know. Otherwise you should all be showing stumbles from me. I would hate for this not to be working because actually I'm pretty devoted to the honor system of stumbling. It's always worked out well for me except for the occasional toolbar glitch.
    1. Translator
Absolutelytrue - I saw you visited my site. Which post did you stumble? Because you didn't show up on any of my SU reviews. Not that I'm really greedy for stumbles, but I just want to show people that SU has quite a few bugs to work out.

And you said to let you know if you're not showing up.

      Dang...

And I stumbled all three of yours.
    2. absolutelytrue
Translator, any posts listed here I stumbled with the thumbs up in my toolbar.. thanks for letting me know there's a problem. I will go back and see what urls you listed and I will try again!

Dang is right!!!! I love the stumble trades and I spend time making sure I stumble everyone.. I hate to think they aren't showing.

      Going back to check now.
    3. absolutelytrue
Translator, well I went back and it still appeared according to my toolbar that your pages were stumbled.. so I went in and added reviews as well. Hopefully you will see them now?
