In today's busy life keeping a check on alll the calories you eat can be pretty demanding and almost impossible.

As scietific researches prove it, it's our "sugar" & carbohydrate intake that builds our calorie count instead of the fats.

How sugar conscious are you? Do you make sure you use sugar substitutes or sugar free foods & drinks?

I don't use a lot of sweet stuff so I keep whatever natural sugars are in my food.

Based on the amount of Diet Pepsi I drink, I believe "Nutrasweet" is the brand name for "crack".

I never drink soda or sugary drinks. But that's the only conscious decision I've made to cut sugar.

I don't have any sugar in my house -- it's not to do with weight loss either. I just eat all natural stuff and boy is it delicious, mmm mmm good.

I actually like sweet food. So its sugar for me, however since I am getting older, I began to cut my sugar intake for health reasons.

Sugar, and all of it's chemical substitutes, are about to go the way of the dinosaur. Keep an eye out for something called Stevia. It's all natural, sweeter than sugar, and it may actually have health benefits! You may very well see this in your diet soda's before too long.

I'm yet to try it (if it's ok for diabetics type 2? )
  8. wehireu
I hate sugar substitutes so I prefer natural sugars like those found in fruit.

I'm very anti artificial sweeteners, I did a blog post about it a while back. Nasty stuff !!(unless it's the 100 percent natural)

i echo this... i got poisoning from aspartame several times when i was a teenager. i switched to splenda for years but now it gives me awful migraines. i just try to use honey in moderation
    2. dialoguewithyou

I'm no expert on it, but I've read a couple of pages that suggest that it could potentially reverse diabetes..
    1. Jules66
Oh really? I have never heard of that.. except that diabetics often use artificial sweeteners.

I still won't use it, especially since I suffer with severe tinnitus , and there are links now with artificial sweeteners and tinnitus also.

Jules, I am just as skeptical of the constant chain of new artificial sweeteners, but from the little I have seen stevia is actually an herb, not something chemically constructed. I'd have to learn more about how it's processed before I'd try it, but it may actually be a natural sweetener.

    I love sugar

We all need a pinch bit of sugar in life.
    1. dialoguewithyou
      hmm.......... quite very right

I go for the real sugar, I am not sweet enough lol. I can't stomach the artificial sweeteners, they really do make me sick. I don't need to worry about my calories though otherwise I would just cut back on how much I sugar I use.
  13. KPinski77
I definitely try to use sugar substitutes whenever possible... I'm drinking my morning coffee with a little Splenda right now.

I use real sugar when baking anything sweet. I don't add sugar to foods that are already sweet - and we try and focus on the naturally sweetened foods and juices (fruit etc).

But all processed food has some sugar in it - even your tomato sauce and salad dressing. So watch out
  15. Agit8r
I like my sugar in chlorinated form... jk, Splenda gives me a headache

I am a thirsty person and drink quite alot during the day. Unfortunately I hate water and am not really into tea or coffee. If I drank regular milk, soda, or juice I'd be taking in about 2000 to 3000 extra calories every day and I'd be HUGE! Sugarless is for me.

When my dad came to visit, I used Splenda if making anything special for dessert b/c he has to count his carbs due to having diabetes.

SarcasticChick. years ago I used to use 'equal' sweetners in my coffee's , and I would suffer with bad migraines as well..

If anyone is interested check out 'one' my posts re this topic ..

My refined sugar intake is very low, but when I do want sugar in my tea or the occasional soda I prefer equal or diet soda.

I do use just a bit of real sugar in my coffee. I have read that natural sugar is actually better for you than all those artificial sweeteners. One thing I totally try and avoid is products with high fructose corn syrup. That stuff is not good for us.

I have started to make a point about checking the sugar content on everything. Most foods that are "low fat" contain a LOT of sugar, even brands like Weight Watchers! I started watching what I eat a few months ago, and have now gone back to my (personal) normal weight which I was at in 1999 the last time. I haven't exactly been fat, but the difference is noticeable.
  21. Floormodel
sugar, I prefer the real thing.
and occasionally I eat fried foods too, if I have to eat to live I'm going to enjoy it.
  22. roloni
All I have to say is how possibly could fake man made synthetic stuff be better for you than 100% natural. Think people just use less sugar. I do believe that the fake stuff makes you want things even sweeter then normal making you addicted it. I see to many people order a slice of cheese cake and a diet coke. Just have water its good too. Sorry started a diet and they want me to drink diet sodas frac that I am having water.

I try to avoid artificial sweeteners as the chemicals are fairly hair raising. If I want a sweet drink, I go for rooibos tea, as that has a natural sweetness to it and no calories. I drink one or two pots of it per day.
    1. SweetViolet
      ACK! Rooibos tea! EWWWWW!

My mother-in-law drinks it by the litre and my husband occasionally has some, so I keep it in the house.

It smells like wet hay and makes my husband's breath smell like the inside of a haybarn with a leaky roof.

      Nasty stuff!
  24. SweetViolet
My husband is diabetic so we use artificial sweeteners.

They don't make you want things sweeter than nornal, in fact, my husband tasted a dessert the other day that he thought was too sweet...this was something he used to eat often before being diagnosed.

I think the debate about "artificial vs natural" sweeteners is just silly. A "natural" sweetener is just a bunch of chemicals, too, and refined sugars are anything but natural! Table sugar does not occur in nature and while it is derived from nature, aren't ALL chemicals?

Millions of people have used artificial sweeteners for decades now. Zillions of studies have been done. It hasn't been shown to be harmful in normal use quantities.

I wish people would stop making mountains out of molehills, especially when it can ultimately harm others...a diabetic, particularly a diabetic child, who buys into this "chemicals are bad for you" crap without realizing that "natural" sugars are just chemicals, too, might make some dietary changes that ultimately have devastating consequences, including blindness and death.
  25. mwaybob
I have sweetener unless it is the special day, inwhich case I have a cake
  26. meridance
Frankensugar scares me...it's either natural or nothing.
  27. theliterate
I don't really have a sweet tooth. Weird for a female. I'm one of the few females who don't really care about chocolate. I can eat it, but one bite is enough. I don't have the urge to eat a whole bar lol. I'm more into salty things. Like soups mmm
    1. legbamel
I'm another. Too much sugar makes me absolutely nauseous. Hubby has a sweet tooth big enough for both of us, and he used to hate the taste of artificial sweeteners. He gave up regular soda, though, in an attempt to reduce his caloric intake (and it worked beautifully) and now he doesn't crave sweet stuff as much because he doesn't have the constant, sugar-fueled highs and lows in his metabolism. I still think he drinks too much soda, but he's lost weight and now we have it in the house when I want one.
    2. theliterate
That's great. What you should do throw away everything lol. We have lots of sweets and soda because certain people buy it all the time.
    3. legbamel
If hubby wants junk food, he has to buy it himself. Outside of the occasional bag of corn chips or pretzels, I won't pay for it. Halloween and Easter keep us in candy for the year, so I don't have to buy any of that.
  28. gearsofrock
I try to stay away from sugar, but if I must, I go for the rich brown sugar "Sugar in the Raw" from Hawaii
  29. dayflyer
I don't use sugar in hot drinks, and only drink carbonated stuff occasionally if I'm really thirsty and there's no alternative. I can almost feel the sugar in cola drinks rotting my teeth.

But I do like cake, biscuits, chocolate and other sweets occasionally - even more occasionally since moving to Greece where they aren't as good as in th UK.

So I'd have to conclude I'm both!
