I don't use sugar in hot drinks, and only drink carbonated stuff occasionally if I'm really thirsty and there's no alternative. I can almost feel the sugar in cola drinks rotting my teeth.

But I do like cake, biscuits, chocolate and other sweets occasionally - even more occasionally since moving to Greece where they aren't as good as in th UK.

So I'd have to conclude I'm both!

I'm another. Too much sugar makes me absolutely nauseous. Hubby has a sweet tooth big enough for both of us, and he used to hate the taste of artificial sweeteners. He gave up regular soda, though, in an attempt to reduce his caloric intake (and it worked beautifully) and now he doesn't crave sweet stuff as much because he doesn't have the constant, sugar-fueled highs and lows in his metabolism. I still think he drinks too much soda, but he's lost weight and now we have it in the house when I want one. :D

Jules, I am just as skeptical of the constant chain of new artificial sweeteners, but from the little I have seen stevia is actually an herb, not something chemically constructed. I'd have to learn more about how it's processed before I'd try it, but it may actually be a natural sweetener.

My husband is diabetic so we use artificial sweeteners.

They don't make you want things sweeter than nornal, in fact, my husband tasted a dessert the other day that he thought was too sweet...this was something he used to eat often before being diagnosed.

I think the debate about "artificial vs natural" sweeteners is just silly. A "natural" sweetener is just a bunch of chemicals, too, and refined sugars are anything but natural! Table sugar does not occur in nature and while it is derived from nature, aren't ALL chemicals?

Millions of people have used artificial sweeteners for decades now. Zillions of studies have been done. It hasn't been shown to be harmful in normal use quantities.

I wish people would stop making mountains out of molehills, especially when it can ultimately harm others...a diabetic, particularly a diabetic child, who buys into this "chemicals are bad for you" crap without realizing that "natural" sugars are just chemicals, too, might make some dietary changes that ultimately have devastating consequences, including blindness and death.

I try to avoid artificial sweeteners as the chemicals are fairly hair raising. If I want a sweet drink, I go for rooibos tea, as that has a natural sweetness to it and no calories. I drink one or two pots of it per day.

All I have to say is how possibly could fake man made synthetic stuff be better for you than 100% natural. Think people just use less sugar. I do believe that the fake stuff makes you want things even sweeter then normal making you addicted it. I see to many people order a slice of cheese cake and a diet coke. Just have water its good too. Sorry started a diet and they want me to drink diet sodas frac that I am having water.

I have started to make a point about checking the sugar content on everything. Most foods that are "low fat" contain a LOT of sugar, even brands like Weight Watchers! I started watching what I eat a few months ago, and have now gone back to my (personal) normal weight which I was at in 1999 the last time. I haven't exactly been fat, but the difference is noticeable.

I am a thirsty person and drink quite alot during the day. Unfortunately I hate water and am not really into tea or coffee. If I drank regular milk, soda, or juice I'd be taking in about 2000 to 3000 extra calories every day and I'd be HUGE! Sugarless is for me.

When my dad came to visit, I used Splenda if making anything special for dessert b/c he has to count his carbs due to having diabetes.

I go for the real sugar, I am not sweet enough lol. I can't stomach the artificial sweeteners, they really do make me sick. I don't need to worry about my calories though otherwise I would just cut back on how much I sugar I use.

Sugar, and all of it's chemical substitutes, are about to go the way of the dinosaur. Keep an eye out for something called Stevia. It's all natural, sweeter than sugar, and it may actually have health benefits! You may very well see this in your diet soda's before too long.
