Suicide is a very serious subject.

Do you know anyone who has commited suicide?
Do you know anyone who is thinking about commiting suicide?
Do you know anyone who exhibits suicidal tendencies?

I blog about this subject today:

would have been nice if you had included a national crisis hot line link on your blog entry.
    suicidehotlines.com/

Yes, and not currently. I worked for 7 years as a suicide crisis counselor on a hot line.

Your right...I should have included one. It was an oversight on my part. Thanks for putting one in your comment.

Three years ago I seriosuly considered suicide. As you can see I go through it.

I have a long lost friend who allegedly committed suicide. I've never been able to confirm that. Other than him I dont know anyone who might have been thinking or committed suicide.

I don't condone and never have thought about suicide, but I understand the logic that goes into it.

Yes I know two people who did. I'm not talking about "masked suicides". My friend's father's was the worst. He shot himself. He was a wonderful person and I'll never forget this pain.

I think India has the highest numbers of suicide. student commit suicide as they failed in their exam or even when they passed but failed to secured his target. Many farmers also commit suicide.

I knew someone. It was very tragic. He was trying to protect his little sister from his step dad. He murdered his step dad and he couldn't live with himself. The guilt must have gotten to him and his mother didn't want anything more to do with him.

People commit suicide due to different reasons. The main reason is considered as depression. If we have any depressed bloggers or anyone who is feeling down enough to commit suicide please visit www.samaritans.org/ They will not reveal your personal information to a third party. If you don't like to go there write a letter about your problem. I underwent training at one of their branches as a volunteer and we were given strict instructions on privacy of the callers. I couldn't serve them due to my tight schedule. But I know that they can help you. They undergo special training to help their callers to dig out the hidden negative feelings and buildup positive ones to replace the negativity. Don’t forget that depression is like a cold. The difference is, this has affected your mind and the brain.

The following will be useful at the initial stage,

    hubpages.com/hub/How-to-fight-against-depression

Don't forget that there're antidepressants to overcome the problem.

It is amazing how just talking it out can help, and especially with a trained person who will not judge but will just listen.
    2. LGramlich
Don't start with "antidepressants will help." They DON'T. They MASK the feelings you need to deal with. They make you NUMB. When I was on them I preferred depression to complete numbness! Over 70% of people prescribed antidepressants do not find them effective.

voodooKobra, I don't think logic has much to do with it. While people have come up with logical defenses of suicide (and, in fact, in some cultures it's considered honorable under certain circumstances), most people who actually go through with it, or attempt it, are dealing with overwhelming emotional pain that they see no other way to escape.

and Herman Hesse called it "the emergency exit."
    3. voodooKobra
Yeah, it doesn't take a genius to understand what causes a person to choose to stop existing.

GK16, while antidepressants can help, often people experience overwhelming suicidal feelings after antidepressants take effect. For that reason, I think it's important that antidepressants (at least initially) be used in conjunction with some form of interpersonal therapy

and then some become more suicidal after taking some anit depressants

suicide is the result of narrowing of cognition ... people who commit or attempt suicide find that to be the only way for them ... most of the times just one talk can be enough to change the decision of a person who is about to commit suicide

yes i know many girls in my area who are dead now, they commited suicide. two girls hanged themselves to the cieling fan. but in my view, sucides are commited by them who don't have ideasto solve problems. they start thinking that they don't have any way to choose. this is the cause.
but as we have taken birth by luck or by god grace. so we dont ever think of commiting suicide. and if somebody is thinks to do that then first they should share their sorow or problem with anybody even with god. then any nswer wouuld surely come. we should not giveup our precious life for any kind of problems. live long and live happily in any situation this must be the formula of life.

Everyone sometimes thinks about ending his life prematurely, but with most this thought only occurs very sporadic and doesn't linger. With some, it does and they start to withdraw from life and make living with them hard for the persons who love them because they want to distance themselves mentally from these persons to act out upon their unhappiness. To prevent suicide, action needs to be taken in the built-up of the drama. But, of course, it is very hard to act on time because often we don't see the symptons since they are hidden behind a wall. This doesn't mean they aren't there. Theirloved ones and by people surrounding them must act and think like the other person and see how an action he/she made doesn't correlate with expected behaviour. Most often, it will be an action of non-completetence of tasks, the giving-up on a life-long dream and other similar negative activities. You should also check the suicide rate of the state you live in. This often is an indication whether or not you need to worry more, or less about suicide. For instance, northerly countries (Finland, Sweden, Russia) have a high suicide rate because of the lack of sun during the winters -thought to be one of the main reasons behind the increased chance of suicides in these parts.

If you want people to not commit suicide, then you need to make them long for life. This can be done by keeping their spirits up and by keeping them follow dreams and visions they have had in their minds. Yet, that doesn't mean you don't have to pull them down from the clouds from time to time, just do it extra carefully.

[Do you know anyone who has [committed] suicide?]
Not intimately. Also, the verb "commit" has 2 T's in its conjugated forms.

[Do you know anyone who is thinking about [committing] suicide?]
If I did, they probably wouldn't tell me until the last second. It kinda fucks up their plans.

They just want to stop the pain, they can't see how their life can be if they could see past the pain.
    1. voodooKobra
Yeah. Usually their thoughts are along the lines of: "My life is hell, and I don't think it will ever, EVER improve."

I lost a friend to suicide when I was in high school, and soon after it began to look like a good idea to me too. Fortunately, despite my depression, I never had the courage(?) to act on it.
    1. PotatoChef
I think it takes way more courage not to act on it. It is hard to lose a friend or anyone that is close to you. But life does go on.

Perhaps the best we can do is live the best life possible in memory of those that couldn't.

"Perhaps the best we can do is live the best life possible in memory of those that couldn't."

I like that. That is indeed the positive thing to do.

Hi jafabrit , yes it is amazing. But it is true. It is better if we can find more time to listen to them.

I must thank LGramlich for sharing her experience. I personally think it is better to avoid drugs. For someone like you who is aware of feelings it is not necessary. But psychotherapists prescribe drugs to patients with a serious condition because they will not be able to communicate or do anything to help themselves. But thanks to you I have changed my hub and removed 'antidepressants' .

    hubpages.com/hub/How-to-fight-against-depression

drjay1966, I agree with you. They should not depend on drugs.
    1. jafabrit
I view anti-depressants the same way as I view other meds, they help mask the pain so that one has the time to heal and work on whatever issue needs to be worked on (whether it is mental or physical). In some cases it is like depending on meds for any other permanent ailment so one can live a functional life.

As with all medications it requires cautiousness, looking at the pro's and cons, and finding the right balance. I have a loved one who has been helped enormously with anti-depressants (not numbed at all but freed from the daily curse of clinical depression), and another loved one who suffered terrible side effects and suicidal feelings (cognitive therapy has worked MUCH better although finding a professional specialized in that area was nearly impossible).
