I'm in the middle of watching King Kong and it's much much better than I thought it would be! In fact, if it weren't for all the BUGS I'd be really really enjoying myself...

So, what are the films that you thought would be awful but turned out to be really good?

    Old version or new?

New! I thought it would be terrible...but it's got real heart to it. We had an hour of character development before we got into the action and it is really quite stunning!

That is our new "must see at Christmas" film. Just an all around good movie.

I hated Love Actually...Richard Curtis is too schmaltzy for me...

    Stranger Than Fiction

I didn't like that one actually...I thought it would be great but I hated the two main characters so I just didn't enjoy it..

It surprised me because I couldn't imagine even remotely liking a movie with Will Ferrell. But I found the whole concept very imaginative.

I loved the concept...just not the execution Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson were fantastic though.

"Shallow Hal" ...at least much better than expected

In a similar vein...'The Pick of Destiny' was actually quite funny! Seems Jack Black is very surprising!

Role Models! Loved it! Usually I hate Stiffler, but he was really good in it!

I was the opposite with that film - I really wanted it to be good but was sooooo dissapointed

Troop Beverly Hills, the film that made me fall in love with Shelley Long. Also, the music score of Rocky Horror.

Ugh, I hated King Kong. Too many scenes of longing loving looks between woman and ape.

Movie that turned out to be much better than I was expecting: the Hangover. I thought for sure I would hate it. Not only did I not hate it, I nearly cried from laughing so hard.

Noriko's Dinner Table (Japanese film, by Sion Sono)

After watching its predecessor, Suicide Club (or Suicide Circle, what-have-you), I wasn't expecting much of this one, seeing that Suicide Club tried to be and do too much at the same time, not to mention that the gory scenes are more comical than terrifying. They shouldn't have used so much ketchup for blood.

Now, Noriko's Dinner Table is not only a gazillion times better, but it does away with the gore (not Al Gore), the "comedy" and the, uh ... girly songs that make people kill themselves, all present in the previous one, leaving us only with well-represented drama and answering a few questions about the "suicide clubs". The acting is so very well done, even by the supporting cast. The lead character's mother is only in three or four scenes, but ends up with a rather surprising display of drama and depression.

The story is long, two hours and forty freaking minutes, but it's so well worth it that I don't mind watching that film repeatedly. And it left me thinking ... not asking questions, just thinking about the characters' decisions throughout the film, and whether I'd do the same or not.

While it's somewhat related to Suicide Club, it's not absolutely necessary to watch that film before this one. In fact, Noriko's Dinner Table could've done just as well without references to the events in that other movie, which are provided as both flashbacks and new footage to explain what just happened there.

Anyway, I should've put this in a blog post or something, but it's not a movie review blog

I really liked Suicide Club. I will have to check the other one out as well.

I didn't think that "UP" would be bad, but was surprised. It was fantastic, even for adults.

I didn't think "Slumdog millionare" would be good, but it surprised me and I loved it.
