I'm in the middle of watching King Kong and it's much much better than I thought it would be! In fact, if it weren't for all the BUGS I'd be really really enjoying myself...
So, what are the films that you thought would be awful but turned out to be really good?

Noriko's Dinner Table (Japanese film, by Sion Sono)
After watching its predecessor, Suicide Club (or Suicide Circle, what-have-you), I wasn't expecting much of this one, seeing that Suicide Club tried to be and do too much at the same time, not to mention that the gory scenes are more comical than terrifying. They shouldn't have used so much ketchup for blood.
Now, Noriko's Dinner Table is not only a gazillion times better, but it does away with the gore (not Al Gore), the "comedy" and the, uh ... girly songs that make people kill themselves, all present in the previous one, leaving us only with well-represented drama and answering a few questions about the "suicide clubs". The acting is so very well done, even by the supporting cast. The lead character's mother is only in three or four scenes, but ends up with a rather surprising display of drama and depression.
The story is long, two hours and forty freaking minutes, but it's so well worth it that I don't mind watching that film repeatedly. And it left me thinking ... not asking questions, just thinking about the characters' decisions throughout the film, and whether I'd do the same or not.
While it's somewhat related to Suicide Club, it's not absolutely necessary to watch that film before this one. In fact, Noriko's Dinner Table could've done just as well without references to the events in that other movie, which are provided as both flashbacks and new footage to explain what just happened there.
Anyway, I should've put this in a blog post or something, but it's not a movie review blog
