The biggest conception about swine flu is that it can be spread by eating pork. Swine Flu is not spread by eating pork or its products including salami, ham and sausages. However, it is a good practice to cook pork over 70 degrees C, which kills the virus.

You should cook pork thoroughly anyway. Otherwise trichinosis can ensue.

Title: Swine flu: Can I eat pork.
Answer: Yes but as usual cook it well to avoid getting trichinosis.

However, it is a good practice to cook pork over 70 degrees C, which kills the virus.

IMO it's important to note that the swine flu virus is NOT found in the meat. It's an airborne virus that is being passed from human to human like any other respiratory virus. And, as greencurmudgeon states we should always be cooking pork and other meats thoroughly to avoid trichinosis which is also found in many carnivorous and omnivorous animals worldwide.

Trichinosis is a food-borne disease caused by a microscopic parasite. Anyone who eats undercooked meat of infected animals can develop trichinosis. Pork products are implicated more often than other meats, however, other animals such as dogs, cats, rats and many wild animals (including fox, wolf and polar bear) may harbor the parasite.

When humans eat infected pork or any other meat that has been improperly cooked, they become infected. Improperly cooked wild animal meat may also be responsible for infecting humans with trichinosis. Person-to-person spread does not occur.

The best prevention is to make sure that pork products and all other meats are properly cooked. The desirable temperature is at least 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Storing infected meat in a freezer with a temperature no higher than -13 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 days will also destroy the parasite.

You can't eat pork if you're Jewish.

Otherwise, as long as it's cooked thoroughly, it's safe pig out on pork.

You can eat pork, but make sure you follow Doll's example when you step outside:
