Winnipeg, CDC lab find swine flu viruses in Mexican specimens; WHO worried
By Helen Branswell, Medical Reporter, The Canadian Press

TORONTO - Mexican authorities confirmed Friday they have found human infections with swine flu virus, a discovery that suggests the outbreak there is linked to person-to-person spread of swine flu in the southwestern United States.

Canada's National Microbiology laboratory found 16 positive cases of swine flu out of a shipment of 51 clinical specimens sent from Mexico to Winnipeg for testing, sources say. Those specimens included lung biopsies and nasal swabs, among other types of specimens.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has also found positives among samples from Mexico tested in the CDC labs in Atlanta.

"We have tested 14 samples from Mexico and seven of those tested positive," Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the CDC, told a news conference Friday.

He confirmed eight cases of swine flu infection in people in Southern California and Texas over the past few days. The latest case involves a child in the San Diego area who has recovered, Besser said.

... The world is currently at level 3 of the WHO's six-rung pandemic alert ladder, because of ongoing sporadic cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian flu virus. Phase 3 means there are occasional human cases with a novel flu virus.

WHO would need the advice of an expert panel to move up to Phase 4 or beyond. Phase 6 is a pandemic.

"On Wednesday, the CDC announced that routine surveillance had uncovered mild flu cases during late March and April, caused by a novel swine flu virus. Those affected, aged 9 to 54, live in and around San Diego, California, and San Antonio, Texas, near the Mexican border. None was severe. Symptoms were normal for flu, with more nausea and diarrhoea than usual."

Mexico hit by deadly new flu virus
Mexico City has closed universities and schools until further notice, suspended all major public events and advised people feeling flu-like symptoms to stay home from work.

Mexico City's busiest subway stations are handing out face masks to passengers to use on crowded train carriages. The city government has closed museums, including the popular Anthropology Museum.

Mexico has confirmed 20 deaths from the flu and has 40 other possible fatalities and 1,004 people reported infected. Most of those who died are aged between 25 and 45.

In California and Texas, eight people were infected with the new strain, but all of them have recovered.

The virus is an influenza A virus, carrying the designation H1N1 and is spreading from person to person. It contains DNA from avian, swine and human viruses, including elements from European and Asian swine viruses, according to the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC.

The virus is being passed on by sneezing, coughing or physical contact.

Mexico swine flu has 'pandemic potential'- WHO holds emergency meeting
WHO director-general Margaret Chan, who broke off a visit to Washington to return to the organization's headquarters in Switzerland, said the outbreak involves "an animal strain of the H1N1 virus, and it has pandemic potential."

Chan said it's too early to say whether a pandemic will actually occur, but she referred to the outbreak as a "serious situation" that needed to be followed closely. ...

"This is a particular kind of swine flu and it's actually no longer swine flu, although it came from pigs. It's a new human influenza virus," Allison McGeer, director of infection control at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto told CBC News.

scarry stuff. we are staying in cal. and thats a bit two close for comfort.
  7. polybore
This outbreak is worth monitoring. It ticks some of the boxes for being a possible serious pandemic i.e. is air borne and is a zoonose (inter species virus infection).

The good news regarding particularly virulent viruses is that they generally mutate to a less virulent form. This is because a virus that seriously incapacitates or kills the host quickly does not have the same opportunity to propagate itself in a population.

The key indicator of how dangerous this particular outbreak might be is how long a host is infectious before they become very unwell.
    1. polybore
In polybore's previous post they mentioned how time is crucial in the spread of the virus.

Unfortunately it seems that Mexico was slow to identify this new strain of "swine flu". A consequence of this delay is that this virus has been able to spread around the globe.

Possible and confirmed cases have been reported in New Zealand, Scotland and Israel. Unfortunately due to the nature of international air travel and the use of hub international airports it can be assumed that the virus has gone global.

What medications are available to treat humans with swine flu?
Four antiviral drugs are licensed for use in the United States: amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir. While most swine flu viruses have been susceptible to all four drugs, the most recent seven swine flu viruses isolated from humans are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine. Right now, the CDC recommends oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine flu viruses.

No it did not start in Canada. Canada is working with Mexican and U.S. health officials and they have confirmed that the virus in both countries is linked and is in fact a new strain of influenza A H1N1 human swine virus. About 80 per cent of the virus is highly related to a North American body of swine flu that's been around for a number of years, but about 20 per cent of it comes from an Eurasian variety of swine flu first seen in Thailand.

What do you know about the swine flu virus and how it's transmitted?
'Only what I read in the papers' - Plus what the CDC, Mayo, and all say.

The CDC has a pretty good Q & A: www.cdc.gov/swineflu/key_facts.htm but it doesn't point out that handling raw pork improperly can transmit the disease. Cook the stuff, and it's fine (and tasty). They've got a decent brochure in pdf format: www.cdc.gov/swineflu/pdf/brochure.pdf

From the repeated 'wash your hands before handling food' advice, it seems to be transmitted by contact - although I'd guess that a good sneeze or cough would have a shot at making it an air born virus, too.

(Shameless plug follows) I've posted a few facts and opinions, plus a set of links (near the bottom of the post) to relevant pages by CDC, WHO and other credible sources of information. apatheticlemming.blogspot.com/2009/04/mutant-swine-flu-pandemic-possible-bu...

Mexican president Calderón in the news a while ago, summarising the cases there (it is the largest sample, so the first indicator of severity of the outbreak on a random human population):

67% of cases have already left the hospital ("mild" flu, including "normal flu")
26% of cases remain at hospital ("severe" flu)
6% of cases are casualties ("deadly" flu)

    www.eluniversal.com.mx/notas/593755.html

Problem: the "mild" cases surely include "normal strains", so casualty rate % might be larger than said for the mutated strain.

We should remember though that this is still a flu and does not necessarily result in hospitalization or death. Crap...I just ate a piece of pork explosion quiche
    1. timethief
Hmmmmm ... swine flu cannot be contracted by eating pork and it's not a service to anyone to imply that it can be.

It spreads the same way that other flu viruses spread. Originally this flu spread from pig to pig, but according to the CDC it could also infect humans who handle pigs. This current strain of swine flu has mutated from the original ones. It is affecting humans more than the other strains in the past and it is spreading from human to human.

So, while you don’t need to be concerned about getting swine flu from the pork you eat, you still should be concerned with protecting yourself from the virus.

Here are some steps to take to help prevent the transmission of this swine flu (or any other flu virus).
*Avoid contact with others who have symptoms of respiratory flu.
      * Avoid traveling to areas where there are swine flu outbreaks.
      * Stay home if you do get sick and contact health autorities.
      * Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash immediately and wash your hands.
      * Wash your hands frequently.
      * Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth (which is how a flu virus on your hands can enter your body).

The CDC says that the virus is “susceptible to the prescription antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir.”

    Hi,
I just want to say that the swine flu is not deadly. All cases in the US have been mild, and it is not resistant to treatment with Tamiflu and Relenza if started early. Everyone has recovered in the US.

There have been deaths from pneumonia in Mexico, but the link is not clear - were there underlying health problems for instance...TB, HIV, decreased immune function?

    www.emaxhealth.com/1020/90/30644/swine-flu-cause-pneumonia-mexico-not-fully...

It is a mix of Avian flu, Human influenza A (without the typical subtypes) and Asian flu virus.

The mystery seems to be why were there deaths in Mexico? It is not historically uncommon to see high initial death rates when a virus mutates, followed by mild cases of the same disease...Watch and wait, and do all the things we know we should to reduce the spread.

Gilead (GILD) is the stock you want for Tamaflu.. it's only gone up a little, unlike the tiny stocks that are flying that don't even have a vaccine (BCRX, NVAX in particular, but there are about 5-6)

Be careful with stocks these days - one piece of bad news and your stock could plunge overnight while you sleep, you wake up with a big loss.

Today I had DNDN for the Provenge results on prostate cancer - stock was doing fine, suddenly plunged 40% and was halted - obvious manipulation, now it's supposedly back up, but who knows how these things happen, there's MUCHO CORRUPTION occurring in the U.S. right now, as if the RATS are hoarding up money for the coming Depression, if we aren't already there.

Look for companies with cures, help them w investments and you may have two positives working at once: healing the sick, and rewarding the creators of the cures financially.

"...At present the population of the world is increasing at about 58,000 per diem. War, so far, has had no very great effect on this increase, which continued throughout each of the world wars.... War ... has hitherto been disappointing in this respect ... but perhaps bacteriological war may prove more effective. If a Black Death could spread throughout the world once in every generation.... The state of affairs might be somewhat unpleasant, but what of it? Really high-minded people are indifferent to happiness, especially other peoples'...."

Ah the media's goal of Mass Hysteria is working well. It's a great chance for us all to forget other topics and focus on something random. This was my blog rant today LOL

Your site wouldn't let me comment, re controlling the masses through the media, and NOT telling the real story (the "word verification" kept coming up blank, so I could never "verify".

I was trying to comment that a few years ago, the Vatican was arguing about re-teaching the resurrection as a parable, as originally intended - while some thought this would likely drive away "fundamentalists". Suddenly, the SEX scandal broke! This diverted everyone's attention away and now we had a situation where they could point the finger at "a few bad apples" and avoid the bigger issues!
(they sent the Crusaders to Jerusalem to "retrieve the body of Jesus, bring it back to Rome" - how quickly we forget 1000 yr old history!) - the point here is not these details, but how they DIVERTED ATTENTION away from a more controversial topic! Myth and parable vs reality..

They let popularity determine dogma apparently - whatever the followers want, that's the religious teaching! too funny... "I created my religion and I dig it!", to paraphrase Firesign Theater.

Those in power often divert attention away with trivia - swine flu vs the collapse of western capitalism and banking! (flu - I'm really scared now, forget not being able to find a job or eat)

you will NEVER get the "straight scoop" from anyone in power. you'll get "what they want you to believe".

    45 confirmed cases in NYC.

This does seem to be a serious situation: and being handled remarkably well. I think it helps that we've been through this sort of thing before.

(Shameless plug) I've made a sort of table of contents in one blog, with links to relevant posts and background information: apatheticlemming.blogspot.com/2009/04/swine-flu-2009.html It includes a description of the WHO Alert Phases, and the CDC's definition of "public health emergency."

I love how they tell you there is nothing to worry about then they have the school recording calling you up saying if your kids have a fever of 100 or any flue like simptoms take them to a docter before letting them come to school. Not sure when they have done that last.

That just tells me they are worred about it more then they are saying.

Governments will NEVER tell the public all the secrets. They have to prevent panic at all costs. "National security" is a broad umbrella they can now use for just about any media releases they want to put out. The networks and news agencies will read the gov't releases verbatim if for national security.

So a few people decide "whats best for the public", and we'll find out about it half a century later.

In the 90's the army admitted to dosing San Francisco with airborne flu germs in the 50's and sent 20,000 to the hospital. A civilian population was "voluneered" for bio-warfare research without their knowledge.

THis is what so-called "democratic" and "free" governments do to their subjects, imagine what goes on worldwide! YIKES, we are like gnats, at the mercy of any wind those in power want to blow our way.

Obama calls for $1.8B to stem spread of swine flu
Mexico City economy losing $70M a day during swine flu shutdown
U.S. President Barack Obama called for $2 billion to fight the spread of the virus that causes swine flu Tuesday, as Cuba became the first country to suspend air travel to Mexico, where the virus is thought to have originated.

In a letter sent to Congress, Obama said an additional $1.8 billion will help fund a plan to build drug stockpiles and monitor future cases of the disease, which has been linked to dozens of deaths in Mexico. He said the money will also help international efforts to battle the flu.

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs, who read the letter to reporters, said the flu outbreak requires "prudent planning" and not panic.

Swine flu is now H1N1. cos its not spread from pig to human but is from human to human. so the name changed.

Swine flu approaching phase five pandemic, WHO says
Updated Wed. Apr. 29 2009 12:04 PM ET
    www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20090429/swine_cases_090429/20...

    What is a pandemic?
A pandemic is an epidemic of infectious disease that has spread across a large region, such as across continents or worldwide.

But a pandemic can be mild or severe, depending on how many deaths the disease causes. When most of us think of flu pandemics, we think of the 1918 Spanish Flu. But remember that the 1968 Hong Kong flu epidemic killed only about 700,000 worldwide. That's less than many yearly outbreaks of garden-variety seasonal flu.

If the current human swine flu outbreak is declared a pandemic, it is more likely to be of the 1968 variety because we have been exposed to several parts of this virus before. We also have good public health systems that are ready for a pandemic with antiviral medications and infection control measures.

How can I protect myself from this virus?
Since influenza spreads through spit and spray as well as contact with contaminated surfaces, the usual good personal hygiene habits are the best defence.

    * Wash your hands repeatedly through the day with soap and water or with alcohol-based hand sanitizers
    * Avoid touching you mouth, nose or eyes with your hands unless they've been washed
    * When coughing, cough into a tissue and throw it in the garbage
    * If you cough into your hand, wash your hands immediately
    * Sanitize surfaces that may have come into contact with the virus
    * If you become ill with flu-like symptoms, stay home

With human flu, the virus is most contagious between the second and third days after infection -- sometimes before symptoms appear -- and the virus remains contagious for about a week in adults and up to 10 days in kids.

This flu is the predictable result of CAFO (contained high density animal feeding operations AKA factory farming). Does Smithfields ring a bell?

A Food System that Kills - Swine Flu is the Meat Industry's Latest Plague
Mexico is in the midst of a hellish repeat of Asia's bird flu experience, though on a more deadly scale. Once again, the official response from public authorities has come too late and bungled in cover-ups. And once again, the global meat industry is at the centre of the story, ramping up denials as the weight of evidence about its role grows.

Just five years after the start of the H5N1 bird flu crisis, and after as many years of a global strategy against influenza pandemics coordinated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the world is now reeling from a swine flu disaster. The global strategy has failed and needs to be replaced with a public health system that the public can trust.

While it has not been widely reported, the region around the community of La Gloria is not only home to large pig farms but is also home to many large poultry farms.

Beware the boomerang effect. This is only the first wave. This flu will come back in the fall much stronger. Masks, they say, don't really help.

GGrrrrhhh! Hopefully it will stop spreading.

It's quite impressive how the poor choice of naming for the virus as "swine flu" is having such world wide impacts. Numerous nations are seizing the moment to fulfill elements of their own agendas.

With Dubai clearing out all pork and Egypt killing all 300000 pigs in the country, I think we have some religious zealots taking the teachings of their religion to an extreme. The victims in this case (besides the pigs) are the minorities in these countries who can eat pork so its an easy decision to attack those who may be considered unwanted without facing repercussions.

At the same time all the pork bans allow countries to invoke some protectionist measures in this poor financial lcimate that would otherwise cause them trouble. I wrote an article on this in my blog.

I'm not especially worried, though at the library we are stocking extra hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes for keyboards, mice, etc. The children's librarian also decided to remove all of the toys including the puzzles, building blocks and dinosaurs since those things do pass through so many little hands and sometimes unfortunately mouths as well.

I'm in northern Illinois. However, we got a call this afternoon that the schools in our district will be closed next week because of a "possible case" of flu.
