General discussion, that's cool, but is there a way to add categories?

Tags are the user's way of categorizing a post. Were going to come up with some basic, broad categories for you to choose from. if you have any suggestions for categories, let us know.

You can use the tags, eventually people will be able to search by tags. We kind of wanted to keep it simple though and keep the main categories small so there wouldn't be a large learning curve.

ok cool, good idea, you're gonna put some sort of "tag cloud"?

I think the plan is to have a tag cloud as well as a feature that shows other posts related to your post based upon your tags and how similar they are. At least those were some of the ideas being thrown out, we will see what actually goes into production.

I'm fairly sure both will appear within a week

      A week... pshd... slacker.

cool, having both would be nice, thought a tag cloud can take more space compared to a "related post" thing

Hey, wondering about something else (i'm wondering about a lot of things) will there be some kind of "ranking" system on the forum? on most forums there's usually titles/ranks lie "post master" or "blogging noob", will there something like that on here?

I don't think so (at least as of yet). Although we have discussed taking on moderators for certain sections to make sure that this thing doesn't get out of hand. It would be nice to see a symbol or Icon next to their names showing that they are a moderator/ master user.

Tag cloud is cool but can we recommend categories too?

Nine, it would be real nice, but it would be for specific sections of the forum? like "registration needed" sections?

That would definitely be great... people could recommend sections to a BlogCatalog operator, and if accepted, this person could become the moderator of this section...

Et Voila (a little bit of french for you and me!)
I sent a couple of suggestions to the folks at BC, they're real cool, you can contact them using the e-mail listed on the contact page.

    Special section you say?

yeah Nine said they we're maybe thinking of having moderators for certain sections (to make sure it doesn't get filled with spam and stuff)

Definitely a good move. I belong to a VA forum that has over 3,000 contributors and they have different moderators for each section. Not only that, but a selection from different timezones so that the 24 hours is covered.

Because we hand screen the blogs that are in BlogCatalog the standards for our users are higher. Most of the people here are passionate about their blogs and seem more mature in general so right now I think we are going to sit back and see what happens with these Discussions.

So far its been working great, really helpful posts and really fun posts have already begun to pop up. If someone does go overboard and spam I am sure they will be warned once but I will tell you right now that Tony is quick to remove someone who isn't 'playing by the rules' -- The cool thing is that if we remove someone it would be fairly difficult for them to create a new blog, write up a handful of posts, add the widget... get it approved. I think most people out to simply SPAM would give up fairly quickly. Thats the idea at least.
