I was a young mother. I had my daughter when I was 18 years old and my family abandoned me because I brought shame to our name. I ended up on welfare too, and depressed and alone. To make a long story short I am 40 years old with one child who is now 22. I am working on my second Master's degree, this time in education. I teach at a community day school working with children who have gotten in trouble. I am reaching out..trying to make a difference, trying to be a voice...not one of scolding...one of change, and for those that have already become young parents the voice that says...you have choices...you can do better. You can take care of you and your baby(ies)

I see similar situations at work nearly every day. A very common response is to feel pity toward the children but not toward the parents. The quandary may be how to help these families without reinforcing the patterns.

4th child at 20 does not really qualify as a teen mistake in my humble opinion. Does not mean she does not need help, I'm sure she does. But she's sure a slow learner...

In my state there are high schools that have daycares and parenting classes. These aren't mandatory.

In two years my son's new consolidated school will have an after school program that runs until 8:00 PM. There are ways to get help.

If she is living with her parents chances are all she would get is medical for herself and the child unless her family is low income as well. Once she turns 18 the medical will most likely be taken away for her not the children.

Here in my neighborhood an unwed girl is about to turn 20 and give birth to her 4th child. There is so much involved in that simple statement to lead to volitile discussions, but my emphasis today is on helping teen parents- not judging them, anyone else involved, or the multiple factors behind this complex issue.

Among other things teen parents may feel confused, uncertain, overwhelmed, angry, lonely, and depressed. None of those things make being the best parent likely. The babies suffer along with the teen parents. The risks for child abuse and neglect are high.

That said here is a link where there are tips for helping teen parents cope with what can be an overwhelming situation.
