Let's have a thread of interesting facts! Not stuff about you, I mean random interesting facts that you know... Come on, it'll be fun!

I'll start:

Leonardo da Vinci invented scuba diving breathing apparatus so that if a city was besieged by a fleet people could walk along the sea bed and drill holes in the ships. The plans were never used, though.

Brown trout are the only fish with lungs.

  Sorry aningenious, but I think you are wrong there...
  
  For one, unless you and i have completely different ideas on what a brown trout is, Then it doesn't have lungs.
  
  Second, you have the african,southafrican, and australian lung fishes. Lepidosirenida and Ceratodidae that have lungs.

  I'm afraid you're wrong, it's well known that brown trout are the only fish with lungs this is why when animal rights campaigners stopped smoking researchers using beagles they immediately switched to using brown trout.

Terry Gilliam's film 'Brazil' was nominated for an Oscar without even being released. The studio hated it so much they refused to release it, but after it was nominated they changed their minds...

The composer Schubert couldn't play any instrument or even read a note of music and composed all of his symphonies using three small hand bells and an east German tape recorder.

The guy who designed the plastic & mold to make Barbie-dolls, used to design missiles prior to working for Mattel. (He didn't design the doll as such, as the doll already existed in Germany by the name of Bild Lilli as a novelty gift for adult men, a kind of a sex toy, if you wish. The doll was found by a woman named Ruth Handler who turned it into a girls toy.)
