I think this happens with every good player, somewhere down the line in some one's career. But I am confused, can he get back ?

or is it Nadal, who has taken over the mantle from Federer of being the top player in the world ?

I think Nadal will be thoroughly tested here, you have a good player in hard court tennis in Djokovic. I think he is an underdog for this tournament.

Is Nadal the new John McEnroe ??

I think he can get back. Even though it's considered a terrible year for him, he reached the semifinal at the Australian Open (even though he was sick) and the finals at the French and Wimbledon.

Although Federer is still good enough and my favourite but I feel he is past his best....now although he might be good enough, it would be difficult for him to replace Nadal....even age is not on his side.

    @Wigwam2theorem

What I can Analyze from your view is, he still has the game and it is breaking up, and Federer needs to withstand the Nadal onslaught, I think it is more of a mental battle out there between one of the best players in the Modern Tennis Era.

I think Federer has a very good chance of beating Nadal at the US Open (or on any hard court), a good chance at Wimbledon, but I don't think he will ever beat Nadal at the French Open.

Yes, the age factor is working against him, but he is talented enough to win several more majors.

He is not as confident as he was in the past.

Nope. Even if he's number 2. he's still far from the so-called 'slump.'

To maintain the number one ranking for so many years and then just drop one place to number 2 is not so much of a big deal. We'll probably start worrying if Federer's ranking goes down to 50 or 100

His days aren't over, however Federer could really use a break from the game. I suspect 2010 will be a quieter year from a scheduling perspective as he will have to be a Dad off the court.

I have several old posts speaking to Federer's issues out there, including some specific technical issues that are haunting him.

PS - Federer in a #2 spot is quite important in this immediate future as opposed to #1. He will very soon be facing Andy Murray in Semi's (once Murray overtakes Novak's spot). Lower ranking means different draw positioning, which can be critical given the uniqueness of head-to-head match-ups.

Well, this thread was created on 8/25/08.
alchemistreader posted his comment on 3/01/09 and for some obscure reason markoskar decided to dig this from the grave so I guess that people really don't look at the date of the threads they're posting.
Note that alchemistreader also dug this out of the grave since the person right before him posted on 8/25/08

The post discussion may be more relevant now than ever Shadowmoon.
      Is there harm done here?

No. I just wonder why people don't care about the thread date, the last post date and all that.
Instead of bumping such an old thread I would rather start a new one though that's just my opinion.

Regarding the topic...it's been quite a while since Federer's game lowered the level.
I feel that he loses the will to play during some matches, specially the ones he starts loosing. It's just like a self-feeding cycle.
I think I started noticing this when he played against Nadal (when Nadal was still the 2nd in the world ranking).

Is Roger Federer greatest of all time players ? Pete Sampras has said that, he is infact in his book. It was anyone's final today at Wimbledon. And Andy Roddick missed out on some good points. I think he did everything right but lost somewhere earlier during the second and third sets of the match. Turned out to be a very good contest on the grass.
