I am just wondering. Has anyone actually ever seen their site/blog on the Home page of BC where they highlight the The Blog Spotlight? I know I have never actually seen my site/blog.
Has anyone ever seen theirs?

A big no! Then again, I rarely if ever check the BlogCatalog homepage.-
I usually log in on that page - never saw a thing.. Most of the one I see are from users who are never even around...

When I first joined I noticed it there, my 'neighbourhood' was one of the top neighbourhoods too ... no idea why. I asked, but no one could answer, lol.
I pretty much never look at the homepage now.-
That was back when they had top blogs listed?
I wonder what gets sites up there...

nah, but it's no biggie. I'm a small fish and know my place. Plus there are loads of folks who put way more time and effort into blogging than I do who no doubt are more deserving of the spotlight.-

That may be something we can agree on - but the highlighted blogs never seem to be of the popular or even lesser popular peeps. They seem to be of the I never heard of the I never heard of them...

No, I have yet to see my blog highlighted. I think the sheer volume of sites on Blogcatalog has a lot to do with that, so I'm not overly concerned.-

Your blog is on Blog Spotlight right now Ben. It's in the second position in from the left. And "no" I've never seen my blog there. I'd have to scroll down below the fold underneath all the Blog Category tags to see it and I don't usually bother doing that.

right now the front startsd with someone who has not been on in 16 days...
the next has not been seen in 27 days, followed by 11 days, 8hrs and 6 months.... and Tony is the 8hr one....

It changes so quickly, its really not a big deal I think.

The spotlight changes about every 5 minutes, the odds of seeing your own are pretty low unless you refresh the homepage every 5 minutes for an entire day.-

Guess what? I should take up gambling because the odds must be in my favor! I just came on line to BC and there I was in all my glory in the SPOTLIGHT! I had to laugh out loud. My 5 minutes have probably passed but it was truly a one of the finer moments of my life! LOLOLOL

Maybe the order of appearance has something to do with BC Blog rank. Or maybe not.
For example: I was looking for blogs related to my blogging tips and blogging tools blog in the BC Directory. I typed in the search term "blogging tools" and got theoffenderblogger back as the number 1 search result. When I typed in "blogging tips" I got back theoffenderblogger as the number 3 search result and I also got back totallysaneblogging- the deadrooster. I left thegoodknife a shout and he replied saying:
"your blogrank plays an important role in determining what order or put the search results in. because both of those blogs have the word blogging in the title or description and have a high rank, they get a bump in the results."
Maybe the same holds true or something similar is used to determine when a blog gets displayed under the featured blog?
btw my blog is onecoolsite:wordpress blogging tips and doesn't have a high rank.-
Ahhh - so If we all added "blogging" or "blog" to out titles we would rank better - laughs...

*blogging (blog, blogger) in the title fields or description fields plus high rank = directory coverage under unrelated blog listing types as well as your registered blog listing types (advertising) = increased traffic*

rank has nothing to do with the blog spotlight, the selection of blogs is completely random.

but...can we influence that randomness? In other words, if I were to stare at your servers and concentrate really hard thinking about my own blog, could I increase my chances of it "radonmly" occurring?

No offense, but why does it matter? My traffic from BC didn't go down when they took the popular blogs off of the front page. It didn't seem to fluctuated when I was on the front page in the spotlight for those brief moments in time, either.
I guess I am just happy to be part of the BC community and the traffic I get here is appreciated, regardless of how it comes in.

It matters, simply because I want to know how it works. It is just the way I am - if there is a sytem in place - I like to understand it, or at least be told how it operates.
No offense - but My traffic from BC has all but disappeared since the front has changed, and I am sure I can point out a bunch of other bloggers who feel the same. But, again - it was not the reason I did this. It was a simple experiment...
And you are correct. Your numbers have not changed...-

Benny, like you, I am a tinkerer and experiment a lot. I do a lot of clicking. I'm so bad that I've even developed a spreadsheet and populated it with BC data that I have collected. Despite my increasing number of comments and traffic, I'm hemmorraging blog rank at an alarming rate and have never been featured. Lesson: Enjoy it for what it is, forget the stats and have fun....Just my 2cents- Nards

I know Nards... And I enjoy BC - It has tought me much and I have made some good friendships as well as business leads and some great laughs. The inital idea behind this post was the fact that I almost never recognize a "highlighted" blog and it lead to some other very interesting factoids...
No biggie - as BC has become a place to hang out and BS with other bloggers, just has to be understood that it is no longer the traffic builder it once was. -

Well, if I remember correctly one of the admins said they were adding a separate page for popular blogs that will link to the home page? If and when they do, I bet yours will be on it again, Benny.
In the meantime, do lots of shameless promoting and stuff, so the newbies can find you. Most, if not all, of us here can benefit from your blog. -
It might be and it might not be - really not the question I initially asked here. I know that many people have suffered from a lack of traffic - but that is really not BC's responsibility is it? BTW: If the Highlights are random - That Clive guy is the luckiest guy I have ever met - No matter when I go there- - he is on the front...

Based on your comment - you gave me another idea... so I checked on some of the avatars that I have never seen anywhere. Basically they log on - add a bunch of friends - join some neighborhoods and then log back out.
Some come on - I guess to update the amount of posts they have made on their various webs and blogs and then log back out again...

I did a "lurkers" thread many months ago specifically aimed at those avatars I did not know. A bunch of people came out and were regulars for a while after that.

I've seen mine once, when I was new here like last April 2008 (that was way before the reformat) I was so happy I even made a post about it and took a screenshot.
I don't know how I got there but I was there so I was grateful -

I've seen some where a blogger, who rarely post to his/her multiple blogs or to the forum, and doesn't join neigborhoods or add new friends but, still manages to maintain a high page rank. It could give one pause to wonder if there may be some good old time "magic" at work ... lol -
There must be some magic in that old black hat they found...

DocNicole is running a fast second and for beginner bloggers they are really hot stuff. Both had blogs that shot right to the top and ranked among the Popular Blogs before the front page changes were made. IMO more changes than those were also made at the same time and we are beginning to witness the results of those "adjustments" now.

To me, their sites are appeasing to the eye, really easy to read. Plus they have sensational content.
Now I am not saying that there are better sites out there, or better niches, but the traffic they get, I just wonder why they are not consistently at the top?-
Hey, they are both my friends and I'm in fact one of their biggest fans. Both blog are on my blogroll and I'm a regular reader. They have great site content and Chris did a great job on both of their sites as well as on GLC. They get lots of traffic. Why they are not at the top is a conundrum.

Have you actually looked for your blog on the front page? I'm wondering because all I usually do is login there without scrolling down. -
They do get rotated. The benefit isn't large as there are probably 300 blogs rotating in that spot. I think the best reason to sign up as a premium member is that you don't see ads. Other than that, you get a cool looking badge on your personal profile. -

I have to say - I checked again (never looked before) and at 1020 hrs Monrovia time - I saw my blog as a featured blog! Iwas amazed I even saw it as Tony says 300 blogs are rotating.

I believe it is akin to the old cheat code for Contra on the Nintendo. After you log in and go to you page you take your joystick and enter in the following: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A and start...
After that. You need to visit my page on here and friend me - join my neighborhood, rate me a 5 and then go to my blog and stumble and digg every post. Upon returning the odds have increased that you will see your sight on the highlight, based off of the last time you looked! -

Good question. Never looked. I will look in the future... however the fact that so many here are saying they never look there, then what good is it anyways? It's like the blogger "blogs of note" thing. It's probably useless. -
Yes, I saw mine a couple of days ago. Didn't seem to affect traffic though.
