When you want to be informed on what the news of the day is, would you rather watch Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert or watch the nightly news with Brian Williams, Katie Couric, Charles Gibson, etc... Are we better informed when there are jokes involved or just facts?

Sometimes to maintain sanity, humor must be substituted for sensation. They try to manipulate the viewers feelings with scary music behind murder story advertisements, and it just isn't healthy to be that wound up at night.

Pragmatism. That's all I have to offer.

The shows that incorporate humor into their news, like The Daily Show, definitely help draw in more popularity. The only problem is they only have like three minutes of real facts, which can sometimes not give the viewer the whole story. But I also really don't think nightly news shows are doing any better of a job because they just talk about all the terrible things happening, and making situations as much more frightening than they really are.

if I watch anything newsy it's the Daily Show but I balance it out by reading the news, from many sources, online in the morning.

The Daily Show is purely a comedy show. It worries me that some people think it is at all related, even remotely, to actual news programming -- it is no more "news" than South Park is reality.

      More newsy than fox news

Fox News is a channel, not a show. Pick any show on Fox News, and it is more likely to give you straightfoward news than the Daily Show. The Daily Show is a comedy show, not a news program.

I prefer the Daily Show because I usually watch tv at the end of the day and at the end of the day I like to unwind and laugh a little. Daily life is real enough, I like to end my day with a smile.

and I'm not so sure I consider Fox News to be a "real" news station

I always find it interesting how so many people seem to reflexively take shots at Fox News, sometimes just completely out of the blue. I mean, FN was not even mentioned in the OP. The knee jerk reaction is funny.

some people still don't know what a joke is.

Floormodel, South Park is a documentary on the life of grade school children in a small Colorado town. But like all documentaries, it is not real.

      ;-)

Which one would I rather watch and which would keep me better informed? There's only one way to answer that: FOX News sucks ball sack!

i must agree that fox news is terrible. their slogan of "fair and balanced" is ludicrous. They always say "some people say.." which pretty much translates into their own opinions, not the news. And any station that employs Bill O' Reilly needs to re-evaluate their motives.

But back to the Daily show vs. network news, i must say, sometimes, especially when Jon Stewart is interviewing government officials, etc. he really brings up good informative points that make his audience think and maybe do some investigating of their own

The Daily Show might be just comedy, but he speaks truth to power and does a better job interviewing than many news shows. I also love the way he takes the media to task for their news coverage. And he's just plain funny.

Here's an interesting article on why conservatives like to go on this liberal comedian's show: nymag.com/daily/intel/2009/08/why_conservative_pundits_love.html

In case someone doesn't know, you can see him on Hulu for free, at least in the US: www.hulu.com/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart

By the way, a lot of programs on Fox News are just commentary and entertainment, though a lot less funny and truthful. Fox "News" is only news part of the time, and only then with a definite viewpoint.
