Last month I had my car's timing belt changed as per manufacturers recommendation. It appearently was a complicated procedure that cost over $400. This greatly complicated my monthly budget, but I figured that it was better that the dreaded possible alternative; getting stranded in the middle of Kittitas Co.

I even said those exact words to the service rep.

"Go ahead and change it. I don't want to get stuck in the middle of Kittitas County somewhere."

Despite my precaution, on my recent trip accross the state, my car suddenly stopped running while on the freeway. The engine quit and I was able to pull to the side of the freeway. It was pitch-dark, raining, cold, and I was stranded with my wife and three kids on the side of a wet busy freeway, between Ellensburg and Cle Elum, WA.

In case you aren't familiar with Washington State, that is in Kittitas Co.

We got towed into Ellensburg. Had to rent a Motel for the night. In the morning i went (all the mfing way accross town) to the repair shop. The technician told me

"It's your timing belt"

I said to myself "Somebody is going to DIE!!!"

to be continued...

You are in some way surprised at running across either a dishonest auto mechanic or a faulty car part? Silly, silly gnome.

That said, I'm sorry you got stranded. Murphy's Law required that it be in Kittitas County, though.

Given the information available, I'd say that either of legbamel's speculations is quite possible. The best, most pathologically honest, technician cant spot every faulty part that comes across the bench. And factories, with all the quality-control processes in the world, won't do an absolutely perfect job of making each part.

      Alas!

Glad to hear you were able to get towed, by the way.

Oh dear! That sounds horrible, I'm having problems with my car as well, it's not fun.

    You got ripped off.

    Need some bricks?

it was repaired at a GM dealership, by GM dealership hacks. So suing them may be like suing the federal government. If anyone tries to charge me even a penny more i'm going to call the loan people and tell them where they can collect THEIR car. I pay too g**d@mned much in monthly payments and insurance for this bulls***. My work schedule now coincides with hours of bus service to my end of town, so if these f***ers can't kiss my @ss and like it enough, I'm done!

I'm very interested to see what a mad gnome does in these circumstances.... Will you pee on his garden flowers? My imagination is completely locked on this one!

...after eating a very noxious burrito....

First contact the dealer and demand a loaner car, full repair to your car, and reimbursement for your expenses for the breakdown. Talk to a manager and don't take no for an answer to all the issues you want. If that doesn't work, I would tell them that you are contacting the BBB and also the Attorney General's Office. The AG's office in WA is very good about helping consumers with issues and you can call their office and file a complaint over the phone or on their website. File a complaint with both agencies. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Get the technician's contact info (the one who said it's the timing belt.) Try to get his diagnosis in writing on company letterhead. His testimony is going to be key in your dispute.
Best of luck. I can sympathize.

Next time get the damaged part back or request to see it,and always on the invoice request to get the new parts serial number. I had to learn the hard way to.
Also unless its still under warranty don't take it to the dealership. I always use the same mechanic who was highly recommeded from friends or family.usually those don't screw u who come with good ref...plus when u start sending people to them they cut u a deal!

    Poor poor travelosity!

I do most of my car repairs myself. That's the only way you will know exactly what type of care and precision goes into your automobile repairs. I never trust anyone else with my cars, not even for an oil change.

I do not take mine to a repair shop at all for any reason. Hubby and I do all the work. I have helped change out motors and oil pumps. We are working on one now that has to have a distributor, oil pump and oil pump shaft. We have to pull the engine to do all that but it is better that taking it for someone to do it. I have been stranded lots and learned quick how to fix it on the side of the road with bubble gum, duct tape and bailing wire. The southerns repair kit.

You need to change your screen-name to McGuyver.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. Getting stranded in the night with the whole family is no fun.

I know you only keep it to use once a year, but you can always break out the magic reindeer and sleigh. (Sorry, gnome. I couldn't resist.)

Update: The dealer in Ellensburg informed me today that it was not the timing belt's fault. Rather another part came loose and broke it. I was then told that i was looking at an expensive repair. I'm like "It isn't covered under my extended warrenty???"

    He's like "derrr... extended what?"

I'm like "yanno, the thing I mentioned when I brought it in, and said that Appleway told me that it was covered under the part warranty rather than the extended warranty. ...and how you guys couldn't hook me up with a free rental car because this repair wasn't being covered by my extended warranty, but by the part warranty instead... ringing any bells???"

"Derrr... i check it out in da morning, nerrrkt"

    GM sucks
    1. Deray28
That really sucks! I hope they do cover your charge gnome ;-)

Update: The warranty people are now sending an investigator to check out (presumably) the dealership's fishy story. We are home now thanx to my parents lending us a car. Yays!
    1. Deray28
That was nice of your parents! I hope your car is up and running soon
