The Ed Sullivan Show was the top American TV variety show that originally ran on CBS from 1948 - 1971. For those of you who can still remember back, when you were still in diapers.
Which of the great talents, that made history on his show, do you remember the most?

Besides of course the 2 most popular ones being:
Elvis Presley

Wow I have never watched her perform before and the only way I know of her was the movie with Bridgette Fonda and she liked Nina Simone's music. Glad you shared this with all of us!

    How about the Jackson 5 > www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHJRMsdcC40

Pretty amazing how Michael changed and sad to know he's gone

The sad thing is that I have always loved all MJ's songs in the 70s. The 80s and the rest changed that.

I rented The Wiz to watch with my kids this weekend, because it's been on my mind for weeks. I still have a 45 of Ease on Down the Road. I was with him until Bad and ever since I've not been a fan of his new music but I've always loved his older stuff. I have a couple of great American Bandstand performances from the Jackson 5 posted at www.squidoo.com/american-bandstand-videos if you want some great 70s fashion flashbacks (and mus9ic).

I don't remember seeing Elvis or the Beatles but I do remember Pop Gigio fondly!
    1. SweetViolet
Oh, Topo Gigio was one of my favourites!

I believe I saw the Beach Boys on Sullivan, and the Beatles as well. "I wanna hold your hand" hit the charts in my senior year of high school and my best friend was embarrassingly hysterical over them.

      Of course Topo Gigio...Thanks SV
I was saying Popo *smacks head*

I think the young Paul Anka was there too.

Ed was off the air by the time I was born (but not by much). I do know that a repeat broadcast was the first place I saw Mahna Mahna.

It's like Ed Sullivan would say it was a really BIG show. So many artists made their big debuts on his TV show but I think I remember most the Beatles most and the controversial lyrics of The Stones "Let's Spend the Night Together". Apparently Mick was warned not to sing the title line or the band would be censored as Ed thought the lyrics too raunchy, so during the song, Mick had to mumbled something along the lines of "Let's Spend Some Time Together." Wow haven't times changed since Ed...

yes, they have. Here is the clip from that really Big Show.

Sophie Tucker-the last of the red hot mamas. I'm sure no one remembers her today. And Pearl Bailey.

Topo Gigio, endearing favorite. Red Skelton, Victor Borge, The Smothers Brothers and a young George Carlin were my favorite guests.
