On a different thread, it crossed my mind that while we relate to each other via our usernames here, sometimes we're not quite sure what someone's user name IS-- How's it pronounced, what does it mean, and why did you choose it?

I thought it might be a helpful topic for discussion.

Me, mine's the name of my blog site-- which I chose purposefully to have a quirky contrast between the extreme cheapness and accessibility of thrift stores, and the concept of Romantic poetry or decorating, which is usually pretty highbrow and elaborate.

Admittedly, it's a bit long as user name. But you guys can call me Jenn. :-)

    Oh ... It's just me .... my name ...
  2. v1ctorya
How funny! I just did a blogpost about how I got my name well, not just, a week ago or so. You can look it up - Identity take two.

That aside, for the 1 it was the simple fact that Victorya was, I beleive, taken and a 1 looks like an I to me.

    Nice to meet you Jenn!
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Ha, nice to meet you, too. The number substitution works! It's still really easy to read.
    2. taylorblue
my name is Victoria...but I like how you spell it!
  3. VioletsVintage
    My business name.
  4. ghostytwofish
    A long story.

Twofish came about when I started blogging in 2002. I needed a last name. I am, in the words of a close friend, the 'typical Piscean', and I wanted something reflective of that.

Ghosty is a name that goes back about eight or nine years. I played (and still play) a game called Ultima Online. When you die in the game, you become a ghost. A player killed me, opened a magical gate back to town and said 'get along, little ghosty'. My friends thought that was hysterical, and the nickname stuck.
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Wow, now THAT's an elaborate username story! Never could have guessed that one-- Thanks for sharing! :-)
  5. rootzpoet
Its a description of my poetry. Down to earth, pure and practical.
  6. jerrydrussell
I figure that everyone has probably figured this out by now, but mine is my full name, First, Middle Initial and Last
  7. Witchywife
Years and years ago I was signing up for my first hotmail account and I wanted "Witchy Woman" like the song... but it was taken. So I tried Witchywife... it stuck. Now a lot of my friends even call me Witchy....
or J-La (because my last name starts with "La")....
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Yeah, I get J-Tho for the same reasons. I hope the person who DID get WitchyWoman was a HUGE Eagles fan and truly appreciates it.

If you Google the name stoneman, you'll find a lot of them out there. I figure I'll use my last name whenever I can get away with it as a way of claiming the name for myself in whatever space I am. Of course, other stonemans have beat me to the punch in places, so there I am mstoneman or mrstoneman, adding my first or first and second initials. The strategy might not amount to anything, but I just noticed if I type in only my last name in Google, my BC profile page comes up at the top of the fifth page. If I google Mark Stoneman, then I end up at the head of the list on the first page. Why would i care? I've had colleagues and old friends locate me this way.
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
So, you can be simply "Stoneman," sort of like "Madonna" or "Cher" or... um... some guy who just goes by his last name... :-) (none come to mine at the moment, but I'll keep thinking...)
    2. dharmagypsy7
Freud? No one ever says Sigmund Freud.. just Freud.

      How about Einstein...
    4. clioandme
I was in the army. That was the name on my uniform. And sometimes people used my last name at Dartmouth. Also, my students call me by my last name, with a title before it of course.

  13. benhurjun
Interesting discussion. Ok, here's mine. Alberto, my Dad wants to name me Benhur after his bestfriend but Mother will not agree. So I became Alberto Jr. Anyways, Dad passed away before I learned blogging and when I do, I chose the name benhurjun not just as username but also as email addresses to honor my old man's wishes. Cheers Dad!
    1. clioandme
      Interesting story.
    2. Norski
benhurjun: It's good to read of a son honoring his father this way.
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
Good story-- it's another one that have so much more meaning than we'd have ever guessed!
    4. Epiphany
Ahhh.... I like that story. ;-)
  14. RTCunningham
Mine is actually my name all scrunched together.
  15. taylorblue
i love the name Taylor...I was going to use it as my DJ name...but I never got a chance to make it to broadcasting college...so then when I started to write online I picked my favorite color to go after Taylor...

    So taylor blue
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
I'm glad to know this Taylor-- as I was wondering if it were the name of your cat! (Sorry, was putting the avatar and name together-- now I know better!)
    2. taylorblue
The cat's name is gilbert...i loved that pic so I put it as my avatar. Alot of people think that actually!
    3. dharmagypsy7
      Awwww... Hello Gilbert
  16. Uptowngal
    Billy Joel's Uptowngirl!
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
You deserve the moniker more than Christie Brinkley, I'd say. :-)
  17. Norski
"Norski" is more what I am, than who I am.

About half my ancestors came from Norway. They're short and black-haired, but Norwegians nonetheless.

Hence "Norski." I believe that "norske" is the correct spelling for the Norwegian term for "Norwegian," but American-English speakers tend to come closer to the right pronunciation when they see a terminal "i".

The other half of my genes came from Ireland and related lands, but that's another story altogether.
  18. kirewass
Hi Norski! "norsk"=Norwegian. "Det norske språket"=The Norwegian language. I´m not Norwegian, but my husband´s ancestors are.
My username: k=the first letter of my first name, ire=the three first letters of my second name, wass= the four first letters of my surname. That´s it.
    1. Norski
      Hi Kirewass!

Alas! My Norwegian forebears dropped their language before my mother's generation, in an effort to blend in with the local culture. I know only a few words and phrases.

Good work, producing a pronounceable name that way.
  19. Uptowngal
    @thriftshop~lol~thanks!
  20. rippinkitten
Well, I think mine is obvious but I'll explain it anyway: I ride a motorcycle and when you ride fast you're "rippin" up the roads.

And I'm a girl, and girls are sometimes called "kitten." So Rippin-Kitten seemed logical. And kinda cute for a blog name.
  21. bobobimbo
well Bobo = something the adults called me when I was acting stupid as a kid. It sounds dumb and rhymes with Dumbo anyway. And the second part's obvious.
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Well, no one can accuse you of being overly full of yourself-- talk about a modest username!
  22. sanktjohanser
It's my last name. I tend to use it cause there's not many of us around these days.
  23. tenanimalsdrool
they are anagrams of my real name, tenanimalsdrool, itsonedollarman, and lordmanilastone, cheers^^
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Cool idea-- wouldn't have thought of that.
    2. benhurjun
I can see, you are a big fan of "The Da Vinci Code". Yeah, I like it too. The book, not the movie. Cheers!
  24. bidarlah
i did a post on this way back in january (after browsing through my blog's archives)

    www.bidarlah.com/2007/01/bidarlah.html

basically 'bida' is a common malay word used to describe unpleasant sight or stuff, like ewww... in english, and our group have been using the word 'bidarlah' quite often as a phrase for almost anything like wateva.

and coincidentally, 'bida'lasana is also a yoga pose haha! fyi.
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
I'll have to try the phrase out sometime here in the US in it's "whatever!" use and see if I can confuse some people. :-)
  25. coffeeliqueur
I chose my username because that's what people remember when they know my name.
  26. morinn
    no great story behind mine

my real name is morina but every one calls me morine. and i chose the double "n" in honour of robb flynn

Life is beautiful, nice choice. ;-)
  28. sindoo20
Actual spelling is Sindhu (changed for username) meaning River

sindhu - indus - India (name of my country originated from this river's name)

and I am fascinated to write more about my country ...

    www.flowergirlindia.blogspot.com

    cheers!
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
That's really pretty. I've liked that almost anyone I've met from India always instantly knows the meaning behind their name. I'd worked with a lot of software developers, mostly from South India, and it was a topic of discussion that came up fairly often.

I don't think that's quite as common in the U.S.
  29. sindoo20
Most Hindu (pardon the usage) names are derived from things, place, people, abstract nouns around them. Names of people are also derived from mythologies.

    Some of names of interest:
    Thangam: Gold; Vairam: Diamond
Palani: Sacred Place in Tamil Nadu
    Raja: Meaning King (Person)
    Prakash: light
    Gyanam: Knowledge
    Pavithra: Pure

In Kerala, there is a practice among Christians(mostly converted)(pardon the usage)in most cases. They wanted to name their children which will not have any Hindu meaning. So they derived new names. Combining father's first letter and Mother's first letter eg: (Binu - father' name); sherin (mother's name) - Daughter's name would be "Shebi" or "Sebi" whichever sounds better to the region!
  30. mrsnesbitt

I'd wondered about that, too. :-)
    2. wandadog13
you should have used 'theforceluke' lol.
  32. wandadog13
Wandadog13 - whats that all about???

My partners dog is called Wanda (as in a fish called wanda - very funny film)(mad dog) and 13 because of Purple13 - my partners favourite number and her favourite colour combined to be her studio name when she was just an artist.

Now of course she's Fabulous Photo Gifts.

When I started blogging, I was unsure of the repercussions on her business so i stuck with wandadog13 and have done ever since.

    Great discussion Thrifty (and nifty?)
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
One thing I've learned from this discussion is that I clearly need to SLOW DOWN when reading people's usernames. I have been reading yours as "Wanna Dog" instead of "Wanda Dog". And to think a lot of my Real Non-Blogging Job involves editing! I'm ashamed. :-)

PS- "A Fish Called Wanda" IS a greatly funny film. Fierce Creatures is quite good, too!
    2. wandadog13
I think Racoons have got to be the funniest critters in films - live or cartoon, they're just so comical, my son and I laugh like drains! Yes we enjoyed Fierce Creatures to. (Have you seen CLockwise? John Cleese is superb!)
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
Yes, actually, I have seen "Clockwise"-- one of those great Cleese almost-Fawlty-Towers moments where things go wrong with a few lies and miscommunications, and then spiral rapidly out of control from there.

  37. Witchywife
Has anyone ever heard the old game that to find out your potential "porno screen name" you take your middle name plus the name of the street you lived on as a child. I would be Ann Plante (not that titillating) :-)
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
I'd heard a variation on that one, which was the name of your first pet, and your street name.

My lord, I'd've been named after a goldfish! :-)
  38. xerendipity
I got it from the word SERENDIPITY! Replaced the letter "S" with "X" which is my first name. Just love the meaning of it. Discovering good things accidentally.

  42. vixious
Well, about 15 yrs ago when the Internet was not such a popular place, I chose the username vixious. It's a cross between vixen and vicious, which is pretty much what I was 15 years ago.(someone actually defined this in a web-based dictionary recently-thought that was funny) I keep it around now simply because there are people who have known me by that name for 15 yrs now and as a reminder that I'm not who I was.
  43. VampireFaust
My last name is Faust and I write about vampires...

  51. FreeWine
I picked this username several years ago when I started a website to promote a new winery my parent's had just opened. At the time, my wife and I went out often to pour Free Wine for potential customers. Now, I have so many accounts that use it for... that it would be too confusing to change.

Easy enough to figure out, I'm sure. We homeschooled and we had lots of animals. The name stuck even though my kids are all grown now.
  54. Epiphany
As I continue to grow as a person and live an authentic life, *Epiphany* is perfect since it means "a sudden, intuitive insight into reality or essential meaning of something". [And it embodies Christianity since it also stands for the Christian festival on Jan 6th.]

  58. Fartmachine
Mine is pretty obvious, do I have to explain how it's pronounced? Didn't think so bwahaha.
  59. Dariana
My username is my REAL name. Its funny, when I came on the internet in 1992 no one had ever heard of it and the reason was it is a blend of both my Grandmothers names. Then 4 years after I began surfing the net, my name "Dariana" was the number 1 name given to new baby girls. That just cracked me up because my Father made my name up when I was born. Guess my Dad started a trend way back then and never knew it would take off 40 years later, lol.
  60. rashers
If you ever read a book called "Strumpet City" you'd come across a character called Rashers. The book is about Dublin in the bad old days and Rashers brings a spark of humour into the story... but also some sadness. Just like my blog.
