Talking about neck ties, the other day I heard a fellow on TV say, “I don’t know why we wear these things.”

That led me to wonder what is the origin of a lot of the common things we wear or do.

If you can think of something please list its origin.

I will start off with two:
I read that years ago when the neighbors didn’t like someone they would just burn his house down to get rid of him-- That is the origin of the word firing someone.

I read that years ago before good soap and good deodorant and people didn’t bathe and change clothe daily there was a big problem with body odor-- that was the origin of using a neck tie tied tightly around the neck to keep the bad odor out of ones face.
