      The last I read, that's happened at fairly regular intervals. If something like the impact, about 65 million years back, happened today, it would be more than just bad for the stock market.
      
      I'm not sure that it would spell extinction for humanity, though. To paraphrase a parody I read, decades back, 'we're as easy to deal with as a cornered rat, and as hard to kill as a cockroach.'
      
      (There's a pretty good look at what may have killed off the dinosaurs at www.cotf.edu/ete/modules/msese/dinosaur.html . They didn't address one of my favorite speculations, though: that space aliens hunted them to extinction, or that the 'meteor impact' was weapons fire in an interstellar war. Unrealistic? You bet! But fun to imagine.)

   My prediction - the earth ends when the sun burns out and the solar system dies. We've got several billion years. As Chelle says, how long humans last is another story. Currently I'm forecasting a 2067 invasion by space-apes.

      then they're gonna crack the earth in half to get to the chewy center.
      
      how many licks does it take to get to the center of an earth pop? *we* may never know, but the gladiator lizzard men will!

   What to do ... what to do. Since you have explained it, I will consider what to pack for our possible survival and try to best determine where we will migrate. I certainly will miss being able to converse with my world friends. There certainly won't be any mass communications after the upcoming event. So, let's party! I'm going to take a nap first.
