The Twist song was made popular by Chubby Checker. He recorded another twist song equally popular in the 60s, entitled "Let's Twist Again".

Twist is a freestyle dancing inspired by the rock and roll music.

The twist dance was a worldwide craze among young people.

The Twist song was also recorded by Hank Ballard.

On the surface, yes it's seems surprising. But it's really about commercialability (if that's even a word?) Elvis and the Beatles had huge followings yes. But they were controversial.

Yup. Chubby Checker was about good, clean, dancin' fun. Here's Elvis doin' the Twist: www.youtube.com/watch?v=edTXtxqSG7k&feature=related and here's Chubby himself: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRDGBpEqLfs&feature=related .

Interesting. I wonder if they use the songs inclusion in other albums as part of the tabulation? Not only was it huge on its own, it is in thousands of mix, "best of" and decade type stuff. You know the "Time Life Presents..." :-)

I amwith fershur, remember back then, songs came out on 45's, which were more affordable to teens back then.

Makes sense to me. The twist was a damn easy dance to do and the song was fun.

According to my mom, my dad chastised her because she was doing the twist with my older brother. Apparently in 1960 it was considered indecent by some. Man did my dad loosen up later, thank Goodness.

I don't pay attention to any of these media generated lists, awards, etc., etc. They're usually generated by those in control of their respective industries (in one way or another,) & as such, they're certainly not impartial or representative in any honest way (except, perhaps, as a further marketing ploy.)
For example; Jethro Tull beat out Metallica for "best heavy metal band" a few years back. Need I say more?
